Hope these guys sign soon. Really doesn't look good when 2 top players are still looking for new teams on Jan.21.

The market is finally correcting itself. These guys asking for $300M+ is insane.
Not really. Arod nearly got that almost 20 years ago and he earned every penny of that first contract. And while Harper and Machado aren’t as good as Arod revenues have gone up significantly significantly since 2001. It only makes sense that contracts go up as well.

Baseball revenues only went up about $300k from 2017 to 2018. There was a huge jump in recent years, but player salaries have already been adjusted and remain on course. When factoring in player benefits, post-season earnings, and minor league deals, 56% of revenue goes directly to players.

If anyone has a right to bitch, its those non-unionized minor league players.

Why does everyone assume it is the owners who are refuse to make offers for them? It is totally in Boras’ advantage to hold off their signings for as long as possible. And they are the prizes of the year, so no one wants to sign anyone else until one or both of these guys are off the table.

How so? He destroyed one franchise and got told to fuck off by the MLBPA. Not exactly a solid endorsement of owners giving out those type of contracts. I think the Angels have taught other GM’s contract these two are looking for do more harm than good for your franchise.

I once went to a luncheon where Brian Cashman was the guest speaker(corporate event). It was pretty cool because Cashman was more than willing to say what was on his mind, since there was no media.

He actually said that his trade to get ARod was the best trade he ever made. Resigning him, not so much.

From 1996 to 2010 he only had 2 seasons with an OPS+ under 130. He had as many seasons with an OPS+ over 150 and he had seasons with an OPS+ below 140. All while being one of the most famous players in baseball.

His Rangers/Yankees contract is what teams HOPE for when it comes to Machado/Harper. Most big contracts wind up to be much worse cautionary tales than he was.

Analytics plays a big part, as does the new aged GMs.

GMs don't want to be locked up in long term contracts that become a burden the last few years.

Their age is what make those 3 different form most free agents.

The problem is this FA class has been over-hyped for about 3 years. Headline after headline, in the years leading to it. Bryce Harper was thought to be a $400M Yankee by now. It's not happening and people are freaking the fuck out.

I read yesterday that GM's aren't going long-term b/c too many teams are carrying a bad contract or two. Jacoby Ellsbury and Chris Davis were a couple of examples used. GM's also feel there's about $50M caught up in the DL throughout each season.

What's more insane is that some dumb ass owner will agree to it

Interesting enough though is that everyone else has signed for the most part. It's not like these 2 are holding up the entire market.

Also, the usual suspects are all over or would be over the luxury tax threshold (which means they're paying players a lot).
