Perhaps I missed the thread on this, but I'll start one right now.
Let me first off say, I am not a Giants fan or a Duke fan. Before the draft, I watched all of Jones' games against +.500 competition for the 2018 season, his statistically best one.
My overall view is, he's a good, not great NFL prospect.
PROS
- Three-year starter at Duke. He's an experienced quarterback. He played well enough and stayed healthy enough to maintain a starting job for 3 seasons.
- His 2018 season was hands down his best season.
- Looked great against Temple in the Independence Bowl (final full college football game), throwing for 423 passing yards and 5 touchdown passes, and had a rushing TD.
- Won the offensive MVP at the Senior Bowl.
- Interviewed extremely well. Seen as a hard-worker, intelligent, and a team player.
CONS
- His stats were relatively unimpressive. In 2018, his best season, he was ranked 72nd in FBS passer efficiency, and 91st in yards per attempt at 6.8 y/a.
- Looked great in the short passing game, but his vertical game was wildly inconsistent. This is where he struggled the most, especially on third downs.
Why did the Giants draft him so early? Gettleman loved the kid, and felt he would be a great replacement for Eli Manning. Both quarterbacks had the same head coach in college. In Gettleman's mind, you take a quarterback when you have the opportunity. You do not pass him up period, if you feel he's going to be an NFL superstar and fits your offensive system.
If you want to see Jones at his best, watch his tape against Pitt, Temple, and the Senior Bowl. You want to see him at his worst, see him against Clemson, Miami, and Wake Forest.
I do think he's better than his stats, but at the same time, his production in college and struggles in connecting with his targets in the vertical game give me great pause. Good luck to Giants Nation.
