That dumb bitch...

Funny thing is no one will wonder who you are talking about. Lol.

As a child I was morbidly fascinated and fearful of radiation with the Cold War in full swing. Watching “The Day After” (HEAVILY suggested by every third grade teacher) will do that. But yet I’ve never seen dramatic portrayal that gets it so horrifying real as that scene where she was in the plastic tent with him. That might feel drummed up for gross dramatics, but by all accounts that is very much what massive radiation exposure does. Nightmares!!

My older brother had to read Alas Babylon in high school. I read it after he did.

Started me on the road to not wanting nukes to be dropped ever.

I agree

I was a little worried with how it started that they wouldn't be looking at all at the accident. I like that they have the woman scientist character investigating what actually happened.

Yeah, sounds like she's a composite character of several actual people, but putting it is one person makes it easier to follow

That what the after show said. She is a mix of many.

I’ve been listening to the podcast on the show and it’s been amazing too. They mentioned that. She is a composite of the entire science community of the USSR. Hundreds of contributions to the crisis.

I’m not certain reality was that the whole science community played the moral role too....but perhaps collectively they did provide the spine to push Legasov forward.

It’s been an amazing dramatized role.

Yeah....the entire series has been powerful and hard to watch at times. But that was something else. I would like to say they treated the animal killing scenes as delicately as they could....but I can’t.

It was far too long and still showed too much. Half that amount of time I guess could have told the horror. Jesus.

Possibly my first criticism of the series....which has had a really good record with me. That was brutal.

Also brutal....I feel really bad for “dumb bitch” now.

Lagaslov seems the only one who truly wants to save lives. Ole Goby did an about face when the workd found out. Now he wants it fixed yesterday.

I mean....it’s an utterly catastrophic crisis (getting it cleaned up). I would say the spirit of all who attacked the clean up and made the sacrifices truly wanted to save lives by working to not let it get worse. Or that’s the rah rah speech they were fed to inspire. Heroism and Soviet was a complicated mix.

We saw Gorby more amiable and human by comparison to all his predecessors. But he also was one who got to the very top by playing the Soviet game.

Yes many are wanting to save lives but I was talking about "the council" and how they just kept sweeping it under the rug and making excuses. then the world found out. Still some excuses.

I need to watch the back half of ep 4 but those miners are some true heros to the Russians (others as well)

No misunderstanding intended. The apparatchik was what it always was. What was the comment on the show....something about “you want to embarrass a country that has an absolute paranoia of being embarrassed”. Paraphrasing, but it was along that line.

They were absolutely that way. It’s why we didn’t learn about the Urals accident, or the Moon rocket failures and explosions (and countless more) until the Soviet regime fell. We wouldn’t have learned about Chernobyl for around a decade if it happened 1200 miles east.

If I remember we had some hint that something happened based on satellite imagery, but it was not admitted to the world until the Scandinavians started catching the heightened radiation at their own plant.

Paranoid and secretive....still boggles my mind how they did that so well. They really would have struggled with it when the Internet and smart phone came along. Lol

An aside to the Chernobyl story, I came across this story. Very, very fascinating. It's about the British school children that tracked the noise sent from Soviet satellites which exposed the Soviet's spying and photographing above US airspace.

That’s really cool....I had never seen anything about this.

Obviously the Soviets knew this would be found out. But I bet they didn’t plan on the optics of it being a school kids. For that matter....the optics were probably bad for the U.S. too lol

Nice share!

I've been on a WWII kick for a while now, which led me to reading on Hut Six...which led me to the above video. I'm a huge history nerd.

Is that the scene where he was literally disintegrating? Yeah that was gruesome.
