And to think, 2-3 years ago, the Blue Jays were a team to be feared. Now, they are blowing it up. What a shame.

Poisoned by a couple of Clevelanders. Just an absolute mismanagement of assets by Shatkins.

If they had dealt their bigger pieces after the '16 season they'd be contending this year with Vladdy Jr. coming up to round up the lineup. Could've been in on Realmuto, Thor, shit even Harper.

It was obvious that the team was aging and their division rivals were getting better fast and instead they made a bunch of half-hearted acquisitions to try and prolong the window (Morales, Solarte, etc.) and kept Donaldson around long enough for him to break down and become worthless. They had one of the best relievers in baseball and he beat up his girlfriend which (inexplicably) earned him a trade to a contender for half his value. They held onto Smoak instead of cashing him in after a career year. They drove Sanchez into crap. Stroman's long since been solved.

They're in a bad place and it's going to take a long time for them to get everything back in order.

They've got a consensus top 5 farm system, led by Jr.

Still rather be them then the Orioles.

Blue Jays fans can thank Tulo for the decision to install an actual infield at the Centre. Too many solid infielders have seen their careers cut short while banging around on the turf.

Jays still owe Tulo $38M

Meh. For about twenty years, I've heard on and off that the Blue Jays are a team to watch out for. They just never get it done. It doesn't help that they're in a brutal division.

Agreed. I'll always like Tulo

I don't really have an opinion of him as a person, but I think he was always way overrated as a player. I remember he was often regarded as the best SS in the game, which he might have been if he could have stayed healthy, but he couldn't. Eleven seasons (not counting his cup of coffee), and only played 140+ games three times.

lolz

I'm certainly not defending Shapiro or Atkins because I was not heartbroken when they left Cleveland, but it's not like any of the GMs before them did any better. Their Greek predecessor made all kinds of dick-brained moves.

He traded peanuts for Donaldson and Price, he dug Edwin out of the dirt, he drafted amazingly, he made some boneheaded moves (Florida trade & trading Thor for Dickey) but at least was man enough to admit failure and move Reyes for Tulo, a trade that without it the Jays almost certainly never would've made those runs in 15 and 16.

Oh, and he locked up Vladdy Jr.

He wasn't a great GM by any stretch but he sure as fuck is better than the clueless morons running the show right now. I can't think of a single thing to praise them for and they've been here for three seasons and counting. That's bad.

You're right, definitely can't be in any "Best" conversation if you can't stay healthy.

He was probably on that path before his body started letting him down, though.

Remember Ricky Romero? Off-topic, but his instant downfall was always amazing to me.

Old Giants regime would be picking him right up I hope the new guy knows to pass.

While I am surprised they just kicked him to the curb, I always thought he was essentially a product of Denver. Not surprised to see his nose-dive in his post-Denver career.

"Amazingly" seems way too strong to me but I haven't looked at it in a while. What's the case? I guess I'm just thinking that when I look at those playoff teams (and even the last couple of years) I don't see that many draft picks contributing.

Definitely more back-heavy draft-wise. Sanchez, Thor, Pillar and Stro were solid picks (Kris Bryant too but he didn't sign). Norris, Graveman and Hoffman never panned into much but he managed to convince other teams they were worth good players.

Not much to boast about from his later years though, for sure. Reid-Foley is about the only guy who has any promise who was an AA pick.
