With his retirement announcement, I was wondering what baseball fans in general thought. Giants fans are pretty unanimous, I think, in saying that he is. But is that overly homeristic, or is it realistic?

As it stands now, he is #11 in all time wins at 1926, 82 behind #10, Leo Durocher. Every manager with more wins than him is already in the Hall. He is 3-1 in the World Series.

However, his regular season win percentage is only .498 (160th among managers with at least 315 games - 324 managers). He did manage the Padres for 12 years, though, and came to Giants just in time for the post-Barry years.

I honestly don't know...

on one hand 3 WS and 4 pennants are a great achievement... and clearly better than most have ever done...

But having a losing record is pretty bad...

not to mention west coast bias... I mean, ask the average fan... they don't just not know most team managers, but the west coast ones even less so...

and personally, I don't trust anyone named Bruce!!!

Three world series with that team? Why wouldn't he be? How many hall of fame players were on that team? Posey maybe? Am I missing people off the top of my head?

Bum and Posey are the only ones with a real shot. Although Cain and Timmeh deserve mention.

In principle, yes, he's worthy of a spot next to the other modern contributors.
I don't see him as especially unique, though one could argue about any manager on that level.
Hell, Stengel was the best ever when he had the best team. With the Mets, he's a complete laughing stock.
If Bochy goes into the H of F, it's because he's respected ... so that's criteria enough.

I think yes. He has 3 World Series titles which I don't think many managers have and I read something about the significance of having 2000 victories when he quits? Can't remember what it was.

Bruce Wayne is a big ol' liar true. But what did Bruce Lee ever do to you? Bruce Willis steal your girl?

Bochy is HOF worthy for sure. It’s just crazy how a 5 year stretch can validate your whole career. Those 5 years happened quick. It’s a lot different than the years of sustained success we’re used to for HOf’ers. Winning the the grand daddy three times in a 5 year span. That speaks for itself.

He had success at other points in his career too, like 1998

I fully agree that Bochy is a deserving HOFer. 3 titles in 5 years without the media slobber and payroll of an AL East team is infinitely impressive.

Not just titles, he was very important to winning them. The manager doesn't always matter and bad ones win titles all the time (Guillen, Yost). But for the Giants, who were underdogs in every playoff series of their runs, Bochy's pen management was off the charts outstanding and a major part of their wins. In 2014 he literally stole that title from Yost in game 4. Or rather Yost handed it to him when he didn't put in one of his big 3 relievers in the 5th inning to take a 3-1 series lead.

Bochy is a lock first ballot HOFer

the only thing that might keep him out is a rather subpar record (lifetime .498; .502 in SF), though I wouldn't really pin those bad teams on him either (2002-2003, 2007-08, 2017). The 2007-2008 Giants lineups were pretty god awful.

no complaints if he makes it, hell of a career

He'd be the third HOF manager with a losing record. (Bucky Harris and Connie Mack)

If the Giants finish 2019 more than six games under .500, he'd be the first without a winning record for any team managed. (Mack was over .500 with the Pirates, as player/manager. Harris was .500 with the Red Sox and over with the Yankees.)

I assume he gets in, eventually.
