I like this McCown signing. Dude may be old, but he still has a really good arm and still has wheels. He has also always been willing to teach and help the starter. He has a rep as a very intelligent QB and can be like another coach on the sidelines for Wentz. Check out the highlight vid during his time with the Jets ... some very impressive throws in there. I am much more comfortable with McCown going in there than Kessler if Wentz gets banged up early in the season.

I hope that you're right.

Rey, as usual, you are very perceptive. McCown definitely was the Birds best option. He is also a very good locker room guy, who is like a coach on the field, ala Doug Pederson was. He could also wind up as a good QB or even Head coach someday. Very good move.

We'll see on Thursday.
If he wanted to be a coach, he wouldn't have become an announcer and he became an announcer because nobody wanted him.
They took Kessler ahead of him.
So, as I said, we'll see.

You have to put things in perspective ... if Wentz goes down early in the season we are screwed no matter who comes in. What we saw with Foles was the exception to rule ... that's why I am completely fine with not taking a chance with Wentz in these preseason games. So what we are looking for at backup is a guy who can come in for a game or two and game manage until Sudfeld comes back in Week 5 or 6. The Eagles didn't go after McCown to begin with because they were fine with Sudfeld as the primary backup ... Kessler came into the picture later as a cheap camp arm, but that's all he was. McCown is a better option than Kessler in every way for the first 4-5 games of the season. Better size, better arm, better mobility and a ton more of experience. Thorson did better in this past game, but he is still nowhere near being able to contribute this season ... so bringing in McCown was imo a very good move.

I guess my main question is - Can McCown still play?
We'll see on Thursday.

Just 2 seasons ago he threw 18 TD's in just 13 games for the Jets. Last season the Jets OL was a disaster and they wanted to get Darnold in there ... so McCown was shifted to backup. The Eagles OL and weapons are world better than the Jets ... so if McCown is forced into action I think he will do just fine. That's not to say I think we would be fine if he has to start 8-10 games ... but that's not what he was brought here to do.

If he was still good, SOMEBODY would have picked him up.
I HOPE that he is still somewhat good.

He is a good "game manager" QB, and he'll be just fine! Like Rey said before, barring an injury to Carson, Josh won't even see the field in the regular season. And then, the backup job will be between Suds and Josh. As long as Suds performs well as a backup during garbage time, he will stay at #2 QB.

I just need to see him do well on Thursday. If he does well, then I'll feel better. I wish that he would play with the 1's.

He had offers ... even after announcing his retirement. He said his agent would come to him about the offers and he said he didn't want to unretire unless it was an offer from the right team. The Eagles situation was one of the few that felt right to him as they have a recent Championship and have a contending team. His last few teams were bridge situations where there wasn't any realistic Championship aspirations ... so any of those offers were probably quickly turned down by him.

That's all good but he's also 40.

If he hadn't had any success in the league in 5 years then that would be relevant, but like I said earlier, he's 2 years removed from throwing 18 TD's in just 13 games without any weapons on that Jet's team. Drew Brees is 40, Tom Brady is 42, Manning's 38 ... you can still play the position at that age, plus all we're asking of him is to be a better option than Kessler/Thorson for the first 4-5 weeks till Sudfeld is ready to go. It's not like we brought him in here to be our starter.

Eagles signed LB Chris Worley, formerly of the Bengals. It is for depth, and most likely wind up on the PS at best, but you never know.

It's different when you have a chance at a ring. He was retiring and the Eagles talked him out of it.
