Shortly after hiring Mike Munchak as their new offensive line coach, the Denver Broncos hired Chirs Kuper to serve as an assistant offensive line coach.

While speaking to media members last Thursday, Munchak was asked about hiring Kuper.

“I never had met Chris before,” Munchak explained. “I’d heard a lot of good things about him and when I realized we were going to have a position open, a lot of coaches reached out to me that had been around him and spoke very highly of him. He was a guy that we wanted to bring in and speak with. I talked to him on the phone and then brought him. I just loved his attitude and his passion. Being from Denver was a nice plus.”

Kuper was an offensive lineman with the Broncos from 2006-2013. After retiring from the NFL, he joined the Miami Dolphins as an offensive quality control coach in 2016. He was then promoted to assistant offensive line coach, a position he held from 2017-2018 in Miami.

“He already knew a lot of the people here and they knew of him,” Munchak said. “He did the quality control work, he’s done the computer work, he was a No. 3 offensive line and then No. 2. He got a lot of good experience under some good coaches and I thought he’d be a nice fit with me. His personality I liked, and just listening to him talk and seeing him on the board and how excited he was about the opportunity and how well I thought we could work together and develop this group.

“You can’t do it alone having 10, 12, 15 guys at training camp and having another set of eyes that I feel can really do some good teaching. He taught very well when we were going through some different techniques. I’m very impressed with him. I know he’s just getting started but that’s the kind of guy I think you want in that position.

I have wanted Fangio with the Broncos for a very long time. It was more for the idea of having him as DC as I do think he is a top-3 DC in the NFL. The interesting thing will be the type of players they go after in the draft and FA to get this defense to the level that Fangio has enjoyed most of his career. I could see the Broncos spending big in FA for the Off-Ball LB, CB, and Safety spot.

I'm sure that is near the top of the list. Depending on who is re-signed this is looking like a decent FA crop at that position. Jordan Hicks, C.J. Mosley, Anthony Barr, K.J. Wright, Kwon Alexander.

Taking off my orange colored glasses for a second...As a DC, I think Vic Fangio is among the best in the business. He's direct and no nonsense in his approach to his players, his staff and the media. All that is well and good and has served him well in his 30 plus years in the NFL in various position not titled Head Coach... furthermore, I agree with others who have posted regarding this new love affair with and search for the next Sean McVay. DFox wrote an article, as only he can, in the Undefeated about the "genius of Sean McVay" and I agree with most of his non racial points (which are few and far between) in that there really isn't a whole bunch of genius in what he does...but I wonder...

The guy, Vic, has been interviewing for HC jobs for as long as I can remember. Each year for what seems like the last 30 his name has come up as an interviewee for many of the teams in the hunt. And for 30 years it seems the man has been passed over. And I wonder why. Wait...I guess what I wonder is what Elway saw and heard from Vic Fangio that made him decide that Fangio was the right man for the job when multiple owners and GM over the years said "thanks, but no thanks".
Of course some of the owners and GMs were very smart and some were/are not so smart...but the point still remains. He's (Fangio) has been passed over time and time again and while I think I know a little bit about football, most of the time I differ to the experts. In Vic Fangios case, the experts have, almost to a man, said "no". So why "yes" from the Broncos?

Wade Phillips comes to mind when I think about Vic Fangio. Wade was/is a great DC but a pretty bad HC. Lord he tried but I think after a couple stints Wade saw the writing on the wall and realized that he should stick with what he did well, coaching defenses, and stay away from the tasks associated with running an entire team. Thats one of the reasons I really respect Wade Phillips. And maybe I've got that all wrong, maybe Wade never had that moment of clarity and self realization...but the point is, I get the same feeling from Vic Fangio. As someone posted, he just doesn't have the temperment to be a HC in the NFL.

And lastly, someone brought up John Fox. Fox had a lot of success in Denver and for all his success Elway showed him the door. Now I'm not saying that wasn't the right move but it just seems like Denver is slipping down into the cycle...turnover of coaching staff after coaching staff which leads to rebuilds, new systems, new players and losses...rinse and repeat. Its not coincidentally that really good clubs have stability nor is it accidental that really bad teams lack that same stability. How many regimes have the Broncos been through in the past 10 years? Since Mike Shanahan and his 14 years as HC, tenures have looked like this...McDaniels = 2, Fox = 4, Kubiak = 2, Joseph = 2...that's just not a recipe for success, SB ring notwithstanding.

In the end, I'm cautiously optimistic but extremely dubious of this choice. Not because I know better than any of you or John Elway but because there are too many others who have said Vic Fangio isn't a HC, including the Bears themselves and the 49ers passed on him after he was their DC for 4 years. 22 years. 22 years between his first HC interview and now. And by the way, just because the 49ers got it wrong in hiring Tomsula doesn't mean that Fangio would have been right. That holds true for any other job he may have interviewed for.

Every player that played under Fangio has basically said they would run through fire for him. That’s a start. How well he communicates and relies on his coordinators is another thing. He has quality under neath him, that’s for sure

Wade was the same way but like you said Vic has another HC in Munch
I could see the offense being under Munch and the OC and Vic being the DC. Similar to 2015.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how well the Mafia Man delegates responsibilities. I think that’s the big challenge for every first time coach. There will certainly be some on the job learning.

Here is what I'll say is the difference between Wade Phillips and that of Vic Fangio...discipline. Philips has always been known more as a players coach that they would love to sit down and have a beer with. Fangio is more the you earn your respect from me by how you put in the work. He is much more about the details than that of Phillips. I loved our 2015 defense but part of what made them great and vulnerable at the same time was some of their lack of discipline. I think of the personal foul penalties that were just beyond ridiculous. Talib's against the Colts when it was a close game. Malik Jackson had a few. 2016 it was even worse with a lot of those guys. I understand there is an edge that you have to play with but they kept hurting the team with some of it.

Vic Fangio on the other hand has the top defense in the NFL last year that also had the fewest penalties on the defensive side of the ball. So if he can bring that type of discipline to the locker room and coaching staff then I like his chances of being a little more successful than Wade when he was HC.

As for why teams haven't hired him. I would say I do know one of the issues is he doesn't try to hype up what he brings to the table. He is about as honest of a guy as there is to a fault sometimes. He isn't the raw raw type that sometimes gets those GM's/Owners pumped up.

This guy is damn close to what we had with Phillips without the buddy, buddy BS. I wish we would give wade the last 2 years as Coach oh well water under the bridge.

We have IMO one hell of good staff this team is on a good arch
