I have limited viewing of him, but he hasn't impressed me much as a defender. I just don't see the upside to warrant that long of a deal (barring any details coming out a team option). But not gonna be mad at a guy for getting his bag.
I never did think highly of Nance, but I think Cleveland is desperate for players that will keep them competitive, so they did what most t teams do in their position and over-paid

That Nance deal was horrible lol but yet Wiggy was out here criticizing the Heat for basically signing Winslow to a 2 year deal lol.

Winslow is a better player and as I mentioned before, Miami will not pickup that 3rd year unless he is outperforming his contract in the first 2 years of the deal.

yah...9 and 7 in 21 minutes a night

or 8 and 5 in 25 minutes a night

plus Winslow has just an awful shot.

Plus the Cavs were smart to front load Nance's deal since its not like they would have any reason to move him early on.

As Woj reporte-d the first year is the highest salary for Nance at about 13M and the last year is under 10M a year.

Sources: Cavs, Nance agree to $44.8M extension
cleveland-cavaliers-agree-multiyear-extension

Nance's extension gives Cleveland some flexibility in later years, descending annually from $12.7 million to $11.7 million to $10.6 million to $9.6 million in 2022-23, sources say, in a deal structured similarly to Kevin Love's contract.

The Cavaliers could have significant space when the cap rises to $116 million in 2020.

The rookie extension for Justise Winslow now comes with the poison pill provision. Although Winslow can still be traded, the restriction makes it extremely difficult during the 2018-19 season. For trade purposes, the Winslow salary would count as $10.6M towards incoming salary for teams interested in acquiring the forward. This amount reflects the average in the last year of his rookie contract and new extension. The Heat would use $3.5M (last year of his rookie contract) as outgoing salary for trade purposes. The Heat are now slightly above the luxury tax threshold for 2019-20 with a projected $133M in guaranteed salary and 9 players under contract.

The Heat are going deeper into salary-cap hell, but there is a silver lining

n a league built on selling hope, the Miami Heat stand apart. By always focusing on right now, Miami has ignored the torpedoes and plunged into what is widely considered salary cap hell. Including player options likely to be exercised, the Heat have more than $120 million committed for the 2019-20 season with seven players due more than $10 million.

Make that eight, actually, as the Heat reached a rookie extension with Justise Winslow this weekend. That will play Winslow $39 million over the next three seasons (beginning with 2019-20).

Needless to say, most NBA teams don’t have eight players worth more than $10 million per year, even with salaries on the rise. Unless Erik Spoelstra plays really deep rotations, none of the rookie contract players like Bam Adebayo or Rodney McGruder get playing time, or injuries strike, they’ll almost assuredly leave a lot of money on the bench.

It’s a strange team composition. Hassan Whiteside makes almost $30 million per season. (He’s one of the guys with a player option well above his market value in 2019-20.) Tyler Johnson and Goran Dragic each make just under $20 million with player options next summer; Johnson will definitely pick his up barring a huge upswing this season, while Dragic (much older) is a question mark. Then five players are set to make $10-15 million in 2019-20: Winslow, James Johnson, Kelly Olynyk, Dion Waiters, and Josh Richardson.

In a way, this mess of a salary cap hell is what allowed the Heat to commit $39 million to Winslow, who has enormous potential but also averaged just 11-8-3 per 36 minutes at age 21 on an effective field goal percentage below 48. If Miami were angling for a maximum contract salary slot in the summer of 2019 to recruit Jimmy Butler, Kevin Durant, or DeMarcus Cousins, locking up Winslow for tens of millions instead of using his low cap hold to maximize cap space wouldn’t make sense. But because the Heat have no hopes of escaping their salary prison any time soon, it’s not as huge a deal.

Salary cap hell is freedom for the Heat. The financial situation is already ugly. What’s a little more on top?

just for the record- the Heat of course had no cap room and no picks in this last offseason- the Heat have no prayer of making cap room for next offseason-- and the following offseason- its guaranteed (unless he is insane) for James Johnson to pick up his 16M dollar option for hte 2020-2021 season.

If Olnyk picks up his 12M option (which i think is prob 50/50), that will mean that ALREADY, without giving Bam an extension that he will be due for a raise by then, ALREADY have

JJohnson- 16M
KOlnyk- 12M
Winslow- 13M
Waiters- 13M
Richardson- 11M
Bam- 5M- but that would be his restricted/qualifying offer and be subject to a match I believe (since it would be his 4th year)

So without a raise for Bam....they would have 70M, already well over half their cap committed, to not THIS season (where they had no cap room), not NEXT season (where they will have no chance at cap room), but the season AFTER that one- which is also the year I believe they do not have their 1st rounder (that is due to go to Philly).

The Johnson, Johnson, Waiters, Whiteside contracts were all abysmal. The Richardson contract looks very solid. The Winslow contract is up in the air- but represents some risk.

You can see why they were so hot to trot on Jimmy Butler when other teams have not made any real substantial offers- trading for a disgruntled star that is 29 right now seems to be the best they will be able to do as they are unlikely to have cap room to sign a free agent any time soon, and lack the draft assets to trade for a true star that might come on the market.

Since LeBron left, what good moves has this team actually made? None as good as the Tyler Johnson and Whiteside contracts are bad- 44M between those two this both this year and next year.

Aren't you a bit concerned about your cap space for next season and going forward? Looks like JR and Hill are both small partial guarantees. From what I calculated, without Nance's extension, you'd be looking at upwards of 29M in cap space. Now that comes down pretty significantly to around 18.

The problem I have with Nance, is that I don't believe there's any real upside there. He'll be 26 this year, a full year older than Anthony Davis.
the Nance deal actually declines from year to year.

If the Cavs could just unload Clarkson in the last year of his deal (which if he plays well is certainly not out of the realm of possibility), they would have a total of about 73 committed to next year- with Hill and Smith about 5M in dead money out of that 73- and thats COUNTING TT 18.5 in the last year of his deal.

Next year they will have:

Love 29
TT 19 (yuck)
Clarkson 13
Nance 13
Sexton 5
Cedi 3

Even with Clarkson- they would still have room for at least a 25M dollar player if that was out there.

What i think is more likely is that they deal Hill or JR to a team dumping salary--- and the team that gets those guys dumps them once they get them and the Cavs get something in return for the cap relief- whether its a player or pick who knows- what i do know is that those unguaranteed contracts- in a year with so many guys that in free agency that teams will be scrambling after - make for some interseting pieces.

Say Durant wants to go to NY and they need to clear Hardaway JR. to get him in there- or to get another player with him in there--- or the Nets want to clear salary to sign multiple guys, or the Suns want to clear salary...etc.. etc.

That's a nice spin, but they just gave away 44 million bucks to a player not worth even half of that - The Lakers qualifying offer was 3 million - Obviously in this market - everyone gets over-paid, but - That one is as bad as what the Lakers gave Mozgov and Deng

I stopped reading your post after this. If you're simply a #'s guy, pointless to have a convo with you.

Basketball is more than #'s. Winslow is a much better defender than Nance and can do more things on the court than Nance.

I'm pretty sure if you give all 30 gm's a player to pick for their team, they would go with Winslow over Nance

if you dont think the MAJORITY of what Larry Nance Jr. does is stuff that does not show up in the box score you are out of your mind. There is not a more team oriented guy that I have seen. One of his coaches for the Cavs said that guys are ALWAYS thinking about their points or their minutes or whats happening after the game and Larry Nance Jr is the only guy that he has evers een who without fail only thinks about what i can do to help the team win.

but it is a convenient excuse for you to ignore some very fundamental facts.

did you guys know the Wizards ahve the longest streak in the NBA without having a 50 win season?

If they do not do something this season i think its time to blow that whole team/front office up. Just start from scratch and trade everything not nailed down for assets/pieces parts. John Wall is extremely talented but he just doesn't look like a winner. Much more of a "whiner" than a "winner".

Yeah, he's one of the those "imagine how good he could be if..." type players. Great player, but there's something (usually work ethic or ego) that just keeps them from reaching their full potential.

Speaking of Nance, Jr. how the hell did he end up playing CBB @ Wyoming?

Yeah, have to agree here. I do think that the Cavs have overpaid Nance, but not at the level that some seem to think. The fact that his contract is front loaded, makes it even better.

The Cavs are rebuilding, cap space isn't terribly important right now. But in a couple of years, when they may very well need cap space to chase FA's, they will have Nance taking up less cap space than he does right now.

Nance certainly isn't going to be a star, but he can be an important role player on a winning team. He's one of those "hustle guys" that every team needs, who brings energy every time he's on the court. Kind of a Joakim Noah type player.
