If we make the Brits bow to us on The Open, then we gotta accommodate the Japanese on The World Series

I have been in the close presence of Jack Nicklaus before and I called him Mr. Nicklaus when I shook his hand.
I too had the fortunate experience of meeting Jack Nicklaus. He was very gracious and seemed very interested in what I had to say. This is the kind of person that kids should look up to. I can't say the same about Tiger.

The difference is that the World Series is still the marquee event in the world in that sport. The British Open is no longer the marquee event; its probably number 4 or 5.

We were at the opening of Bear's Best ATL...part of the grand opening was Jack playing all 18 holes and explaining best strategy, etc. Afterwards he hung out during the lunch part of the deal shook hands, talked to many of us. I'm 6'3"...Idk why, but I expected him to be much taller, he's maybe 5'10" or so. They say TV makes you look bigger.

I realize Tiger has a lot of fans, and a lot of anti-fans...never met him, but have been on the tee box maybe 20' away from him a few times. A good friend mine got to play 18 with Tiger, and Alonzo Mourning (he was doing some work for Mourning and got to play). He painted a much different picture of Tiger, said he was a little cold at 1st (not saying much) but after a couple of holes he was like a regular guy.

Really? Everyone on the Golf Channel calls him that; everyone. Its worse than them calling the British Open "The Open"

What's wrong with that? It's named "The Open Championship". Everyone knows what you're talking about when you say "The Open". And I think it's the best major when the weather is poor. The courses are ridiculously easy if they play during perfect conditions but it's bad more often than not.

As far as the Arnie thing goes, it's out of respect. If I had ever had the chance to meet him I'd call him Mr. Palmer. Not like I would have been one of his pals.

I'm not going to make excuses for his behavior but it's got to be tough for him basically not being able to go anywhere without it turning into a complete circus. I like being able to stroll around downtown Seattle without being constantly pestered by people (besides the batshit crazy ones that pester everybody). Some celebrities handle it better than others. The thing that gets to me is when you hear all the horror stories from some of these guys with waiters or staff or other people just looking to do their job and enduring bullshit just because whoever the jackass is dishing it out knows he can get away with it.

It’s arrogant and false. In a recent poll of pga tour players the British Open ranked #5 in importance. Thus it is not “The Open”

Maybe US players. Worldwide there's no way The Open is lower than 3rd.

Come on, the "Open" is really a shit Tournament

Why do think the greatest "American" golfer to ever lived made the "Open" the swan song of his professional career?

Yea, this year will be the 148th "Open" Championship. So what if they have been playing this tournament 20 years before the invention of electricity.

Any self respecting golf fan knows that tradition and honor have nothing to do with profession golf.

So get a clue or stay off the golf board.

I thought it would be number 3 as well. But what the rest of the world thinks doesn't matter. The PGA is golf. The other tours are just satellite tours even if the top players are good.

I would be interested in seeing a worldwide poll of touring pros. I think that The Open would be at least 2nd most prestigious behind possibly The Masters. The PGA tournament has always been the also ran.

At least you've admitted that this is just some jingoistic take. If the rest of the world doesn't matter, I wish someone would inform the European Ryder Cuppers, becauase apparently they didn't get the memo.

Don't be a fool. Their top players are just as good, as I clearly stated, but their tour is a joke; that's why they all play over here and none of our established players play there. "The Open" LOL!

Winning on both shores is one of the ultimate milestones in professional golf.
To have the versatility to win on both shores can not be underestimated and it never is in the golf world.

Phil knew this all too well. That is why he dedicated himself to playing better links golf.

Its not a true test of golf in my opinion. When you can drill one right down the middle and it hits a mound and bounces sideway into an inescapable pot bunker in the middle of the fairway its not golf. All that's missing is the Windmill hole and the Clown's Mouth and you'd have goofy golf.
