Ive played fantasy baseball for 15+ years, but I’ve never done an auction league. This year, I not only have an auction league, but we have 20 teams in the league.

It is standard scoring H2H (where you can make daily changes, but you are only allowed 6 starts)— very limited bench, only 3 spots per team, plus 2 DL spots.

We get $260 to start and you have to start:
1 C
1 1B
1 2B
1 SS
1 3B
3 OF
1 utility

3 SP
2 RP

Does anyone have any tips on strategy for a draft like this?

There are many different strategies. Some like to wait and horde their money so they can get a lot of deals.

Me, I like paying up for the elite players.
Especially with such a small bench. Even with 20 team league the free agent wire should be very active

This imo is a perfect stars and scrubs format.

That was kind of my thinking. I was thinking I’d go after guys who play multiple positions, and also a couple big bats.

Then go after at least one top 5-10 pitcher and 2 relievers (who I know will hold the job down for the year)

Then surround them with cheap options and use the waiver wire to upgrade accordingly.

Not playing in an auction league and my normal leagues are 12 man — it is going to be quite a learning experience.

Looking at the pitching format. You probably need 2 top starters. And at least one sp on your bench.

And at least one reliever on your bench too. To protect you from a bad start.

Yeah — with 20 teams and 2 RP’s starting, quite a few teams will only have one closer and my buddy said, last year, one team went with no closers.

Give a little bump to Sp/Rp's. And I would make sure to pay up at OF, not Infield. Possibly even all three OF spots.

I have done auction drafts for a number of years. Here is how I prepare.
I suggest that you prepare by spreading your $260 to the positions in the league- use a spreadsheet that you can update during the draft- moving your budgeted funds between positions as the draft progresses. Two basic stategies are 1) pay for elite then grab cheap players at the end or 2) save money to grab players after others in the league have spent their money (I have seen both strategies work). Next you should have a list of elite and average players that you would like to target- this sould tie losely to to your spreadsheet.
As the draft proceeds keep track of your remaining funds.
Good luck- I love the auction format.

yea, you need a closer, but this is H2H, so doesn't really matter if you punt a category...

But that's not where RP are important in this league... if you can only have 6 starts, and there is no innings minimum, then you could start as many RP innings as possible... and RP are generally GREAT for ratios... so if you do get a bad start with one of your 6 weekly starts, the easiest way to compensate is to get good RP outings...

That is what I’ve done.......sort of. I’ve identified a set of players at each position with 3 different tiers. Elite/Solid/Cheap with upside.

I didn’t think of the budgeting money per position — I was just going to win it. Sounds like that isn’t the way to go.

If you were budgeting — How do you do it? Do you split it evenly or do you adjust it as you go?

Not speaking for Fuzzy, but I assume the quantity vs quality thing comes in play. Not so many 1B, than 2B, etc.

Would you rather the 20th SS or the 20th 3B... kind of thing, (which your cheap tier will probably tell you).

Do you guys typically nominate guys you DO want, or do you nominate guys you do NOT want?

I usually nominate guys I do NOT want so there is less money out there for players I DO want.

Thinking I might change it up this year, but wanted to get opinions on whether it really makes that much of a difference
