I'm going to do my best to help Washington become this year's SportsHoopla offseason champion.

What's that?

You're great at spreading UW and Pro-Trump propaganda, so I don't doubt your abilities.

Oh I forgot to mention, thank god your avi is back.

I like your optimism, but I'm skeptical.

You can make the argument that the Husky defense wasn't stellar statistically due to the nature of the bend but don't break nature of the Husky defense. Even then, they still led the PAC-12 in most standard defensive categories. #5 in the country in PPG allowed is also pretty impressive considering we didn't have a great special teams to put them in the best position.

We also lose all starters in the secondary aside from our nickel. We lose our best linebacker and our best defensive lineman.

This isn't to say that the defense can still be good in 2019; there is a lot of young talent coming in and we are fortunate to have a great coaching staff, but it is difficult to replace experienced players.

Hopefully you're right and the guys who step in to replace the departed players will do their jobs well.

I understand your thoughts but :

To me I believe there is going to be a better pass rush presence then there was last year, ( of course if they play these younger cats coming in)

Of course with that said yes the back end of the defense has to be lock down, ( does Jimmy go more with a zone to protect the new kids back there?)

The bend but don't break defense is the norm now, ( unless your Bama) I think they stick with it and let these younger guys learn on the fly. The biggest thing is being able to lock it down when the opposing team is in the red zone, then playing the blitzing game or getting that pass rush to knock them back to make that kicker seriously earn that kick.

Good points my friend. Some of the studs we landed last year had the ability to redshirt and DL Levi O (I'm way too drained to attempt to spell his last name) really came on late as a pass rusher. There is an argument to be made that for what we lose in experience, we replace with raw talent and great coaching.

Fingers crossed.

I believe when you start stock piling 5* and 4* those kids won’t be redshirted there suppose to be ready for this level and should see PT right out the gate

Pretty interesting article on Puka. The Athletic does really high quality stuff. As someone who hates having to pay for shit, I'd say it's worth the money.

Work ethic and football IQ made 4-star WR Puka Nacua one of...

One of the more interesting takeaways:

“He just knows when to make moves, when not to make them, how fast to make them,” Apo said. “He pretty much just has a professional IQ when it comes to the game. That’s the same thing I hear from every coach that calls and asks about him — put him in a room of college or NFL offensive coordinators and try to drill him, and he’s going to give you answers to everything.”

I thought this was pretty relevant since people wonder why Osbourne and Spiker didn't play and many attribute it to the complexity of the offense for young WRs.

If Puka is really that good he will get game time this year, and not just the 4 games that don't break the RS. I would be a bit surprised to see him get full game status from the jump, but could see him work into that during the season.

They need playmakers at wideout now more than ever. They can't slow play development if a kid cam help then out. They were way too weak out there the last two years. Ross and Pettis together was the last time that unit was good.

UW has playmakers, Ty Jones being one. What UW hasn't had is a QB and an OC.

Too many injuries, underproduction, and whatever the hell Chico was doing, to call that unit on par with Ross/ Pettis and the rest in '16. But yes, at best they would have helped cover for bad QB play and subpar play calling and game planning.

Point is they need a big step up at wideout, along with a substantial improvement at QB to compensate with what will be a step down at running back. Maybe not huge losses there, but Ahmed isn't Gaskin.

And I swear if Hamdan doesn't take a major step forward im going postal next season.

Rosters change year in and year out, personally I believe this roster today is in a lot better shape then it was say 3 years ago. I think the offense does have a different look to it cause of a different signal caller, different running back, and so young wide outs that have had game time experience that know how to run a better route and how to get separation from a DB....

Chris Petersen runs the show obviously, but I think a few things could change as a result of the Huskies making the switch from Matt Lubick to Junior Adams:

1. Perhaps more playing time for younger WRs. It's possible that Lubick played a role in limiting playing time for Osbourne, Spiker and Lowe. If these guys show up in practice, perhaps Adams will push for them to see more snaps. There's the possibility that Lubick took a more conservative approach with younger WRs.

2. If Junior Adams turns out to be a significant upgrade as a WR coach; the younger guys mentioned will take a substantial developmental leap forward. Although raw physical talent plays a big role in the success of a WR, there are also a lot of nuances in technique that separate the talented WRs from the ones who simply have "talent." Hopefully having a new WR coach will allow these guys to improve on their ability to gain separation.

These are both purely speculative, but possibilities. I also have to add that without access to different camera angles, it's difficult to determine what kind of separation the WRs were getting down the field. A lot of us reached the conclusion that the WRs weren't getting separation due to Browning holding on to the ball for a long time. It appeared to me that he was hesitant at times to pull the trigger. I also do believe that Browning's physical limitations played a role in the coaching staff from discouraging plays that worked certain parts of the field in which Browning just didn't have the arm strength or velocity to deliver throws to certain locations without risking a turnover.

I was not a fan of hiring a guy without any play calling experience. I believe (hope) that with a QB who can do more than Browning was able to, that can open up the playbook a bit. Throughout his entire time at UW, I'd be willing to estimate that around 80% of the passes he attempted were either: A comeback route, a screen or a lob down field on a go route or post route.

A better QB and more options will result in a better offense regardless if Hamdan progresses much, but improvements in all 3 could really make a run at a special season despite all the changes on defense.

The Pac is still largely garbage. There are no other teams looking to suddenly become complete enough to make a run at the playoffs. Put a halfway decent kicker out there, put an offense together, and just be above average on defense and see what can happen.

Great little story to tell:

Got a buddy who's a Duck, ( him and his brother played down there) well my buddies boy is on UW track team, and so he was out having some pizza with his boy Friday night in the U district when he sends me a text that reads, " trying to enjoy this great pizza with the boy when I look up and I have to see this guy sitting across from me!"

It was picture of coach Pete with some recruits.....:heh:

I texted back and said, "did you run over and get autograph?" My buddy texts back, " stop or I'll run out the car and put my Duck hat on and tell him your name when I go ask for!"

Co-defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake staying at Washington, with a smile on his face
Lake is staying home, and said no to Saban.

Now we can exhale and get ready for the defense to reload.

I remember walking past Jimmy Lake on Jan. 19 when the Alabama rumors were at their peak. The Crimson Tide had just competed in its fourth straight national-title game, two of which it won, and was reportedly wooing Lake to be its next defensive coordinator.

I wasn’t about to ask Lake which way he was leaning in that situation. He was just a man walking into Hec Ed to watch some Husky hoops.

But one thing stood out as we exchanged friendly greetings. Lake looked as happy as could be.

Perhaps that is to be expected of a co-defensive coordinator who’s earning $1.1 million annually. Perhaps that’s the default setting for a coach whose team has reached the College Football Playoff and Rose Bowl in two of its past three seasons.

Still, ‘Bama is ‘Bama — a CFB staple that lets coaches play with the shiniest toys in the nation. If you’re looking to nab a head-coaching gig one day, is Tuscaloosa not the most capable catapult?

I don’t know if the answer to that is a definite “yes.” But I do know that the Tide released a list of new assistant coaches Friday, and Lake’s name wasn’t on it.

As my colleague Adam Jude tweeted, “guess we can now officially say Jimmy Lake said no to Nick Saban for a second straight year.”
