WWI -- not a fun time
Sadly though when talking about history, WWI is so overlooked. Honestly I don’t remember much about it, only that it began because I believe an Austrian President was asassinated or an attempted asassination. School curriculum should probably do a better job covering it and not just focusing on WW2.

An Archduke. We still had emperors/empires back then.

If you have six weeks to kill, read Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August. It's a great summary of all the politicky stuff that lead up to the war.

That whole period is fascinating to me. Just prior to the outbreak, there had been all these advances in science, medicine, technology, industrialization, etc., which pointed towards a potential new golden age of mankind... but also which lead to much of the actual destruction and suffering. Now, we could manufacture mass quantities of conventional weapons as well as chemical warfare, and innovations in travel such as air flight and motor vehicles were turned into instruments of war, and also a way to further spread epidemics like the Spanish Flu.

For so many people, it really did seem as if all four horsemen of the Apocalypse had arrived.

I listened to a great podcast about WWI that I'd suggest to anyone interested in it.
Hardcore History 50 – Blueprint for Armageddon I

You can listen to the whole multi-piece podcast here as well:

This 10+ hour podcast taught me more about the war than all of grade school+college. The most fascinating thing to me is how late the US entered the war. There were some battles early on where the major powers were losing more men in a single day of a single battle than the US lost the entire war. That kind of blew my mind at the time.

Having lived by the World War II museum, I have gone to it many times. Both my grandfathers were in WWII, so I have a strong connection to it. I feel like this is a great excuse to take some time and learn about my country’s history.

Dumbasses were still using 17th-century tactics to fight a 20th-century conflict. We kind of did the same thing in the Civil War, send in a wave of infantry right into cannon/artillery fire.

Heh...reminds me of when Calvin asked his dad why old pictures were black and white, and his dad said "the pictures are in color, it's just that the world was black and white back then..."

Commemorating 1918 - LSU Athletics Creative Services

One hundred years ago, LSU football players hung up their cleats for a greater cause. Many students and faculty of the Ole War Skule left the campus to serve in World War I, continuing the school’s military tradition and canceling the 1918 gridiron season.

In honor of those who did not return, 30 trees were planted in the Memorial Oak Grove with one additional tree dedicated to “The Unknown” missing in action.

To commemorate the century mark of the Silent Season of 1918, LSU will emerge Saturday, Oct. 20, from the Tiger Stadium chute in specially designed uniforms that salute the past and pay homage to heroes.

As I understand it quality programs with tradition don’t need to do this crap.

There's pretty much a 3 hour section of that podcast dedicated to scale like that. He focuses in on a few battles, some less known, just to try and portray the scale of what was happening. The French went into the war without helmets for god's sake. They were still fighting 1800's style.

I've also read about Polish divisions in WWII that charged German tanks on horseback. That might have been 2 parts bravery and 1 part stupidity

Aren't those the same people that can't fit their heads in pickle jars and lost the recipe to make ice?

LSU is by far a "Quality" program. I prefer the more traditional uniforms for teams.

However, unlike many who just have alt's for the sake of wearing them this is honoring a specific event / team. I have no issue with these. I guess teams who do not have a legacy university with world events wouldn't understand.

Shhhhhh, Keep that shit on the down low. Do you want Bama fans to poison those trees if they lose to you?

Damn it, I didn't think about that, and they will be on campus in couple weeks.
