I loved the one fan who said that Betts' glove hit the wall and not a fan's hand.

The fans are probably scared they will be eternally blamed lol

So I researched it, the ledge is a foot wide, not 6 to 8 inches.

Anyway, it's pointless to keep arguing this. All these views are completely inconclusive. The Astros didn't lose because of this call, and I'm not claiming otherwise. I'm simply stating there is nothing done by those fans that was improper. If they don't want fans to protect themselves and try and catch a ball, don't put them in position to be able to have to or want to. Calling a possible home run an out because a fan stood up and tried to catch a ball coming straight at them at 100 mph is a terrible outcome. Joe West could have awarded whatever base Altuve was on when he made the call, called it an out, or called it a home run. He decided that there is no doubt Betts would have completed this catch in real time. That's an outrageous leap of faith. I don't care how good Betts is. Half the time, running at that speed and crashing into the wall the player drops the ball anyway. Even Betts said "I think I would have made the catch". I think, but Joe West knows...

Just to be clear, I'm not saying that this was clearly interference. I only made my argument because DGF said that it was definitively not interference. I have no idea how anyone can make that argument.

I don't think the rules require that West assume that Betts would have definitely made the play. He only needs to determine whether the interference affected the play. I don't think there is any question that is true. Whether it happened in fair territory or not can be debated but it most certainly was interfernce and Betts' glove was clearly ready to catch the ball.

I just want to be clear, I'm trying to argue this as what's best for baseball, not as what would have potentially been a tied game. The play Betts made on Kemp, the play Benitendi made on Bregman, the way Boston has roughed up our bullpen, etc etc etc does not lead me to believe had this call gone our way, we were winning that game. You guys were making plays, we weren't. The hit batters, the walks, the passed balls, the wild pitches, Correa missing the bag, that's losing baseball. From what I've seen this series, Boston is the better team currently.

So it's not sour grapes at all.

Oh I didn't take it as sour grapes. It was not the deciding play but it was obviously a huge play. I still agree with you that the fan did absolutely nothing wrong, but neither did Bartman. The difference of course was home team vs road. I honestly thought it would be called a home run and everyone would know his name forever as he saved the homer from Mookie's evil grasp.

@flyerhawk does make a convincing argument that it's inconclusive but I still don't see it that way. Then again flyer is a liberal and we all know how THEY are. So we have to consider the source. Son of a bitch probably wants that guy to hire 2 illegals to make up for it.

The bottom line is that game is over and gone. We have one in front of us and it's the only one that matters now. As a Astro fan I hope we take this one and it should be a good one tonight without incident. RISP will be a huge factor and can not be left on base against two great pitchers. GO STROS!

Not true, the rules say the call is a dead ball and runners are stuck at whatever base the umpire awards, an out, or a home run in this case. He gets to make the call. He can only call it an out if he believes the play would have been made if not for the fan. I don't see how he can say it was a home run or an out if the fan interfered in the field of play. The ball hadn't made it to the stands using his logic.

Key issue imo tonight is RISP. Must make them count. May not get many chances.

And again, shitty fielding has the potential to bite us in the ass. Verlander is going to have to do work tonight for us to have a chance.

Had a chance at the top of the 2nd to get some runs. Probably our only chance, Verlander has to be better than Price haha

He did break down for a bit in Game 1, so there is a chance.... Not a very good one however
