Now that the Steelers have secured Devin Bush who many project to be a week 1 starter, how will this work with the vet FA Mark Barron would was brought in to be the Mack ILB?

IMO...assuming Bush is the week 1 starter, I expect Barron to play some dimebacker (the job that Burnett had LY) and also some ILB...for Vince Williams.

For Butler/Tomlin to get their best 11 on the field against the pass, I don't see how they can keep VWill on the field...imo he becomes a 2 dn LB.

Your thoughts?

I think you nailed it. Barron taking #26 tells me he plans on being in the secondary more than the box. Just a thought.

Bush is the Mack starter for now. Only way I see that changing is injury.

Barron & V-Will could see some shaking up at the Buck. Definitely putting Barron in there on passing downs gives them a better pass defense. But I don't know how often that will happen since V-Will has taken over the leadership signal-calling aspect of the defense. That guy doesn't leave the field very often.

I think you nailed it...VWill wears the green dot helmet...This is largely why I bring this up. Bush can't know the DEF well enough and Barron is new to the team. But, VWill on 3rd down creates another liability in coverage. It's going to be interesting to see how Tomlin/Butler work thru this.

It's MORE frustrating how they WON'T work through it, even when the answer is staring them right in the face.

"Obviously we didn't execute" :rolleyes2:

That would be the typical response...lol

I'm hearing that Bush is going to be the play caller at some point this season if they think he can handle it. He's getting work on it in camp. If they like what they see, he might be the guy earlier rather than later.

It would make zero sense to me to have VWill on the field on 3rd down and either Bush or Barron not on the field. We know how Tomlin is loyal to vets, but they didn't move up in the draft to get Bush, and pay Barron that kind of money to watch.

We shall see.

The Dot seems to be viewed by fans as a crutch, more than anything else.

I would expect a veteran to be able to communicate and lead on the field. They were able to do it for decades before it existed.

If Barron would be that natural 3rd down replacement for Vince, there is only a fraction of the playbook that needs to be known. He should be able to do that, and take the place of Vince in those situations.

The Dot isn't a suicide pact.

Agreed. And I hope that Tomlin/Butler are feeling a blazing heat radiating from upstairs. I don't think the Rooneys/Colbert hired Austin to stand idle. Hopefully we see some better schemes, adjustments & decision-making from all involved on the defensive side of the ball.

It shouldn't be so long as the new acquisitions have the cerebral game to handle it. In recent years, they didn't have that apparently. And a lack of playmaker at Mack. Hence why Vince was eating up so many snaps.

It's pretty standard now across the league for the DEF calls to come from the sidelines...I'm not sure how they do it in CFB, but there had to be some type of communication from the sideline so I agree that should not be totally foreign to Bush. I expect him to pick it up rather quickly.

And Barron has to be familiar on some level and he did get some action in a 34 front LY after playing in a 43 for most of his time with the Rams.

The Dot should not the reason Vince is on the field on passing downs.

Any argument that Vince needs to be on the field because of the Dot... Well that's letting the Dot make them lazy. They still have signals. You need them when the stadium is too loud, or when you're playing the Patriots or Colts, who like to play games with the comms.

So let Barron communicate with that. If Barron and Butler can't do that, they shouldn't have jobs.

Is lame....agree 100% communication is critical, but that should not be the reason VWill is playing on known passing downs.

Maybe not week one, but I think it (dot helmet) will shift to Bush actually. Word is they are working on that in OTAs.

I'd be surprised if they tried this switch this season. It's hard enough for a rookie to know his own playbook. He'll need time, and for the game to slow down for him so he can diagnose as timely as Vince is doing now.

The reason I say this is ideally you want the dot on the field all the time...if Bush does indeed win the Mack job, Barron might not be on the field in base.

Devin Bush Opens OTAs Running With 1st Team - Steelers Depot

He will need time for sure, but as mentioned this link confirms that Bush has been in that role so the verbal part of it I think he will be okay with at some point.

But reading that link also tells me that Tomlin won't have much of a problem keeping VWill on the field because of the dot.

Something @FaCe-LeE-uS kinda felt would happen.

Noted...at best he’ll play some snaps as a dimebacker and some at ILB
Maybe you can get away with hiding him for a while, but good QBs/OCs will find him when they need to.

I don't expect them to hide him too much to be honest....Bush is likely to be the starting Mack ILB at least it's trending that way early. I feel quite comfortable with taking some snaps from VWill at the Buck ILB spot because I know he's better in coverage than Vince...as far as S goes...if he's sucks as you suggest, they don't have to put him out there as he would be mostly in a 3 safety sub pkg....they will just stay away from that sub pkg, or go with Marcus Allen who they seem to be grooming for that job.
