in my opinion a travesty.
in my opinion a travesty.
Your pre-season prediction for Notre Dame was 8-5. I would think Kelly getting us to 12-0 and in the playoff would have you supporting him for coach of the year. The four teams currently in the playoff, were pre-season ranked #1,#2,#7, and #12 by the AP, with ND being the team ranked #12. Who do you think deserved the award.
i would have gone with heupel. i don't know much about him but i think what he did was akin to what kelly did in 2012 when i DID think kelly deserved it. kelly, at 12 - 0 this year, wasn't as impressive imo. yes, they did much better than i expected, but then i also expected him to live and die with wimbush. he did an un-kelly like thing when he switched to an actual q-back (something he should have done last season).
let's face reality, 7478. kelly is a lousy coach! it's not fair to the award itself to honor him as the season's best.
a travesty.
you asked me, dumb ass.Yes, I’m sure Heupel at UCF deserved it. They didn’t play one ranked team all season and even played three FCS teams.
you asked me, dumb ass.
Yes I did, and not surprisingly I got the answer that I imagined that I would. And yes, Kelly is a lousy coach. Things were much better when we had Davie, Willingham and Weis.
I dont think Kelly's a great coach. But that doesnt mean he doesnt deserve to win either. It's not a lifetime achievement award or a popularity contest. He exceeded expectations and went undefeated. Hes as deserving as anyone else.
I think a case could be made for Heupel also Mike Leech but I'm not offended by it either.
I don’t think anyone considers him a great coach, and he may be an ass, but he’s not a lousy coach. I think he exceeded most expectations this year, and got us into the playoff. Notre Dame was the only team not ranked in the preseason top 7 to make it into the playoff.
1st, not being preseason ranked in the top ten means diddly. it'a lame that anyone even goes there. maybe you'd like to look at the preseason rankings and see which team finished highest over their preseason rankings and THAT is your coach of the year! you guys really need to take those glasses off.I agree. I wasn't so much arguing with you as agreeing. @idseer cant divorce these two concepts apparently.
You're still treating it like a lifetime achievement award. By your lofty standards, Nick Saban would have more of these.1st, not being preseason ranked in the top ten means diddly. it'a lame that anyone even goes there. maybe you'd like to look at the preseason rankings and see which team finished highest over their preseason rankings and THAT is your coach of the year! you guys really need to take those glasses off.
when i say he's a lousy coach i am speaking with some relativity here. i just don't solace myself with the fact he's not the worst like y'all seem to do. my standards for a notre dame coach are obviously higher than yours. i admit i was raised in a time when notre dame was competitive every year. but, for a team that should usually be ranked top ten, he's brought us four seasons where the team was ranked in the top 20 AP. 4 of 8. and only 1 in the top ten! and he's done this with some pretty good personnel. i say he's pathetic.

You can make the case for others winning it over Kelly. Calling it a travesty though is laugh out loud stupid.
no, i'm not treating it as a lifetime achievement award. i'm treating it for what it's supposed to be. "coach of the year"! if you watched him 'coach', as i know you did, and saw the plainly ignorant moves and maneuvers he made, as i know you did (and bitched about just as loudly as i did) you know as well as i that he did NOT do the best coaching job THIS YEAR! what's stupid is for you to argue the point with me.
Saying that preseason rankings means diddly is ridiculous. Had Rutgers gone undefeated and made it to the playoff, Chris Ash would have been coach of the year. As was mentioned by jjc2009, coach of the year is not a lifetime achievement award, it reflects the performance of this year. No one is saying that Kelly is the reincarnation of Ara, or even Lou, but neither is he the reincarnation of Faust, Davie, Willingham or Weis. As far as being raised at a time when ND was competitive, My time at ND consisted of a combined record of 38-9 with one national championship and three top 12 finishes in the AP poll, and 4 top 20 finishes in the coach’s poll. And a 3-0 record in bowl games. (And a final four in basketball). And if it matters, was friends with a few of the football players, and had classes with some of the greats. I’ve seen pathetic, and I’ve seen great. Kelly is neither, but he’s closer to great than he is to pathetic.
