I hate to say it, but I see Heath still being the starter this year. Hope I am wrong.
I think with the players we got. Until they get some game time exp. & start proving themselves. The only way someone takes the job from heath is to out hustle him. & Hustle is the one thing he does well. So I wont be surprised to see Heath begin the season as the starter. Unless we get a high priced FA for that very spot before the season begins.

I am expecting Heath to start off as the starter.
My wish is someone steps up & takes the job from him during the season.

Don't sleep on the FA Christian Covington too. He's a solid addition that will add some good beef to our DT's
I'm very interested in seeing how Covington fits in. I think he could be a real good rotation guy. It seems as if no one ever talks about him (or Hyder) but he can stop the run. I hope they go very long at DL and WR. I hope Gregory is reinstated but I wonder if it would be best if he is suspended a couple of games and allows us time to sort out that last DL cut or two. If we get great DL play in the preseason games I think we should look at trading some of these guys (and WRs and OGs too) because if we enter the season healthy, I think we will be cutting guys that can help NFL teams

From what I have seen so far Iloka is a better player. I can't say I saw him with Minn last year, but with Cincy he was a better player than Heath has been here. If he doesn't take the job from Heath, then shame on us for not signing someone better who would have. There were tons of safeties on the market.:2cents:

As far as the young DBs we have here, I like what I read about them, but don't assume any of them will win a job and agree that once we see them in games we will get a better feel for what we have.

The most disturbing part about the below is that Heath is MUCH worse in the passing game than in the run game and this is what he did in the run game last year. How is it he is even being considered for a starting job. I'll repeat again, if Iloka (or someone else) doesn't win the job then shame on us for not signing someone who would have. Maybe they are going to look at Berry or Boston if they are still out there in a month or so:

Heath was second in the league with 22 broken tackles in 2018, according to Pro Football Outsiders. And he had 19 missed tackles, including 13 in the run game - a league-high for safeties, according to Pro Football Focus.

His tackling efficiency was second-worst in the league among those who played at least 535 defensive snaps, 63rd out of 64 eligible players, per PFF.

And this doesn’t even include the missed assignment by Heath in the NFC Divisional playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

My problem with this is IF RG is reinstated and we cut a good player so RG can stay, RG then goes out and does a RG thing and is kicked out of the league again. He is fools gold to me. I would rather not be in that position.

Totally agree with most of what you are saying and I would have cut the guy a couple of years ago. BUT, I still would rather have the better player and he is still on the team. Whomever we deem to be the last DE on the roster and cut if he is reinstated isn't likely to be more than a guy who is inactive every week or a STs guy or perhaps a couple of snaps per week guy. Plus if it is one of the kids he could end up on the practice squad anyway. I am a big believer in depth, but I take the top of the rotation guy every day of the week.

I guess it depends on several factors, one when/if he gets reinstated and two, how many games he actually plays in. If he gets the go ahead half way through the year, then the "who we cut" is an easier choice as we have seen what all these can't miss prospects can and can not do.

A top rotation guy does no good if he only allowed in the stadium if he buys a ticket.

I think if reinstated it won't be for week 1

If he is buying a ticket to get in, then he isn't taking someone's roster spot

Great Sean Lee story was told today on Dallas Sports Talk.

Lee has a summer house near Oxnard. He flew one way back to Dallas so he could go to camp on the team charter with his team mates

I heard that too. The man is the epitome of a leader. He’s going to make a great coach for us some day.

I've bought 3 jersey's over the years...Renfro, Staubach & Emmitt
I just bought my 4th this afternoon.

Sunday, Lee insisted he take snaps on Special teams...said he was looking for other ways to help the team.

I love Sean Lee and everything he stands for as a football player and person.

My first Cowboys jersey was Drew Pearson. Man I thought I was something wearing that to school with my Dallas Cowboy jeans and belt buckle. JC Penney’s catalog was a great thing in 1979

Seems the most impressive rookie thus far is Mike Jackson. Looking forward to seeing these young guys in the preseason.
If the young guys turn out to be keepers, expect a couple of vets to get cut. Turning over the bottom 1/3 of the roster to get cheaper will be key in signing the studs coming up.

I think this team is doing so well now in the draft and FA, they are just loaded, all the way up and down the roster. A lot of teams will sign guys Dallas cuts this year

Agree and yet we are still, somehow, some way and for some reason I can't comprehend, looking at Jeff Heath as our starting safety

side note I'm also worried about kicker

Yep he is missing some in camp. Big ones too. I worry about all kickers though. Always have. The thing is many games come down to that guy too. It drives me crazy to watch teams get inside the 30 in OT and start running the ball to set up the field goal. I get why they do it and it is about 80 percent if not more. Those guys coming off the edge are so close.
