So why trade those guys? No point.

If they go after Dozier or LaMahiue, I can see them punting Panik. If Posey can’t catch anymore, I can see them moving Belt. Craw ain’t going anywhere. Bum SHOULD be traded. I have been saying that for a couple years now. Longo will not be traded. Jones has shown absolutely nothing.

I guess my point is, if they trade Bum they are acknowledging it's time to make major changes. Some are arguing they can't even do that, looks like we both think they should.

If 'keeping the top spinning' means 4 more years of 75-80 win seasons I don't see how revenues don't suffer. And then they take a hit later when they do the rebuild they should have now. Might as well rip the band-aid off.

The FO may have different ideas, but no one is perfect and they would be making a mistake.

Sure, if you KNOW you're headed toward 4 years of 75-80 and you KNOW that you're headed to 90+ lose seasons after that.

But you don't know that. And the revenue loss that would come with blowing it up now is unacceptable to a team that is about to become neighbors with the most successful franchise in pro sports.

Weren't most of their farm systems a bit further along and didn't they also trade off veteran pieces for upper end prospects?
I think they had higher rated farms; not sure about the sell off piece, except the HORRIFIC solid the dogs did for the BoSox

Just never going to see it your way. I guess it will be what it will be. We don't KNOW anything, but I don't think keeping the top spinning will work. I've been right for years.

There's no path to that for these guys. No can't miss prospects, no impact FAs they can or would sign. It's gonna be a while and it will be quicker if they just do it right.
I'd say Bart is can't miss, but that aside I think they can rebuild while remaining not awful.

It's going to take good stewardship tho.

Interesting thread ... really not sure any side will ever get total support for their view ... this is a much more of financial decision that also carries quite a few side issues as well ... being one of the older gents on this board (72) I can also tell you that THIS situation also will arise in most of your lives as time goes on ... it will revolve around 'purchasing' another house or going for a rather extensive remodeling job! It always comes down to the revenue position you are currently in and exactly what you are trying to accomplish. If your current house is just too small, no real back yard, lousy school district or any other number of things you think are very important at the moment in time ... you will most likely look to 'buy something new' that fits your needs. Great idea and direction providing you actually have the revenue to make the purchase AND don't take a beating on your old house if you need cash equity from that house.

If the revenue is not there you will mostly look into 'modifying' your current house to try and fit your requirement. Not a bad idea if you can actually meet the requirements with a 'remodel'. Adding another bedroom is a good example. But, not so easy if you're looking for yard space or you don't like the school district. Lack of adequate funds tends to make these choices interesting at best.

If you don't have $600,000 for a new home (that fits all requirements) but you can get 70% of your requirements via a $200,000 remodel .... then you really have to look at the 30% that you can't address. Can you live with spending $200,000 without getting the yard or the school district you want?

In our case I think that management can live with the 'remodel' ... it's just not economically feasible for them to 'purchase' .....

As a fan .... I want the back yard and the school district .... the economics of this 'want' are still on management .... and have not yet translated to ticket prices, merchandising, etc ....... but they will ... and when they do ... how will I react if there still is no back yard or the school district isn't quite what I expected?

Been in this situation twice ... once it worked and once it didn't .... and you can't tell until all the dust settles ...

Great analogy...until you lost me at "$600,000 for a new home."

Did you mean "$600,000 for a garage?"

In SD right now, 600K is the entry price to a decent 3/2 in a so-so neighborhood.

I can imagine that might only get you a 1/1 condo in Pittsburg if you are in the BA...

Wasn't thinking of CA. Just visited my daughter in NC (near Charolette) ... for $600,000 you can purchase quite a lot of home. Almost all new developments are being built on 'postage stamps'. They build up ... not out. Not my choice, but it works well for new families just starting out. Most of these new developments cater to the young, first time buyers. In 5-10 years (or sooner) .... many of these families will have grown and may be in the situation that I just described ... They have a 4/5 bedroom, 2 story structure ....... sitting on a 120 by 60 plot.

I live in NY. For $600,000 I'd have quite a large assortment to choose from throughout the state. Some areas (Manhattan) would be unapproachable for $600,000 but there would be many other areas to look through.

There are many places in California where $600,000 will get you a nice house. Major metro areas (SF/LA/SD) typically are not those areas though.
It sounds like NC has imported the California way of building new neighborhoods. They've been doing that in So Cal for decades.

Here's a rumor of the Giants being interested in Patrick Corbin - Cafardo's Latest: Corbin, Eovaldi, Pomeranz, O's, Nats
Uh . . . why?
Because...

Bumgarner
Rodriguez
Samardzija
Stratton
Suarez
Kelly
Holland (?)
Blach

I agree that the Giants should never go 9 digits for a pitcher (if they have to pay a premium for even mediocre hitters, doesn’t it make sense that they should get a discount for pitchers?), but he is a solid pitcher who should be the focus of all teams.

Looking at his numbers, he looks like the 2nd coming of Samardzija. He had one good year (timed really well, just before free agency), two decent years (2013 and 2015, sandwiched around the year he completely missed due to injury) and everything else has been meh (2017) or worse (2012, 2016). Hard pass. He'll be overpriced, thanks to his well timed career best season.

With Herb, that give 4 open slots to sign or add from within.

Not a whole lot of room to add guys for the Rule 5 draft. I assume they add 4 (most likely 4 of Adon, Tona, Webb, Geraldo & Hinojosa) but guys will be dfa'd (not necessarily any of these) once they begin to sign free agents.
