did a fly fishing class this weekend through TCO Fly Shop in Boilng Springs, PA. It was pretty great, but the weather was very sucky and we got rained out on the second day...so they told us we can come back up in the spring and take the whole class over again for free...pretty sweet.

Learned a lot in the one day though. Looking forward to build on it.

How was this? I am looking to startl learning this spring. I'm going to start out with a $60 casting class and I'm trying to digest a few books on it right now. There is a sports store out here that does one or two day classes for going after specific types of fish but I'm probably not ready to put the rubber to the road on that yet.

A few of us can answer any questions you guys have.

I always start out by dispelling the notion that expert casters catch more fish. Casting is among the least important aspects of the sport behind building a proper leader, selecting the correct fly, the angler being in the correct position to cast to a particular riser or seam in the river etc.

the class was very helpful even though the second half got rained out. We are going to go up and give it another shot in the spring and get our full class in.

I wouldn't mind a full on trip somewhere though, with a guide to start off. I'd actually like to do it down in the FL Keys.

Yer all in. That's a decent investment for someone who's never set foot in the water. Few thousand more in flies and gear and you'll be set. Lulz.

Tidbit: I have probably found as many flies as I've purchased or tied. Lost a few books over the years too, but found dozens of books.

I've set foot in the water.

and the 5 wt was a Christmas gift from my dad from a few years ago. I bought the 8 wt myself. The 3 wt was my dad's old rod.

I bought a box of deceiver flies, which should be good for fishing striped bass on the Chesapeake. I need to get a sinking leader though.

Aren't 8 weights normally for salt water type fishing? I just have a 5 weight right now because in Wisconsin it seems more like a Goldilocks sized rod for what I'll potentially try to catch. I'm probably going to have my first go at it next weekend now that I sort of have the casting down.

correct

I live on the Chesapeake, which is brackish water. If I am going to fish for striped bass, an 8 wt would be the right choice.

If you live in WI you should have an 8 or 9 wt for pike and muskie, a 5 or 6 wt for trout "steelhead" and bass

On your back-cast, make a strong motion between the 10 O'clock position and 2 o'clock, then, pause before making your forward motion to let the line straighten out behind you. Without the pause it just falls in a big coil at your feet.
