I hear ya. I go to $20 shows and spend $400 on merch and beer.

Not a single item of merch. Fuck of a lot of beer though. I make my own beer at home so I'm gobsmacked paying $9 Cdn a pint.... But I do, over and over.....

Because of the travel we try to cherry pick one a year.

Recently has been a David Byrne. An Elvis Costello. Neil Young. Clapton. And last year Jack White on his own.

Each one it's at least me and my son and daughter. Ball and chain might stay home with the cats.

Same. Closest place for me to see anything at all is a two-hour drive. I'm addicted to concert posters and t-shirts.

Saw the Stones Wed. and they were great. Just got back from Kamasi Washington/Herbie Hancock tonight and that was next level.

Apparently I'm going to see Eric Church and Luke Combs in November. Not really looking forward to it. Eric Church is ok. He opened up for Hank Williams Jr before anyone knew who Eric Church was, and he put on a pretty good show back then. He ain't bad. Never heard of Luke Combs.

The things a man will do for pussy.

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout, brah.

:suds:

I'm just going to say I was very happy that I saw the stones play before HH and Washington. Don't get me wrong, the stones were great. They pulled off the mega-show like you'd hope a big band would pull off the mega-show. HH and Washington were a whole different beast. They all played as close to perfect as you could hope anybody would. Washington had a keyboardist and someone on an acoustic piano. Crazy thing is that I think they were a couple of local guys who probably hadn't worked together that much and they pulled it off flawlessly. The keyboardist (still trying to find his name) had two different synthesizers and he was playing the same thing with his left hand that he was with his right. I've never played piano but I'm assuming playing the same thing with both hands with the fingers being reversed on each instrument is pretty fucking hard. And it wasn't some basic shit and it wasn't some "look at me" sort of thing. It was that's the sound he wanted so he used two synthesizers to do it. Every guy on the stage for both acts were absolute monsters on their instruments. The one "problem" I had with the show (my problem, not theirs) is that all the pieces they played were like 15 minutes+. Listening to that for 3+ hours is mentally exhausting.

And nobody in the music industry alive has anything on Herbie Hancock. "Genius" gets thrown way too much in music. But watching him play, they invented the word for people like Hancock because there's just no way to quantify what he does in normal terms because he's so beyond everyone else today. And that's at 79 years old.

No doubt.

The man is part of the music pantheon....and not just for jazz...but music in general. He's been at it since he was just 19. 60 years and counting.

btw: Kamasi W. is gonna be turning lots more heads in the coming years. Dude is on it.

I never heard him before I saw him last week but Kasami was excellent. Miles Mosley was equally impressive. I'm really hoping Mark Guiliana makes his rounds up here because I'm a huge fan of his.
