I am gonna jinx Rafa by saying he is in invincible form taking down Nole after Bageling him in the first set in Rome ( actually if you don’t count the second set it’s a bagel and a breadstick) and win his 12th crown! I think he should be the GOAT not Federer or Nole! Did Nole even win the French open yet!! My memory of his achievements are not that sharp.

Here is what I think will happen in reality, Fed will and should pull out of the French, Rafa will have one ill fated match against one of the NextGen and lose in one of the rounds and Nole will get to the semis and lose to someone like Thiem and Thiem will win a slam for the first time in the presence of the two greatest clay court players of our times. Maybe against Tsitsipas

Djokovic won the French in 2016.

I hope not.

He's played great, and hasn't expended a lot of effort. He's played his game so far during the clay season.

He's playing like he does on hard courts.

Should we use this thread as the official one too?

Since I started it early in advance before the tournament begins I used the unofficial title. It’s meant to be an unserious thread. You guys can keep posting to make it official if you like.

The FO is beginning to get intriguing for me. Rafa is showing signs of old dominance but he is also older and tends to have Fed like “lapses” by losing to others even on clay his strongest surface.

Nole also has had sub par form after winning AO and I know he won Madrid but that surface plays a lot different from the one at Roland Garros.

Fed has shown some old sparks in his clay return but he pulled out of the QF match in Rome due to some injury ( I think he just played it safe to recharge enough for either the FO ( if he plays) or the grass swing )

So far the players that have shown promise and potential are Thiem and Tsitsipas. Fognini despite winning Monte Carlo I think hit his high already.

It's just a random win for Fognini, IMO.

I'm hoping Wawrinka can make another run too.

I think his best days are over. I liked him too and when he played Fed I really was not as much concerned about who won. He is turning into a Tommy Haas who showed some late sparks and won a title or too before he was finally gone out of the picture for good.

I want someone to win Roland Garros by playing like Henman did back in the day before he retired late in his career he made a run to the semis by mixing it up. Playing serve and volley and keeping the opponent guessing. Basically I want Fed to win it by not playing mindless ball bashing from the baseline tennis.

This guy who made some legendary calls as far as predictions go (Sean Culvert) doesn’t think Nadal is a shoo in favorite to win the French open. He has Thiem and Tsitsipas in the top four favorites along with Djokovic and Fed.

I agree. Nadal’s confidence has taken a huge dent after getting beaten by two right handers in clay warmups. That almost never happens. He has lost to two players with a no less than one handed backhand ( Thiem and Tsitsipas).

On this note I just want to say that no coach in their right mind would really advocate their pupil to develop a double handed backhand unless the pupil absolutely lacked proper hitting skills on that wing. Sacrificing pace and reach is mind bogglingly stupid just at the expense of slightly more stability. If you set up the shot with proper body movement the one handed trumps the double handed every single time.
The double handed backhand is so lame that it should not be used unless you are trying to block fast serves back. It just provides a mirror effect on fast balls coming at you. You can probably just generate 50% speed if the ball is at rest compared to the single handed where you can generate 100% of the speed.

Some years, the first round is really good. There was once a 5 setter between Monfils and Berdych in 2013.

This year, maybe:

* Steve Johnson vs. Bautista-Agut

* Karlovic vs. Feliciano Lopez

* Tipsarevic vs. Dimitrov

* Misha Zverev vs. Gasquet

* Ostapenko vs. Azarenka (wow)

* Venus vs. Svitolina

I am not sure if any of the above will be good, but one or two of them have a chance.

So Fed has both Nadal in his half and Tsitsipas in his quarter. I would be happy if he wins three or four matches and heads over to the lawns for Wimbledon warm ups.
