Ah Geez, now that Busch wins his 201 victory with the truck race at Martinsville, he is being lauded now as the new King of NASCAR. this series is getting so bad, they are looking for anything to wrestle-up interest.

Those wins that have come against A and AA caliber talent (to use a baseball comparison) shouldn't be counted. They weren't for the King.

It's not an exact comparison but the premise of the competition each faced is closer than most people realize. Petty ran a shit ton of races against inferior competition as well. Not all of his peers would run every race like Petty would. Not only that, in those days, very few had factory supported teams like Petty which made a big difference. Most of the field was independent racers who pieced together cars from junk yards, shops, etc and modified them to be race worthy. And it showed because you actually accomplished something if you managed to finish a race since most of the non-factory stuff wasn't reliable. So you'd end have a field where maybe 3 to 5 (certainly less than 10) cars, typically all the factory supported teams (Wood Brothers, Holman and Moody, etc) had a legit shot a winning the race, which isn't all that far off from what you see when Busch runs Xfinity or Trucks. So to borrow your apt analogy, you had about 3 to 5 Major league players racing against a field of AA players every week. Both numbers really need an asterisk. It's not Petty was racking up wins against a field like you've seen in NASCAR since the late 80s until know, where the field is much more competitive. It doesn't shock you if between 15 to maybe even 20 cars in the field now are "capable" of winning. That's a long ways away from the days of the 50s,60s and even into the 70s a little bit of a small handful could win, the rest of the field finishes an absurd number of laps down or doesn't finish at all. Busch's accomplishment is impressive but it is across a field of different series. Petty's is impressive for his time, but it also needs to be acknowledged more than it is that the NASCAR during that time (50s/60s/up until the lateish 70s) was pretty different, almost sorta like baseball's live and dead ball eras or the NBA pre and post 3 point line

Agreed Gopherfan but since the culture has a insatiable need for kings, they'll do anything to create another one at the behest of the legitimate one(s).

Bubba is losing positions. Car is too tight and won't turn. Started after the yellow in 15th. He is now in danger of slipping to 19th.

This race was an anomaly by NASCAR standards. Hopefully it doesn't become the new norm.

The last Cup race I found with only 3 leaders was Indy in 2016.

The last Cup race that had 3 or fewer lead changes was the fall New Hampshire race in 2000. That was the race they used the restrictor plates after Kenny Irwin and Adam Petty were killed in practices crashes at the track after their throttles hung, when Jeff Burton grabbed the lead from the outside pole on lap 1 and led flag-to-flag.

Worst Martinsville race I've ever seen.

Texas is next week. Only real draw Texas has ever had was the 200+ MPH speeds, but that'll no longer be the case.

Seems the superspeedway demolition derbies is the closest thing we'll have to excitement this season.

I don't like wreck fests, but I like to see a few wrecks throughout the course of the race.

I think they have to take the spoilers away.
Takeaway downforce & makes them use their throttles more. Also makes tire management more useful.
If you want to run hard early, you suffer late in a run. Promotes more passing no matter which way you go.

Why they gave back the extra spoiler is beyond me. making the cars to easy to drive means less passing & more aero dependant.

Lots of rumors right now, supposedly season finale will be at Phoenix, Homestead getting moved to late March, Pocono will be a DOUBLEHEADER of Sat & Sun racing, Martinsville getting a night race, Watkins Glen moving to September and Daytona will be the last regular season race.

Wish they would move a Watkins Glen to the playoffs.

Road course, short tracks, and Daytona/Dega are the only thing worth watching a full race for these days
