I'm not sure what's wrong with our OC? He's been there for 2 years and both years has finished in the top 20 of offensive efficiency. And last year takes into account how truly awful the offense was with Wimbush the first 3 games.

What type of progressive coach did you have in mind? You're acting as though Michigan and ND ran the same type of offense last year.
They improved with Book, then they were absolutely slaughtered against Clemson. Obviously they were the best team in the nation, but they weren't even remotely competitive. They looked great against USC in 2017 (27th in defensive efficiency), but struggled dramatically with Georgia, Miami, and Stanford.

They've had talented defenses that may have been good enough to beat a top end team, but the offenses just seem to fall flat when it matters most.

Michigan has been in the national title hunt twice, and beating by OSU at the end of the season. If the ref calls that final play differently in 2016, who knows what could have been. The fact that we're right there at the end of the year is exactly what Harbaugh was brought in to do. He just needs to finish the job. And I don't think we're far away from doing that; at least in terms of a B10 title.
Why would the official have made the wrong call though?

His biggest problem is being able to get a full season out of his players. The last 3 years, Harbaugh gets his guys to play well to start the year but then they collapse when the season is on the line.

2018 - lost final two games in blowout fashion after starting 10-1
2017 - lost final 3 games after starting 8-2
2016 - lost 3 of final 4 games after starting 9-0

It's a bad trend that he has to fix. Failing to win when it matters most is his current legacy at michigan.

Your average recruiting class has been 11th nationally since Kelly has been here. You've had so many 4* just TE I lost count, but you've also had plenty of 4* WRs and RBs since he's gotten here, and outside of Kyle Rudolph and some inconsistent production from Will Fuller and Tyler Eiffert, none of your skill position guys are doing much.

Outside of putting up 49 on USC in 2017, I can't remember the last time ND had a good offensive game against a top 10-15 team since Kelly has been there.

And his record is basically on par with what his avg recruiting classes have suggested. ND has the 15th best winning percentage since Kelly took over. And I don't really care what the guys do in the NFL, as long as they are productive in college.

As far as not scoring against a good defense, we played 3 teams in the top 25 of defensive efficiency during the regular season and avg 30.33 ppg.

Yes, Clemson was really fucking good. Lol. There is a reason we were expecting to lose by 2 TD's.

We've just been inconsistent both offensively and defensively throughout his tenure, but our offenses have been MUCH more consistent than our defenses. I bet if you avg out our efficiency metrics in both on average our offense would be better.

I guess. You had the 3rd most points on michigan, tied for 3rd most against NW, and 5th most against Syracuse. But you fell completely flat against Clemson, and haven't really been impressive offensively against any truly top-tier defenses under Kelly.

Also, ND is 17th in winning percentage nationally since Kelly took over.

Like I said, I'm not saying Kelly is a bad coach, I'm just saying I don't see him beating any of the elite teams any time soon because of their offensive shortcomings.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like anytime ND beats a top 10-15ish team, they always seem to be low-scoring games. That's why I think of them being better defensively than offensively.

I think we've seen a major shift in Harbaugh's mentality and ability to grow as a coach by hiring an offensive coordinator who on paper he's given total control to; especially after even questioning why reporters would think he needed one this past spring. That's a major shift fundamentally for him.

I would agree, but he's also extremely unproven and has never even called plays. It may work out for the best, or it could flop completely. The fact that he's failed to go out and find a bright young offensive mind to come in and run his offense shows he's simply behind the times. It's what separates the Urban Meyers and Nick Sabans from the Jim Harbaughs and Brian Kellys.

I think this was an attempt to get a young offensive mind. He's not called plays himself yet but that doesn't mean he's not a bright offensive mind. There's a reason Saban made him Co-offensive coordinator. IMO, a flop does nothing but put us back to what we were last year. I can't imagine someone calling plays worse than last year.

When I said 15th I meant among P5 programs.

And our best unit we had was our 2015 offense. Nothing really comes close to that. We had an elite offense that year. Our defense was ranked 61st in efficiency. We don't recruit at an elite level so in order for us to win/compete for a title it all has to come together. You combine our 2015 offense and 2012 defense we got a shot. But it's all gotta come together on both ends. We aren't going to beat elite teams because the elite teams are Clemson and Bama and nobody is beating them except for each other.

Idk. We put up 24 on Michigan, 31 on NW and 36 on Syracuse. Those were the ranked teams we played this year. In 2017 we scored 19 on UGA, 38 on MSU, 49 on USC, 35 on NC State, 8 on Miami, 20 on Stanford and 21 on LSU. Take it FWIW.

You're spot on there. This was his first attempt to get a younger, progressive offensive mind. It's going to be the direction he needs to go if he wants to take things to that next level. It could end up being a fantastic hire for him.

Look at that. Agreement on something. It's weird.

This sort of illustrates my point. You had one year of having an elite offense and still lost 3 games. In 2012 and 2018 you didn't have elite offenses and made it further than any other year under Kelly. Imagine what could happen if he actually focused on making his offense elite.

Oklahoma has had the #1 overall offensive efficiency for two straight years, and they've done it with a former walk-on QB and a transfer QB, and they haven't recruited the skill positions much better than ND and definitely haven't recruited OL as well. However, they're elite at developing offensive talent. Ohio State has had a better offense than ND for the last 3 years and I'm pretty sure most of the years Kelly has been there. Not a single one of their offensive stat leaders under Urban Meyer has been a 5*, they're all rated around the same range that ND's guys are. They're also just really good at developing their talent.

That isn't illustrating your point, it's simply not understanding mine. Our best unit was our 2015 offense. Yes, we lost 3 games because our defense sucked. But our 2017 offense was just as good as our 2018 defense. We've had more bad years of defense than offense. The numbers just back that up. Kelly has been really good at developing offensive talent, more so on the O-line. Our offensive numbers aren't the reason we haven't won a title. There's been like 4 programs that have won a title in the last decade. We aren't at that level offensively or defensively. And right now the gap between Clemson and Bama is huge.

Your average defense ranks 32nd in efficiency under Kelly, while your average offense is 28th, so very similar.

Kelly has been very good at developing offensive linemen, I'll give you that, but I don't see how you can say he's good at developing QBs and skill position guys. At least not as good as you need to be in the new age of college football. Until he improves that, ND will always just be a fringe top 15 program on average.

And those numbers are very skewed given his first year in the program. Take away his first year and the offensive numbers are much better.

He's been better developing QB's during his last 5 years than his previous 4, so that's part of my reasoning. And he's been fine at developing the skill guys too. He's had a combined 5 guys drafted at wr and RB since his first recruiting cycle. Which doesn't include Adams from this past year. We aren't Bama/Clemson/OSU.

I see 4 loses minimum on that schedule. Man I don’t know how buckeye fans will feel about Day after that.
