Not that I have a huge problem with GC, but more than half the time, if I'm watching by myself, I have music playing and the TV volume off so unless it's early morning Euro golf, I don't pay much attention to what is said.

Agree wholeheartedly on the British vs The Open...everyone that knows anything about golf knows the British is the oldest major. I don't have a problem with The Open, but I don't consider it offensive to call it the British Open. There is an Australian Masters and in Australian some people refer to it as the Masters...no big deal.

The Open is was I type ...it's just easier.

No issue...being butt hurt over somebody calling it the British Open is.
I see that Mr Palmer won The Open Championship twice. 1961 and 1962.

LOL...indeed. I think Arnie is largely responsible for American pros making that trip over the pond.

When I first saw Arnold's name in the title of this thread ....I thought it was for Rory's honoring of him with his throwback look.

Watched a documentary of sorts on Arnie shortly after he passed and they made mention of it....Snead, Nelson, even Hogan...they were not really enamored with making that trip. Granted, travel was different early in Snead/Nelson careers, but Arnie changed all that.

I'm glad he did because winning a US major and the British Open is what I consider a pinnacle of a great golf career.
To win on both shores puts you in very elite company.

That was hands down Phil's greatest accomplishment. Every asset of Phil's game was a liability on the other side of the pond. The pound it down the fairway, overpower everything while ignoring all the risks mentality told you he would he would never win there.

But what did he do? Started playing the Scottish Open. Using an entire tournament to get into the right mindset for links golf to prep for the Open. I still can't believe he won over there but since he did it really solidified his legacy.

If the British was the biggest event of the year then maybe I could see it referred to as "The Open". But it is clearly #3. On a lot of the BO courses all we are missing is the Windmill hole or the Clown's Mouth. Who want s to see a guy hit it dead down the middle and watch it hop sideways into an inescapable pot bunker? The only interesting thing about it is the historical aspect and the 10 year exemption that comes with winning.

Nope. Its what the British call it and they demand that ABC do the same. Its pompous and absurd.

Actually more than just the British...all of Europe refers to it as The Open. Getting bent out of shape because someone calls it the British Open is pompous and absurd...at one point it was regularly termed the British Open. I think when the USO started to grow and gain notoriety around the world, they wanted it called The Open as a way of making it grander I suppose.

Let me ask you this; prior to about 7 years ago had you ever heard it referred to as "The Open"? I've been watching it since the early 70s and never heard it referred to as that until the Royal and Ancient made a huge stink about it during ABC's contract renegotiations abot 7 or 8 years ago.

You may consider their desire to call it by its name trivial or pompous and absurd and I'm not debating that point. But that is and has always been the tournament's name.

Some Americans started referring to it as the British Open about 50 years after they began holding it and 20 years after they started holding the US Open. But that doesn't change the fact that the name of the tournament has always been The Open Championship.

Times change. Its a global game now, not one that is restricted to the British Isles like it was back in the day they named it "The Open". Gotta change with the times or risk looking silly like they do now.

If you want to bitch about tournament names ..... then the bring up how bad it was to take Diana Shores name out of her tournament. It was founded with her name & the sponsors name in it.

I always hated that.

The '86 Masters was my 1st real tournament watching and I know the American golfers referred to it as the British Open. I might tack on some more yrs...I would say early 2000s when I recall it being call The Open on the telecast, but when O"Meara won it American players were still calling it the British.

Likewise.

I understand the tour needed sponsorship cash, but to take the founders name off entirely was piss poor. When Peggy Nelson passes they will probably take Byron Nelson's name off his tourney as well.
