FGs in College are far from a layup. Shit, they're becoming less of a sure thing in the NFL too.

True. Kicking in the college game is actually pretty entertaining because of that.

It is more interesting but it is a gimmick.

College OT rules are trash. Starting in FG range is such trash
It's arguably worse in regards to the coin toss as well. Making it even more arbitrary. It does score style points in terms of pageantry and entertainment value.

It is a gimmick. Fun to watch but simply is not the type of football you just watched for 3 hours.

After being forced to work your way down the field for 3+ hours, let's now start every drive on the opponents 25 lol

No. The current OT rules are the perfect compromise between the old rules of playing full 5th quarters no matter what and having it be based on immediate sudden death rules even with a FG on the opening OT drive.

The way things are currently, both teams get a shot with the ball UNLESS the first team with it can score a TD on the first drive. This rewards both excellent offense and defense without completely hosing the team to not get the ball first by letting a mere FG automatically end it on the opening drive. It also adds an element of making teams actually consider defering the ball even if they win the coin toss based on factors such as if they have a strong D and wind direction on the kickoff. Last but not least, it can cut down on the length of OT, and I don't think a team is getting screwed by the OT auotmatically ending with the first team scoring an actual TD when they already had 60 minutes to win the game in regulation.

Cliffs:

- Don't change OT rules, as the current rules strike the perfect balance of fairness in all aspects without automatically further slowing down extra time spent outside of regulation.

- You wouldn't be whining about OT rules on behlaf of the Chiefs had the Saints scored a TD on the opening drive of their OT against the Rams to end it instead of them choking it away with a Brees INT.

- Stay salty

Why stop at one for each? It wouldn't be fair for one team to get 2 possesions and the other to only get one.

also, if team A on its first possession then team B scores as well. Then team A fumbles on the kick off return and team B scores on the ensuing drive team A should get another possesion as their offense was shorted a chance.

Or we can accept that defense is part of the game and shut the fuck up.

I have a simple and elegant solution: Let the teams play the entire overtime period. Whoever is ahead at the end of the quarter, wins.

The rules are fine. The reason that the Chiefs lost OT is the same reason they ended up in OT to begin with, which was not getting Brady off the field in key situations sans giving up a TD.

Agreed 100%. I firmly feel that allowing OT to end on the first team getting just a FG was pure bs, but ending it if they get a TD strikes the perfect balance between fairness and getting a game over with that already had 60 minutes of standard regulation time to be decided.

Allowing OT games to end on the first team with the ball going full-on game-ending FG mode and pulling it off was too favorable to the opening offense. But if the defense can't even keep them out of the endzone, then fuk 'em, they deserve to lose.

I love how people say "well, they should've stopped Tom Brady's offense". Like it's supposed to be easy or commonplace. KC isn't a good defensive team in the first place. They won so many games because they racked up the points. Odds are heavily in TB12's favor vs most defenses.

KC's offense is better than NE's defense, and probably the best in the NFL.

Whoever got the ball first would probably win.

KC dropped 24 points on NE in the 4th quarter and forced overtime. When Pat Mahomes is sitting on the sideline and isn't allowed to get on the field, there's a problem with overtime - it's not "fine, as is". It was a BAD look for the NFL. There's no logical reason to keep the current system other than to make it end faster.

Better than the current version

Would your Seahawks whine and snivel Or would they go out and play kick ass defense?

This ain't college ball where everybody matters.

In the bigs, everybody really does matter.

All 3 units. Giving up a big play to start OT can kill your ass just as much.

PLAY
BETTER
DEFENSE

It's not like we're talking about forcing a punt. Just keep them out of the endzone.

Rules are fine. Tired players going the full 15 would lead to more injuries. First score was total BS but I don't think a team that couldn't prevent the other team from marching into the endzone has much to bitch about.

That likely if everybody score would be the team who won the toss....

Sorry, internet hiccup....

That would make it likely that the team scoring the most would be the team who won the toss, especially if they were able to run. Which would be important.

KC's D isn't good, period. They beat teams because they rack up the points. Give the Pats 3-4 chances to get 10 yards when they absolutely have to, and they usually will, especially vs KC. And why does New England's D get off the hook? They were getting absolutely torched. They were damn lucky they didn't have to play defense first.

The rules are not "fine" if Pat Mahomes is sitting on the sidelines in a playoff game because his offense isn't allowed to take the field. That's the opposite of fine, a blemish for the NFL, and an indicator that the system is need of a tuneup. (and why everyone is talking about it) I'm struggling to think of any major sport with an OT like this, and there's probably a reason for that: It's not good. Nobody has made a good argument for not letting each team play O and D, at least once. How bout letting both sides of the ball determine the winner in OT?

1. Stop saying "TB12", etc. Saying crap like that is autism on turbo mode.

2. If the KC offense was so amazing that they deserved the football even if New England had not scored a TD on the opening drive in OT, then why couldn't they win the game in regulation? Maybe they shouldn't have chit the bed for 3 quarters before waking up if they wanted to win.

3. Stay salty and butt sore.
