This is the part that worries me. They got AD, so they win the trade. But now they have to put the best possible roster around him and Lebron.

Even if they ultimately don't end up with enough to get a 3rd star, they will have enough to put good enough players around them that they can be a contender.

In fact, unless they can somehow get Kawhi, going after a 3rd star may not be the best course for them. They may be better off getting 2-3 next tier guys who can play and adding a couple of vet mins to that. It would make them a deeper team than adding a 3rd star.

As @The Q suggested, guys like Patrick Beverley and Danny Green. Then I'd say maybe someone like Lopez and/or a Morris twin.

sounds like it was pure old incompetence.

and really at this point.....if you are weighing the benefit of the doubt between incompetence and neglect.....i mean ,i think we have seen where the scale tips

In the immediate aftermath of the Los Angeles Lakers’ trade for Anthony Davis this past weekend, just about everyone assumed that the deal would be structured in such a manner that they could add a third max-salaried superstar in free agency.

Except, when it comes to these Lakers, assumptions are extremely dangerous.

According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, the Lakers did not realize an accounting error that left them without max cap space until after they agreed to their trade with the New Orleans Pelicans, and then called back in an attempt to rectify the mistake.

1.8 million for the pick? LOL, Lakers thought they could buy 4 or 5 of them for 5 million to fill their bench.

A lot of speculation by folks who weren't part of the negotiations.

We don't know if the Lakers asked about the July 30th date or not. It certainly wasn't in the best interest of the Pels to wait that long. So, they may have insisted on the July 6th date. In fact, the initial reports after the trade was announced said that the Pels wanted it to be official on July 6th.

As for AD's trade bonus, that can be waived at any time if he chooses to do so. I don't know if he'll decline it or not (that's up to him and Rich Paul) and really don't care because it would be a pretty stupid reason for the Lakers to not complete the trade.

Whether or not he waives it means the difference between $32 million in cap space (assuming they can shed more salary) and $28 million. If they can't shed enough salary, then it's the difference between $28 million and $24 million.

In any case, it's enough money to put a deep roster around Lebron and AD if the Lakers sign the right guys.

Umm, they get cheaper as they get later (and the Lakers have a few players to deal for them too - Wagner, Jones, Bomba, as well as future 2nds).

Fair points, but unless Shelbourne is lying (or misinformed, which is possible) they screwed up and knew they did.

No, I think she is speculating. She's definitely solid, but she wasn't part of the negotiation and I didn't see any quotes from anyone who was.

Certainly possible. They have an inexperienced FO. But even if they did screw up, I really doubt the Pels would have come off of the July 6th date. They had no reason to.

For all we know, getting it done July 6th may have been part of how they kept Kuzma.

doesnt seem like a thing that you would just pull out of your ass. Plus, i think she would frame it as speculation if thats what it was

she said--- the Lakers called them back after realizing their error.

She didnt say- I THINK or I HEARD the Lakers called them back after realizing their error.

Could be.....but why call them back if they knew this was the plan?

Don't know for sure that they did or if they called back with a different offer to get the date moved back.

I don't really put a lot of stock in reports from people who weren't part of negotiations and don't quote anyone who was.

As I said, I'm not saying the Lakers didn't screw up on that detail, they are an inexperienced FO after all.

But I'm also not going to assume they did just because someone wrote an article saying they did.
