Again life got in the way of watching the game in a way that the knockout rounds will not allow for. Yeah. That’s it.

Watched the highlights though. A few thoughts....

Carli Lloyd might just be our super sub when this gets to knockouts....but damnit she is still a complete monster out there. Wow.

Could have easily been 5 or 6 goals. Some amazing saves by the Chilean goalie in the second half. She was inspiring and we were giving her some tough shots.

Chile’s keeper is definitely legit! I’d take her on our team

Every team has now played 2 games. Good to see Canada at 2-0. They finish up on Thursday vs. The Netherlands. Still seems like it's the U.S. tournament to lose.

France is currently the main roadblock I think... May not see it in the Sweden game either, but our back line is not phenomenal and Naeher is a so-so keeper...

Jill Ellis has some hangups on making her lineups...

1) Lloyd should start until such time as she proves otherwise. She is NOT at the same place Wambach was last WC (Clearly slower and well past her prime).

2) With our D line, Krieger is the same as Lloyd... She is experienced and still has it. She needs to start...

3) Ertz needs to be paired up with Sauerbrun in the middle of our back line. This pairing solidifies the line and has worked well in the past. Dahlkemper has improved, but the WC is the time you put your best lineup out there.

4) If healthy, Ashlyn Harris needs to start in goal... Naeher's little brain fart in the Chile game (called back by an offside) just seems to happen too often.

Midfield and Front lines are just a logjam. . We have top quality, experienced players and some excellent young players pushing for time as well, so it is just a matter of finding the group that is "on" and rolling with them...

She plays/played for USF

She looked fantastic for sure... Also Schneider for Jamaica (I think?) looked great in her first game ... (not sure how she fared in second)... But 19 yo and playing for UNC Wilmington I think they said?

I had a thought yesterday....Lloyd is not starting as there is feeling she can’t go as long (yep, like Wambach). Whether she can or can’t is moot. My thought was how baseball teams more and more are using a opening pitcher. If you’re only going to use Lloyd for a part of the game....maybe use her for the first 20-35 mins, not the last. Could be a hell of a way to start, as yesterday showed.

I still worry greatly about the defense. The youth movement is fine, but perhaps over done. I too would have Ertz back in the box with Saurbraun....and only one of Dunn/O’Hara at the wings at a time (with Krieger on the other wing).

There is too much youth in the center of D (Goalie included) and while I think Ertz can stay disciplined to get back I worry about Horan pressing forward too much......and that’s even before considering the card problem created yesterday (she is the kind of player that could easily miss a game sometime in the knockouts).

Lloyd isn't better than Rapino in service, isn't better at breaking down 1 on 2 as Heath, and is probably equal to Alex Morgan (the face of the team). Who do you sit? As I see it, Lloyd and Morgan have the similar game, Heath and Rapino are too special at what they do.

Krieger is solid at D, but not as good in transition to Offence as the outside backs are required to do a lot. Both Dunn and Ohara are better when playing offence.

Hard to argue your 3'd point, and it would solve another issue, Mewis in, move Horan back to holding mid.

Well, and maybe this isn't fair to change formations for the purposes of our discussions, BUT...

For starters, I seem to recall Heath being more of a center mid type earlier in her career and I firmly believe she is the best all-around player on our team, so honestly I'd like her at a center mid position... I was actually more suggesting Lloyd at a center or attacking mid position rather than striker, BUT I can see her as a 2nd striker as well....

Move to a 4-4-2....
Harris in goal (Though Ellis has committed to Naeher, so..)
Back line of Krieger-Sauerbrun-Ertz-Dunn
Mid Line of Rapinoe-Heath-Horan-Pugh
Up Top got Morgan - Lloyd

For primary subs we still have Mewis, Press, Lavelle, Dahlkemper, O'hara...

Rarely use: Long, Davidson, Sonnett, Brian, McDonald...

Now, I have to admit that Pugh is probably my favorite player and I really think Ellis has messed her up in the head. She was and is at her best as an attacking winger (or in this case and outside mid, but used the same essentially) when she uses her speed and creates from the right side. Ellis experimented with her in more of a center mid (almost a holding mid at that) and it really wasn't her game...

Anyway, point is that I tend to favor Pugh, but could see another in that position, Press or Lavelle maybe? Scoot Heath outside drop Lloyd back and start Press along side Morgan?

Lots of options here. I rarely like Jill Ellis' lineups though... LOL!!

Lloyd played most of her career at the middle, at least that is what my memory tells me. Tough choices for sure. I believe the issue is, breaking down the bunker, what Sweden did to us in the Olympics. This is the primary reason 2 players are starting in my mind. 1 Rose Lavelle at mid and 2 Heath up top. It is problematic for teams when neither can be contained 1 on 1. Both on the same side, makes a bunker D a problem. Lloyd, can be that good but would lose her scoring prowess either playing mid or subbing for Tobin who is the best break down player on the team, as good as Carli is. So again, I see only Alex or Rapino as the only subs as starters go, if a team bunkers. Again, imho.

I expect to see Sweden bunker up on this one. Aside from pride there isn’t a whole lot for either side to play for.

Moot game or not I’m concerned with the bunkering. We have more weapons to try to break it, but the counter off the bunkering concerns me a lot.

Ertz would need to hang back, a challenging discipline considering they will be trying to break such a bunker. Horan would need to hang back too. And she has to play off the player a bit with the card.

And also....while I don’t think they should or ever will play down in a game...if Sweden were to get a the win anyway that’s not so bad. Instead of France first up it would be Canada-Netherlands loser most likely. Not a cake walk....but still a better quarterfinal matchup. Again...not saying they would aim for it.

And then maybe the counter doesn’t work and our D holds and gets some respect. It will be interesting to see

Norway with the PK goal in the 3rd minute thanks to South Korea being completely stupid with the bear hug on that corner kick. Clear as day!

Yea, if the US would lose, it would mean going through Germany which isn't quite the team of a decade ago. Easier path than meeting France in the Quarter finals, but I don't see Sweden winning... Tie perhaps... But who knows.

Watching Korea/Norway now. Norway's looking pretty good thus far. One of my darkhorse teams in this tournament.

Norway just got away with a little push of their own in the box.. Could have been a PK for Korea... Notice how they didn't (commentators) ask the rules commentator about it?
