I was daydreaming the other night while thinking of the crypts and the fact all the past kings of Winterfell have iron swords. Not likely, but wouldn't it be cool if the Stark kings, unique among men given their history with the Wall and the Others, did reanimate but fight FOR Winterfell?
If they do reanimate, they will be a straight up skeleton army.

No meat on those bones. And Ned is a headless skeleton.

Might be too LOTR-ish (Mountain King), but yeah, I'm hoping for something hidden that swings the battle.

Ned would definitely be bones...as his body was returned to Winterfell as a skeleton. The rest though, wonder how cold the crypts are given the perpetual cold climate there? Permafrost (and yeah, I know the castle is heated by hot springs).

I had a thought similar to that. There have been clues that there is something mystical in the crypts of Winterfell.

Which isn't unusual for wights.
AFAIK, all the wights have some meat on the bones to hold them together.

But IDK. I'm sure something weird is going to happen in the crypts.

Actually now that I think of it, I think Theon will also die next episode. Here's who I think will die next episode:

Grey Worm
Theon
Brienne
Jorah
Rhaegal
Thormund
Beric
Ed
Varys, along with a bunch of no-name characters in the crypts somehow

I’d maybe swap Jamie in for Brienne as a potential long shot. Still think there’s a chance he dies for her and Arya uses his face to kill Cersei.

Otherwise I agree. Theon, Grey worm and Jorah seem like guaranteed goners.

i understand your pov, but we got 2 straight episodes of reviewing characters and their emotional journeys. the stretching things out began in season 6 and continued through season 7. they are milking the success and i don't blame them.

instead of 2 episodes of that though, there should have been much more detail about their tactics for the upcoming battle. it took jon way too long for him and danny to discuss their relationship and the throne. we only received a 60 second discussion and that was it. it doesn't seem they took the needed moment to discuss tactics regarding the use of the two dragons to combat the NK and his dragon. or the emotional struggle danny will now have letting jon hop on a dragon at this point. there should have been some serious sparring between these two before the NK showed up. and bran saying nothing about the NK's intentions until the 11th hour sucks too. get it out bran!

i know there is an emotional story to be told, i thought one episode was more than enough for that.

i understand that after the strategic plans were laid out and the prep work was out of the way, everyone sits around the fire and does many of the things they did to end ep2, but 2 episodes of golden globe awards, and no real discussion between bran, danny and jon is falling short for me.

Pretty much this.

Where was Tyrion strategizing and making hellfire or digging moats of water, or coming up with some contraptions that would strategically limit the # of white walkers? Or even a scorpion device to fire a dragon glass arrow at the dragon (see below on why they should take Bran seriously).

Where was Dany's leadership from previous episodes? Now she's just like, "Eh I'll just send a couple dragons." Or at least her taking Bran somewhat seriously (no surprise they'd be able to bring the dragon back to life, she saw it go down right there and Jon/various people know animals can be reincarnated as white walkers (the bear, obviously horses, etc.) and discussing what may harm dragons or ways they can fight the dragon.

Jon has led two major battles with underwhelming odds. Where was his leadership and getting all the troops and discussing optimal formations with Jaime? It would've been cool to see them work together and strategically discuss troop formations/tactics as both are great at doing it.

But nope... we get Jon being constantly pussy whipped and giving a 'what do I do!?' expression with his newfound info, Dany acting like Jasmine from Aladdin and just being bitchy, Sansa in a pissing contest with Dany, and everyone else is like, "DUR, I guess we'll probably die and maybe those dragons can do stuff."

This season is DEFINITELY the weakest opening to Game of Thrones, and it shows without the books guiding the dialogue/characters and HBO just having a go at it. This feels like the new Star Wars Disney series... Episode 1 - Reunion/'I memba!', Episode 2 - Just a mess with odd character choices.

I get this point. But the next 4 episodes are all well over an hour and I think each one is going to be PACKED with plot. They are claiming that next week's episode will have the longest battle scene EVER? IMO, I don't think they will have much time to do character development.

I dunno. Most viewers aren't going to care about tactics. I think they did a good job and creating the calm before the storm. I do think there were some minor quibbles, specifically that Jon riding a dragon seemed like NBD.

You really think there was no real discussion? Jon learns his parentage. Dany learns Jon's parentage. Jaime comes to terms with Bran. Dany and Sansa make it clear that they see things very differently.

Obviously there are more reveals but that shouldn't surprise anyone.

There have been bridge episodes that have frustrated me in the past. I thought these two episodes were great lead ups.

Or maybe they are waiting to reveal all this stuff for next week's episode and didn't want to kill the tension by knowing all this stuff already?

They showed the war council discussing tactics. Discussing the specifics seems like a needless reveal.

we got mad when Dany and Jon made a huge journey and magically appeared in Kings Landing or wherever it was and now you guys are complaining about how they didn't explain some things before characters just appear somewhere?

you can't have it both ways.

Fair point.

Let's flip the script.
If you are the NK, how do you handle which WW makes the wights?

Do you spread the wealth around or do you only allow a few to make them and leave them north of the wall.... :D
That's a good point actually. They obviously don't need to be around since the one was active in Kings landing.

How about this...Jamie asked to be under Brienne's command for this battle. I'm betting Brienne sacrifices herself to save Jamie (and they will throw a dying kiss in there). Jamie understands further what real love is...which makes Cersei's betrayal all the more motivating. Setting Jamie into a vengeful rage...enough to fulfill Cersei's prophecy.

Calling it.

Instead of sacrificing herself, is it possible that Brienne does something honorable, like refusing to strike a WW while their back is turned, and it costs her her life?

Could be something hopelessly naive that kills her. Jamie taps into his darkness and goes bezerker on the undead as revenge?

I think it's intentional to not discuss the strategy much at all on screen so the viewers don't know what to expect to see during the battle.

She's honorable, not stupid.

She sees no reason for the supernatural...no qualms at all destroying an Other.

I think everyone involved realizes there isn't any "honor" on this battlefield.

That said, she could still do something stupid to cost her her life.

For arguments sake let's say Tyrion is a Targaryen. Doesn't this make him the heir to the Iron Throne, and if so, doesn't this make Sansa the queen.

Sansa wants to be queen so bad I am pretty confident so would not hesitate to kill off Dany.

Also, besides saving humanity, hasn't Jon's wishes only been to free the North.

So, in the end Sansa gets her queen throne, Jon rules the now free North because Sansa wants the North people free too, and Tyrion moves the throne to Casterly Rock which he has wanted forever.

To much of a happy ending for Martin though?

Agreed. Troops were clearly going somewhere though, so I think it's more than just man the walls
