The longer you wait the more numbers come in and the better it gets (unless you think Point or Rantanen are signing $90 million offer sheets or something).

I know I continue to beat this dead horse and it never seems to happen (who received the last offer sheet?) , but I think somebody is going to get an offer sheet in the off-season.

I think that's a possibility but even if it's one of the Marner comparables don't you think it will still come in lower than the Matthews deal?

I think so, I think max will be 10.5 million which is a million less than what Matthews got.

But why? What kind of player is available as an RFA that isn't available through trade or free agency that's worth torching your next 4 drafts?

I mean, flat out, if someone offer sheets Mitch to a $13 mil AAV? Take the picks, hope that Panarin hasn't signed and now you have a skilled winger for Tavares and 8 first round draft picks in the next 4 years to do whatever the hell you want with. Much as I love Mitch as a player, you're almost doing the Leafs a favour there lol

I guess I just look at Edmonton and the way they are wasting these McDavid years and I just think they need to do something to really shake things up, they're not going to trade #97 or #29, I don't think RNH will get close to what they think he can bring back, so their options are very limited. Do fans in Edmonton want to wait another three or four years before this team is possibly contending, McDavid could be gone by then?

I don't think flipping 4 first rounders for a winger is the answer to anything in Edmonton.

Having said that, I would be happy to accept those 4 lottery picks for Mitch Marner and you are very right that it is something they would be insane enough to do no matter who they hire as GM.

OK but is EDM so close that one more talented forward is going to move the needle all that much? They would be better off looking at Karlsson (Erik) as a UFA.

My biggest worry is how much it's going to take to get Matthew Tkachuk to sign - I'm thinking it's going to start with a 8

No, they have problems all over the roster (wingers, defence, and in goal). It really is unbelievable how terrible the management of that team has been over the last 12 years or so.

If there is a struggling team I could see doing a big offer sheet, I think Buffalo is probably the most likely. They have the younger promising pieces that Edmonton doesn't, they have at least two additional firsts in the next two years already and could have another if they decide to pack it in and flip Skinner, their cap is comfortable and holy shit would their fan base get a boner from grabbing a Toronto golden boy (although they would benefit from any of Laine/Rantanen/Marner equally).

If it were to happen, I'd put the money on them being the culprits and in all honesty they might be the only team in the league for whom it would make much sense although I would still argue there are better ways of leveraging their assets.

And that is where Marner's team is probably miscalculating (again). With all of the quality RFAs this offseason, there just arent many that would seriously consider giving an offer sheet.

I heard from a friend whose cousin goes to school with someone who plays fortnite with Mitch and said "Mitch already made a reservation for the month of October at a luxe hotel in the Caymans".

Then it does.

One reason I'm not too worked up about Matthews' contract - I'd rather overpay a star than a third liner. The Flames got lucky with Gaudreau and Monahan; having to pay Tkachuk is a small tradeoff all things considered.

If Mitch wants to compare himself to Matthews I'd tell him at the bar that there are a whole bunch of RFA wingers who are much better comparables and if he wants huge money he can wait and we can all see what they get this offseason. The longer you wait the more numbers come in and the better it gets (unless you think Point or Rantanen are signing $90 million offer sheets or something).

Oh yeah, centres are always going to get paid more but it appears that Marner, his family and his agent (who should be shitcanned in the next hour) haven't gotten that memo. They'll use this contract as ammo in what's shaping up to be a public war for an extra million bucks a year.

And that would be a million more than Kucherov, who's better and had more on his resume and more leverage when he signed. Rantanen and Point are both better and both will come in below that, and then there's a bunch more guys that are right there kind of in the same tier. If it's $10.5 that gets it done now we can wait for a little bit.

Point like Kucherov would have the Florida tax advantage which are no small potatoes.

And which gets considered, rightfully so.

Which makes me wonder why the hell the endorsement advantage being a Leaf isn't a bigger factor - I posted earlier this year a report showing that JT was making almost $6 mil this year on endorsements, which is a far cry from the "FREE HEROES FROM BIG BILLY'S IN EAST ROCKAWAY FOR LIFE JONNY!" he was getting on Long Island. Mitch can go sign anywhere else and you think Chevy's got him rolling around in a Vette on national commercials?
