As a guy in Utah that has been to several games I can say that the fans here take it way too far regularly. They also storm the field or court way to often.

This dude is now suing Westbrook, he has nothing to win by it, a lot to lose though. I don't think this guy wants more of a microscope on his life...
Man, he can probably run for office based off of this entire ordeal.

No rational person does. That's like saying a person who committed a robbery 10 years ago automatically robbed your house yesterday. It has zero correlation.

No, there is a correlation. It establishes a pattern of behavior.

Just as Westbrook's previous altercations with fans would be used as evidence in a lawsuit against him had he laid hands on the fan...

That fans pattern of racist comments and targeting Westbrook on his social media can be used in Westbrooks defense in a potential lawsuit or in punishment administered by the NBA.

However, previous transgressions are not typically allowed to be discussed in court. The case at hand is at issue, not past transgressions.

What I find interesting is that, if the reports are true, how what the fan said was deemed racist. Is it racist just because a black person claims it is? I think he said something about "getting on your knees". Now, if used in a derogatory sense that has a completely different meaning to me; not even close to being racist.,

The bigger thing is, Westbrook has no idea who this guy is previous to the altercation. Westbrook says that during the course of the game the guy yelled out racially charged comments about him and other comments about his family. The man denies saying anything racist. Then it's found on social media that he made racists comments about Russ in the past.

That's about as close as a correlation to the incident as you can get. Russ didn't know this guy made racist statements on his twitter, then claimed the guy said racist stuff to him directly. It was the inverse.

Monty's example is again off because he's assuming that the victim knows the perp's history. The example he is using is reverse in logic. You find out that your house is robbed by a guy and go to the police. The guy denies it, then it's found out he's robbed houses in the past. That's more in line with what happened here.

Pretty sure that if those previous transgressions are similar or related to what they are in court for, they can be.

For example, if someone is on trial for a violent crime and have a history of violence, that history can be used.

But if they are on trial for something like theft, they couldn't use the history of violence.

athletes need to contain themselves no matter what. Period. I dont care what is said. Russ should be accountable, and punished for his actions.

As should the fan

I agree. Russ needs to keep his cool, report the douchebag and the league will take care of it provided he's not Spike Lee

Apparently, the Jazz did their own investigation and fans that were in that same section confirmed Westbrooks account.

Westbrook should have done what Gary Sheffield used to do back in the day when fans hurled racist insults at him. The next time he was at that stadium he would buy tickets from some of his old friends from the hood and place them near the section where he was getting yelled at from. If the behavior continued, the offenders first trip to the restroom turned out to be rather unpleasant.

Professional athletes get paid a ton of money. It’s part of their job to contain themselves.

Just like a doctor, or anyone else dealing with the public, if they get berated. If a doctor went off it would be word wide news.

I’m not saying he should be upset, or that the fan was right. Quite the contrary. But he’s paid big money to be above heckling.

Comparing tHoop and posters to pro athletes is rich.

A monetary value has nothing to do with sticking up forself.....I'm sure there's no clause in his contract where RW has to refrain himself from taking the badgering from fans.....And that goes to EVERY single athlete out there, not just him.....

And where does it say on those tax where the fans themselves have the right to badger these players......There isnt.....If someone wants to heckle these players, expect it back or stfu......Simple as that.....

And as far as the comparison, bullshit, cowards sit behind a CPU to play internet tough guy.....Atleast RW was there staring ghe heckler down face to face.....And the heckler is actually the coward behind the vpu, because he actually thinks RW can't come into the stands after......

Anyone who wants to play the smartass game, expect it back with an ass whooping......simple as that.

We talk shit at tHoop over a keyboard not face to face. And we’re not professional athletes that are paid very well and should be focused on a game not a fan talking shit.

Look, Russell has a habit of losing his
Head. Happened last year when Utah beat his ass.

But whatever this guy said, “ice your knees” or “get on your knees”.. Russ plays the race card after threatening a 110 lb woman? I can the see the pattern here and it’s a weak minded POS that flips out and cries.
Bullshit.......Read my above post.....

Actually, they don't need a clause in a contract because it's part of the league rules re: player conduct. That's why players get fined and/or suspended when these kinds of things happen.

Nothing wrong with booing the opponent and general heckling like telling a guy he sucks, or when an entire arena was chanting "Lebron's gonna trade you" at the Lakers young players during the AD debacle.

But when a fan starts in on the players family or race, etc. Then that fan needs to be removed from the arena. But it's stupid for the player to engage the fan because he has too much to lose.

Gary never told the story until after he retired, laughed my ass off the first time he told it on sports radio after the Adam Jones incident in Boston. He mentioned he did it a couple of times in Boston. Most of the time just seeing a couple of his friends from Tampa in the stands was enough to make sure he had a pleasant evening in the outfield

Really? Even knowing that this was Utah? Their fans are notorious for being garbage and outright racists. When I saw the dust up, I knew immediately it was gonna be some Utah fan saying some shit.

NBA did what it needed to do here on both sides, but in my own personal world, it'd be fine if an athlete beat a fan's ass over something like that. You wouldn't dare say racist, homophobic, vile insults some fans say to players if they saw them or anyone else on the street. Why? Because you'd get your ass beat. Buying a ticket shouldn't save you from an ass beating. If its just some heckling over some bad play, no, I wouldn't allow that. But a few choice words or phrases (and we all know what they are) get spoken, let those fists fly.

So you make assumptions about the fan just because he is in Utah? Because if Russ does that it is really easy to mishear what was said. And if Russ flew off the handle because the fan said "sit down and ice your knees", then he would have been 100% wrong.

Now that we know more and Since it has been proven that the fan has racist stuff on his social media I am on Russ' side for sure. But Russ has to be careful here. Even if the fan said something terrible enough to deserve a beat down, Russ would face severe consequences if he obliged.

Silver ain't Stern, but to me, I can't think of many comments that would be on the level of getting a beer thrown at you. And Artest got like 70 games for his response to that.

Fans need to be held accountable to be sure. But it isn't Russ' job to administer the consequence.

I totally agree with what you said about player conduct,a mild heckling and the fines to players who engage.....

But what did RW actually lose....?....25k.....?

That's like a speeding fine to us,and for him to stick up for himself,I'll take that fine.....

The fan was over the line and Westbrook didn't get physical or go into the stands. My guess is that the $25k fine and no suspension was because, while Westbrook can't be doing that, the league understands the circumstances around it.

Had he actually tried to follow through on his threat though, he'd be looking at a much bigger fine, a suspension and the fan likely sues him as well.
