I think Mully's thought process is certainly rooted in logic, but when you really breakdown what sitting out the pre-season means? It becomes fallacious.

Mully is bringing up the negatives to be taken away from last year's offensive performance. Particularly, the lackluster final half of the season. These negatives are VERY real and being skeptical of the Bears because of them is 100% in-bounds.

That being said, where Mully's logic falls apart, is his implication that live reps in pre-season games is the only method of fixing the unit's flaws during camp.

Let's say that the Bears went about the old-school, classic approach to pre-season. First game = 1-2 series for starters. Second game = Roughly a quarter or quarter-plus for starters. Third game = Dress rehearsal... 3 quarters for starters.

All in all, this adds up to about a single full game's worth of reps. So, Trubisky gets 35-ish drop backs and live reps passing the ball? Running a dummy/vanilla version of the offense?

Okay... well...

Throughout training camp. Between joint practices (which, like pre-season games, also features an opposing team to get reps against) and team practices. Trubisky and the offense will get well over a THOUSAND live reps together. Not to mention, in practice... they don't have to run the dummy version. They can pull out everything and get REAL work in.

The only reason Mully and some fans think you need pre-season game reps. Is because it's the only thing we can see on TV as fans. So, it creates this illogical thought process leading us to believe "I see no reps... therefore they're not working on getting better". When in reality, nothing more is there to be accomplished in pre-season games that they're not already getting. 30-40 passing reps. That is IT.

I love a good article that brings out two sides of an argument. Personally, I'd like to see Mitch in a couple of series, but never doing anything that would come close to causing a possible sack/big hit/etc. A couple hand offs, a few quick screens and slants, stuff like that. But I see the other side as well.

I think they give him enough reps in practice for timing passes and such.......
Being in a preseason game just to handoff doesnt do much I wouldnt think.....
And I think they will be diminishing preseason games soon....I dont think teams and fans like it at all.....
Its just tv revenue......And I think the only reaon people have it on is cause theres nothing better on.....just my guess tho.
I think two preseason games a year is plenty to get your team ready......
Highschool football nor college has preseason, why should the NFL.....?

Yeah, if this is indeed more of a trend as opposed to a unique situation, and there are signs it's more of the former, we could be seeing the call coming down the road for 2 preseason & 18 regular season games.

Not sure of 18 games, thats a lot of wear and tear....A team is very lucky to get thru a full season without major injuries thru 16 games and to add on to that two more games to an already beaten up players from a grueling year,I dont think it happens......But you never know.

I'm definitely not advocating for an 18 game schedule, 16 games is plenty. I'm just wondering aloud if this is a coming trend.

Meh. Why waste time, energy, and health to run a few vanilla plays? Focus on practice and preseason be damned. I love Nagys approach. I also buy into the Nagy excuse of pushing the limits with Trubisky in practice to see what he’s got. You learn from your mistakes and Nagy is trying to maximize learning in practice. I could be wrong on this point, but I genuinely think Trubisky struggles in practice are by design from the coaching staff.

I take it Nagy feels practicing against our defense is far better then any preseason game and Mitch looks real good so why take a chance. The only player we can not afford to lose is Mitch. There is a SB at stake. To me it's a very positive sign.

I would prefer Trubs plays a bit. Of course the minute I say something he jets onto the field and breaks a bone, it's all on me. I can't bare that responsibility.

But plays what? some vanilla snaps that won't even be used in the season. If we were running the real offense I would agree but why take a chance with injury for preseason puff plays. I don't see that helping him as much as practicing against our guys.

Tom Brady had 44 passes last year in preseason.

At 41 years old with nothing to prove and as an obvious injury risk based on age alone.

We're being f*cking idiots about this. Have no doubts about it.

I'm totally for it and hope more teams do it and it leads to the NFL reducing the preseason to 2 games.

Gotta say, with some key injuries that hit a number of starting players in Week 3 of the preseason, I'm now fully on board with Nagy resting the starters until it begins for real.
