Rule 5 draft is too damn confusing for me to follow closely but I do know that out of all 30 MLB teams, the Mariners have more available players for rule 5 than any other team. Glad they put Bishop on the roster to protect him anyway.

Only thing I disagree with is ownership willing to “win”. Is winning the most important thing to them, who knows but to me they gave Jack and have given Jerry more than enough to compete. They aren’t baseball guys obviously but they have given both GM’s everything needed to succeed just both GM’s have made blunder after blunder.

And I’m so sick of the Jerry was given a crap farm system. Was it good in anyway, no. But it was rated higher than the club he was just fired from and Jerry either traded away all of his top 10 prospects or in Petersen’s case DFA’d him. The reason they have the worst farm system is 99% Jerry and 1% Jack Z.

My take, for what it is worth, is I disagree with you on this and the explanation is in your own answer. If you wanted to win as an owner would jack and/or DIP ever be the guy you would hire to lead you? They are GM's you hire to stay somewhat competitive, who won't beg for more because they are just happy to have the job, and who like mixing things up to keep the novice fanbase at bay.

Your last part is completely fair and there is no rebuttal for. The ownership group has always had possibly mixed feelings on winning or profit. Problem is, even if they have hired yes men they have given the budget and facilities to allow an organization to succeed. Just they keep hiring the wrong guys. I’ve never been in the position of hiring a game changing person so can’t imagine but it just seems hard interviewing numerous people and somehow figuring out you are being played. Not at all am I giving the upper management a pass but Stanton was on the board for every GM outside (IMO the fraud of Gillick) and they have all failed. It just seems difficult to interview people saying I want the guy who interviews the worst. Which is why I’d be a terrible owner is it is an exclusive club and they rely on word of mouth from their peers. They got a good one from the assistant Bavasi but a guy who was fired in Dipoto, then a random 60 year old in Jack Z.

I've always secretly wondered why the M's don't use their available money towards getting the best front office and scouting instead of spending $240M on Cano, $63M on Leake, $50M on Gordon ect.

The best group of guys to build the farm is likely far cheaper than signing/trading for high player salaries, no?

Then when the Mariners start pumping out prospect after prospect and have a solid exciting young core, they can slowly add some top guys as the final pieces with the extra money from ticket sales, TV ratings, merchandise ect.

Am I making this more simple than it really is?

Part of the problem for the excuse "we gave them nothing to start with" is they waited a year or two to long to can these guys. If Bavasi was canned when he was supposed to we'd still have Adam Jones. IF Z was canned when he was supposed to then Cano doesnt happen or that stupid Trumbo trade and we could still have Wellington and Gabby Guerreo.
Essentially refusing to fire a guy at the risk of making themselves look bad, they made bad situations worse.

And yeah secondly not having a baseball guy above the GM is gonna make it that much harder for them ever to find the right GM. Right now its just five year cycles and then start over.

Nationals signed Kurt Suzuki. This happens every year. The catchers are always the first free agents off the board. The other 29 teams seem to know that if you have an opening at catcher, you have to enter the fray early. So what do we do, we trade our catcher? LOL.

I'm getting a bad feeling that come late May/early June, we are going to be missing K-nino.

It isn't as easy as people think, but with that said, it is nearly impossible to do when you hire guys that never had the ability or interest to do so. In order to build a farm club, which is a must, you have to have a GM confident enough to be patient in his job security. The guys we hire are guys that are either first timers or last timers and they know the only way to stay a GM is to try and sell the farm and win now...then get a real GM job elsewhere. In our 41-42 years of existence, how many of our GM's have gone on to other GM jobs? None in this decade or maybe even this century.

Your point is dead on, but ownership has never shared your, our, opinion on it and I think we are correct and history has proven they are not. :suds:

Here are a couple quotes from Stanton who heads up the M's majority ownership.(April 2016)

“The number one goal of this ownership team is to win a World Series,’’ Stanton said. “We want to win a World Series here in Seattle and have a parade and celebration for that event. I think that it’s time that we had that accomplishment. It’s something that I know all of our fans — and, most of all, every person in this organization — … want nothing more in their lives than to see …’’ :noidea: :bullshit:

Stanton says the team’s leadership — including president Kevin Mather, general manager Jerry Dipoto and manager Scott Servais — will remain in place and should benefit from the support of an ownership group that believes “payroll matters” in building a winner.

Payroll matters??? :rolleyes2: Knowing something about baseball and how to spend that payroll matters too John.:D Good luck with your parade and celebration Mr. Stanton. :L

BTW-
"Mariners have become one of the wealthiest franchises in baseball."

Yeah not sure what to think of this deal yet. I hope he wasn't traded just to make a trade and we end up with nothing. Like we do every year.

But I don't know anything about the players Seattle got yet.

I can live with that IF they are rebuilding for then and don't change the plan between now and then.

Edit: and if these prospects don't suck
