Why was Babcock so certain about him playing Thursday?

I'm going to that game and I don't think the Leafs have won a game I've attended since 2013 so it probably doesn't matter anyway.

Maybe but if the choice ends up being Kappy vs. Willie, which do you think Babcock prefers to keep around and which do you think he might not hate to see out the door? I think that's going to play a pretty big role next summer.

If it's next summer though and Willy is still here he is presumably locked up, no?

They could just trade him and his new contract I suppose, but now you can see exactly why Willy might be reluctant to "help the team out" with this deal. If they end up needing to move salary to fit everyone and he's signed to a big but team friendly deal he's probably more likely to be the guy that gets moved.

I don't blame Willy for doing what he's doing at all, and we don't actually know anything about the negotiations so whether he's asking for the moon or if he's asking for realistic comparable-type money or a bridge or long term or what, nothing is public.

What I do know is that his comparables are pretty reasonable and the Leafs would be able to manage the cap with that figure in the budget and if he's holding out for more than that he's likely fighting a losing battle right now. If "helping the team out" is settling for comparable money to Pasternak and he gets traded after, well, tough shit.

It also goes to stand that if he settled for a team-friendly sum and then they traded him there would be no chance in hell that the Leafs would be able to convince Marner/Matthews/Kapanen of doing likewise knowing that they could go back on their word a few months later and I don't really see Dubas as a bite the nose to spite the face kind of guy. Of course, I could be wrong.

Hell, it wouldn't have to happen right away this offseason anyway. How many times have we heard "this guy's got a no-trade clause kicking in soon so they're asking around to move him before that"? This wouldn't be Dubas doing something uniquely dastardly, this type of stuff happens all the time and is one of the sacrifices young players are made to accept (CBA only permits no-trade protection for UFA seasons).

"He's a good guy ya know that Ripley, those Medieval Times guys shouldn't have been celebrating that jousting victory! You give 'em the coup de grace, then you put your suits on and you leave as a team. Good boys! I bet those guys will think twice next time when they twirl those swords! Come on, let's go, we won't have time for the knights who died this week."

Leafs shut out - has Babcock lost the locker room? His seat is heating up.
