Weird timing as the retractable roof market had not hit yet. But yes. Owners profited due to tax money concessions including our former president. The old Arlington stadium was just a retread minor league park and the Ballpark was a huge upgrade. Got to be there the day it opened. Still seems new but some blame the purist owners. Now we wonder if they will play on grass. I bet we don't and if we do it won't be for long

That's exactly what it was... After the problems experienced by Skydome and the Kingdome, retractable roof stadiums went by the wayside for a few years, Skydome was opened in 1989... RBIA in 1994, Chase Field in 1998 and thats when the recent run of retractable roof stadiums were opened up: Safeco in 1999, Minute Maid in 2000, Miller Park in 2001, and then not another until Marlins Park in 2012

It was a logistics, technological and risk assessment issue back then, not a GWB issue... Had the RBIA been a Kingdome sized disaster, y'all would be complaining about that too...

The market is naturally getting more expensive. 3 guaranteed years seems a bit much, but $10m/year is roughly the cost for guys like Lynn these days.

I think the 3rd year is the big issue, seems pretty small potatoes to me, bigger issue is the refusal to force Gallo to change his terrible approach at the plate, I'm betting that costs us more games next year than Lynn's pitching

Choo is a permanent figure. Might as well get used to the idea. Dh and occasionally play RH. Work around him for two years and he will be gone and the team starting to shape up. Spend some money on pitchers and get back in contention.
In regards to Willie, he is penalized no fault of his own. And Choo can still drive in runs.

Choo's contract, if he really hits like he did the 1st half last year, is not nearly so cost prohibitive as it was the last few, I could actually see him being dealt at the Trade Deadline if he's hitting well

Did productive winter meetings set up Rangers for rush of player acquisitions?

Next up, more player acquisitions.

“There will be more moves,” Daniels said. “Obviously, we’ve got to address something for 2019. Some of that may come first. Some of that may be behind other moves that are more long-term in nature. I don’t know how it’s going to be choreographed.”

The Rangers are expected to announce the Lynn deal, which is pending a physical, next week. The Claudio deal with the Milwaukee Brewers produced either the 40th or 41st overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft in June.

Each deal, including the acquisitions of Wisdom and Asuaje, met both of the Rangers’ goals for these meetings – the 2019 roster and the long-term rebuilding plan. That will continue to be the course going forward.

The Rangers still have at least one starter who needs to be acquired, and Daniels said that the Rangers will be adding to their bullpen after losing Reed Garrett in the Rule 5 draft but acquiring Jordan Romano. Jurickson Profar has been one of the Rangers’ players discussed, but a team would have to bowl over Daniels to get him.

“He’s our starting third baseman,” Daniels said. “We would have to get really meaningful value to consider moving him. Where we are, we’ve got to be open-minded.”

The same holds for right-hander Jose Leclerc, the Rangers’ 2018 Pitcher of the Year.

The reliever market has been slow to develop, unlike last year, and free agency in general has been slowly paced. Daniels said that gave the Rangers time to focus more on trades.

Trades that would interest the Rangers would be for quality prospects who have more control financially than players they would be surrendering. Shipping out Claudio for a premium prospect is an example, though a deal for Profar or Nomar Mazara would likely have to be for prospects closer to the majors.

“We were able to accomplish a few things here and have the groundwork laid for others,” Daniels said. “When the timing of that is, I don’t know.”

Supposedly, the Rangers are one of the teams interested in Mike Fiers. Don't know if this is good or bad.

Cheap, decent option to fill out a rotation on a team that isn't competing

Has averaged 30 starts, 169 innings, 150 Ks, 51 BBs, 168 Hits, 1.30 WHIP and 28 HRs with a 4.20 ERA over the last 4 years

The Phillies are deep in young pitching -- including left-handers Ranger Suarez and Cole Irvin, plus right-handers Enyel De Los Santos and Drew Anderson. All were at Triple-A at the end of last season. Some of the Phillies' best pitching prospects are in the lower levels of the Minors. Right-handers Sixto Sanchez and Adonis Medina, and left-handers David Parkinson and Kyle Young were in Class A, while left-hander JoJo Romero was at Double-A.

I would be a lot more excited about Lynn than Fiers. Easier to pitch in Oakland than Yankee stadium

I don't think there is anything to be excited about regarding any pitcher that we can acquire this offseason.

You are right in that Fiers had a road ERA of 4.60 last year. Comparing the two, I think Lynn was more affected by pitching against the dregs than where he pitched at. He pitched against some real dogs while with the Yankees.

Both Fiers and Lynn only had nine starts for their respective new teams so both had sample sizes that weren't very big.

Fiers season ERA actually got worse while pitching for Oakland.

I doubt we would get him or Medina. Mlb.com has Romero, Suarez, De Los Santos, and Irvin in order after those first two. I would be happy to get Cole Irvin in trade for Minor.

As I said when they were rumored to be after Hamels, Ranger Suarez has to be a natural fit for us.

Just think, we could one day have a rotation that included Cole Winn, Cole Ragans, and Cole Irvin. That has some marketing potential.

The Texas Rangers outfielder has been busy this off-season shrinking himself as he readies for the 2019 season. He said in September that weight loss was a goal, and he’s sticking to it.

The benefits are starting to show, too.

“I think so far I’ve shed 13 or 14 pounds, and before spring I want to be about 20 pounds down,” he said Monday as the Rangers visit Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. “I feel a lot better.”

Calhoun has worked with strength and conditioning coaches Jose Vazquez and Eric McMahon during workouts and with dietitian Stephanie Fernandes on understanding what to eat and win.

It was difficult at first, as he dealt with eating less often and smaller portion sizes, but his body has adjusted. He feels the results when he does baseball activities.

“My stride length is getting a lot longer, and I’m able to lift my knees a lot higher to help me run faster,” Calhoun said. “I think everything that Jose and Eric have set up from me has been unbelievable so far, and Stephanie has helped me out nutrition-wise.”

Any increase in speed and quickness should help Calhoun improve defensively in left field, where he played a full season for the first time in his career. The Rangers noted how much he had improved from spring training to his first call-up of the season in July.

The Rangers have some more flexibility on their roster, thanks to the retirement of Adrian Beltre. The designated-hitter spot can be used for outfielders instead of having to rotate Beltre and Shin-Soo Choo through it, and that could open more at-bats for Calhoun.

He likely won’t receive everyday at-bats, with Delino DeShields, Joey Gallo and Nomar Mazara still ahead of him, but manager Chris Woodward will have more maneuverability with the outfielders.
