Who thinks the Magic (42-40) should be the 3-seed? They won their division. Where's all the "If you win your division you should be seeded higher" proponents? "If you want home court/home field then win your division."

Big ups to the NBA once again for seeding the teams the right way. Respect. If only the NFL would do the same (as well as MLB and NHL).

Eastern
(1)MIL (60-22) vs (8)DET (41-41)
(4)BOS (49-33) vs (5)IND (48-34)

(2)TOR (58-24) vs (7)ORL (42-40)
(3)PHI (51-31) vs (6)BKN (42-40)
----------
Western
(1)GS (57-25) vs (8)LAC (48-34)
(4)HOU (53-29) vs (5)UTA (50-32)

(2)DEN (54-28) vs (7)SA (48-34)
(3)POR (53-29) vs (6)OKC (49-33)

Maybe, but in the NBA like 13 percent of your games are played in your division. In the NFL it’s 38 percent so it seems to make sense to put a bit more emphasis on how you did in your division.

For merit's sake yes.

But the NBA puts so much stake on merit, including 7 game series for every round that the playoffs are too predictable.

And if you know exactly how your team is going to do.

If they mixed it up with division champs getting homecourt advantage it would at least make things more unpredicatble.

Be careful what you wish for
The NBA playoffs have been boring as hell for a few years now in terms of obvious and inevitable results.

In fact, the perfectly designed playoff system has literally almost made the NBA a scripted event of sorts.
We spend more time with uncertainty of which superteam will form in the year 2021 than any real season uncertainty.

7-game series with perfect seeding leads to a lot of very PREDICTABLE and yes BORING series.
Division winners and 5 game series added an element of danger and randomness....excitement.

I liked it better that way. Divisions made thing not so cookie cutter and easily predictable.
And if the idiots decide to abandon conferences and seed everything 1-16, it will make it only worse.

If unpredictability is what you want, just decide the series on a best of 7 series of coinflips.

I understand the idea, but the divisions aren’t equal and so winning a division against lower competition doesn’t make sense compared to a team that has a slightly worse record in a better division. But then we don’t really want to college ranking like seeding either.

Name a division rivalry in the NBA that generates media buzz and excites the fan base.

....

And that right there is why the NBA is wrong.

The whole idea of complaining about the top seeds winning is ridiculous. The hyperbole was to demonstrate that.

Kind of makes sense that the best teams through the season are also the best teams in the playoffs.

Call me crazy

^^^This^^^

Underdogs pulling off upsets are always fun and exciting. But at the end of the day, the best playoff series/finals series are the one's where the best teams are facing each other.

Sure, it's fun to watch some underdog make a run in the playoffs, but it's not as much fun when they run out of "magic" and end up getting blown out in a later series.

Not sure I agree with this. If it's seeded 1-16, then you don't have situations where teams with losing records get into the playoffs over teams with winning records.

It would look like this for 2019 if they did that:
(1)MIL (60-22) vs (16)DET (41-41)
(8)UTA (50-32) vs (9)OKC (49-33)

(4)DEN (54-28) vs (13)LAC (48-34)
(5)POR (53-29) vs (12)SA (48-34)

(2)TOR (58-24) vs (15)BKN (42-40)
(7)PHI (51-31) vs (10)BOS (49-33)

(3)GS (57-25) vs (14)ORL (42-40)
(6)HOU (53-29) vs (11)IND (48-34)

I'd like for the NBA to add 2 teams, split into 8 separate divisions, then have the 16 best teams in the Playoffs with the Divisional Champs getting the automatic bid, as it were and do away with conferences altogether.

I guess I dont see how it matters much

Other than the Strike year Knicks the lower seeds don't fare well
