AMD Ryzen 3000 Announced: Five CPUs, 12 Cores for $499, Up to 4.6 GHz, PCIe 4.0, Coming 7/7

Quite a few things I like:

1) Socket life and backwards compatibility with AM4
2) AMD's Soldered IHS - I never forgave Intel for cheaping-out with paste under the lid - post Sandy Bridge.
3) Intel's IPC & Process lead seems to have evaporated (although real benches will come later with the release 07/07/19)
**It also helped that Intel gagged on its 10nm node
4) PCIe 4.0 - not a big deal for video cards (as they've yet to saturate PCIe 3.0)... but will pay big dividends for the next gen SSDs.
5) No gimping processors with non-SMT SKUs.
6) Price point vs Intel - very favorable

Good time to be a consumer again, competition is a good thing.

I have a feeling AMD is sandbagging a bit and we could see a 16/32 AM4 beastie (depending on Intel's response) on the refresh cycle, I'm guessing 6-7 months. It does exist ----> as an engineering sample

Who's in on the next release, and which one?

That's just it though, Intel doesn't have a response. Even their roadmap leaves you scratching your head at best. AMD is smoking them right now it just about every segment. Dominating the data center. More than caught up to nVidia (They too are stagnating as much as Intel is). Leading in 7nm. Their latest mobile processor is suddenly a serious threat to Intel.

Lisa Su has that company seriously going like gangbusters. And no, I'm not a fanboi. I haven't owned an AMD based system in quite a long time. I'm looking to make a new build later this summer and am leaning heavily toward AMD.

Not just because of their latest launch specs, but more impressively look at the names that are rolling out supporting boards and related support. Industry is swarming to them right now as well.

I mocked AMD @ 1.83/.... was hoping they fold 3yrs ago or get bought... the only thing that kept them alive was XBox and Playstation now i wish i bought it. $29 highest its ever been is like 40 something... back in like 2005 or something. Ive always hated AMD... But intel seems to be the hare... and the tortise is gonna win this round.

Intel is releasing the 9900ks though 5.0 across all 8 cores... only a month after i bought the 9900k. grrr.

The Demo they put on of the Navi gpu riding pcie4 was kicking the RTX 2080ti ass on pcie3. same with CPU's their claims are large...

Intel still has the clocks and the ipc til 3rd parties get the chips... they will be out july 7th

I saw that throughput benchmark with NAVI, looked like a pretty useless bench.... video cards haven't even saturated PCIe3.0's bandwidth yet. I have little doubt that your 2080ti will still rule the roost. Besides PCIe5.0 is right around the corner, the specification just came out , PCIe4.0 is just a stopgap.

it appear Intel is making strides in Graphics... Tom Peterson acquisition is likely to pay off soon

pcie3 hasnt been eclipsed, and I think they made their own demo for Navi vs RTX...

If this doesn't light a fire under Intel Wiz, I don't know what will. Perhaps they're not tipping their hand with their latest whack roadmap. Keep in mind AMD holding back on their roadmaps too, they left Threadripper off their latest map. There are some roadmap shens going on between these two. Lisa Suh has done a great job, but a large part of the success of this release will be due to TSMC's 7nm node. Intel's 10nm actually has greater transistor density, so naming conventions and mularkey aside: When Intel gets their 10nm head out of their ass maybe there will be some serious back and fourth (which will be good for all of us)

Intel did just release 10nm low-power Ice Lake... which seems to indicate they're still having yield issues with higher TDP 10nm silicone. Guess we'll find out.

The vendors that make motherboards and other supporting equipment depend on spending their biggest budget on the best bet to return on investment. To me, the bigger eye opening isn't the lack of a roadmap nor their struggles with reaching similar milestones on architecture, it is the new board lines being announced that look like vendors are rallying to AMD more than I recall in over a decade. The new ASUS ROG line for AMD is but one small example. And sure that's not in the biggest money making sector, but AMD has been pushing the data center and looks to be threatening the mobile market as well. Coming from all angles.

AMD won't 'kill' Intel as in dead dead, but if they let them take a foothold and the advantage through this year, it could set them back several years and create a heck of an uphill climb to take command again.

Did you see Coreteks take on it last week? A few others I semi-follow and respect are all coming from the same direction.
Oh, and in case anyone actually wants to watch any of his vids, I advise going at least 1.5x on the speed. He sounds like he's in slow motion.

I mean it's good for the consumers either way. Need both of them going hard at it to keep those R&D dollars flowing.

Just when I though AMD was all but dead a few years ago. Now they are back. I was a big fan way back in the day but they fizzled out or so it seemed. Glad they are back. Maybe I will finally go back. Might be a little while before I need something new though.

I did like his attempt at quantifying how much node shrinkage vs. architecture improvements affect performance. Pretty much spot on, and the real reason Intel is behind on the desktop front now. After enjoying a full node lead (or better) over they past few decades, they're a half node behind AMD now thanks to their 10nm fiasco. IPC is nearing a point of limited returns and Moore's law is hitting the wall as they approach limits to silicon lithography. Now Intel's fabs are a liability, where once they were a strength.

AMD looking to capture more the mainstream PC space by offering HEDT capability to it's AM4 socket.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X CPU Official: 16 Cores at 4.7 GHz, $749 US Price

and looking to compete with Nvidia's second tier RTX-2070 with Navi

AMD Radeon RX 5700 Official: RX 5700 XT For $449 & RX 5700 For $379

I don't see the point of a "gaming" 32 thread processor, but I may upgrade my home server with it. Video encoding, and compiling certainly will utilize all those cores... and all with the benefits of higher clocks for lightly threaded instances. Currently a threadripper 16/32 is $800, so it's priced right.
