Is Vic Beasley Done As A Falcon?

Every one is probably aware of the Bruce Irvin pick up this week.

He's a player that Dan Quinn has had interest in in the past so I'm guessing he was thrilled to see him clear waivers. Coach Q's comments today lead me to believe Irvin is going to have a pass rushing role and will be on the field this Sunday. We'll have to see how that plays out and the impact on Beasley's snap count.

In spite of glowing reports of his practice work ethic and effort, Vic Beasley is clearly struggling as an edge rusher getting sacks. ATL was wise to make this pick up. Irvin only signed a one yr deal, but if he produces I'm pretty confident Q will be interested in 2019 at the very least.

Since 2016, Beasley's big sack yr (15.5), he had 5 LY and 1 so far this yr. He does have some QB hits, he's close, but not closing the deal. He's always been considered small for a 43 DE and he probably struggles to hold his reported 246 lbs all season.

To play 43 DE at his size you need a lot of bend and wiggle, and he's quick and fast but not a lot of moves for a small guy. If he can't beat you with sheer speed, he can't beat you. If the OT gets his arms extended on him they can easily control him or push him beyond the QB. I think he's a decent pass rusher, but maybe miscast...imo seems more like a 34 OLB and can be schemed to the QB more than he is now.

The problem...his cap hit jumps to $12.8 mil next year.

Do they or should they pick this 5th yr option up?

IDK if sucks is the right word, definitely sucking this season, but it's pretty clear that he's more of a 34 OLB that can rush the passer, some coverage, some run support.

Lining up as a 43 DE, and beating a OT with his limited rush moves is proving to be more than what he can handle.

Beasley has a ton of value and it wouldn’t make sense for ATL to sell low. They took calls about him around trade deadline but wouldn’t make any moves. He should be used more like how the Vikings have used Anthony Barr this season. A hybrid OLB that is often rushing the passer from different spots on the field.
