terrible performance. frankly they didn't deserve this win (don't hand me that 'a win is a win' bullshit either). and book looked bad. bad playing, bad decisions.

imo this is not a playoff team by any stretch.

book says pitt's is a great defensive team. except they've give up an average of 45 points to every other team they played on the road.
they are NOT a great defensive team. they aren't even a good defensive team but notre dame couldn't figure them out. very depressing.

I don’t know what it means to deserve to lose. They outplayed them when it mattered. Doesn’t mean it wasn’t ugly. It was. But outside two special teams gaffes, I don’t think Pitt scores at all today.

Some observations from the game:

1) Pitt sold out to stop the run. It might be the only game where I wouldn’t have minded more passing because guys were able to get open all game.

2) we really miss Alex Bars. I’m not sold on Quinn as an OL coach. He gets good marks for recruiting, but it just seemed to me that Heistand had the two deep better prepared. Also it just seems to me that “Kelly’s guys” always seem to disappoint. Our best coaches come from outside the program.

3). Our defense can make plays when it mattered and they have really good conditioning.

4) playcalling was atrocious. The 4th down pass play to try and ice the game when they only needed a yard and should have just snuck it stands out as particularly egregious. It was dumb, uninventive and played right into what Narduzzi wanted to do.

5). Regarding the play calling I listened to BK’s post game presser. Blamed some of those calls on “analytics. He said the “analytics said to go for it on 4th and 3 at mid-field with 10 min to go and they were still losing. He said they needed a TO to think about it. Punting it was the no-brainer call and he had to think it over. I’m sorry, but good coach doesn’t need to “consult the charts”. They should know based on experience, knowing your players strengths and weaknesses and scouting the other team and observing their fame plan. Those same “charts” told him to go for two early in the third quarter too.

6). Narduzzi clearly subscribes to the “they can’t call them all the time” for penalties. They got flagged a few times for holding. They could have in virtually every play. Same with their DB’s.

7). Those refs. My God they were terrible. The booth review on a fumble to call it a forward pass? That was absurd.

Happy to get the win. I’m back to .500 on live games. But I’ll admit I was pretty pissed for about 3.5 quarters. Here’s hoping guys can get healthy in the next two weeks. They’re all about to get their frequent flyer miles.

Well, a win is a win. Teams ranked #2, #6, #7, and #8 all lost. We won. Luckily, you probably don’t have a say of who gets into the playoff.

It was a frustrating gm no doubt. Pitt d looked like the Miami d last yr. in the backfield the entire day. Book seemed rattled for the first time but he overcame it. Special teams were shit again. Pitt ran the same 3 offensive plays 75% of the time. Run up the middle, swing pass, slant. I was fired up after the gm but settled down after watching so many ranked teams get their asses handed to them. This has been bk’s MO for a decade

Pitt always seems to play Notre Dame tough. The offense struggled but the defense played really well. Also I believe this was mid term week for students so the players had a lot on their plates of that was the case.

what i meant was they didn't deserve to win. they played poorly and as you stated they were coached poorly (again). if winning is the only criteria you use then of course "they outplayed them when it mattered'.
but this was at home and notre dame was a 3 touchdown favorite going into this debacle. it was a horribly frustrating game to watch, which i think you'd agree with. of COURSE i'm glad they won! but did they look like a number 5 team to you? i know a bunch of ranked teams lost yesterday, yes but to ranked or previously ranked teams. not nobodies like pitt (ranked 69th in power ratings).

hey, i would be absolutely fair and equitable when the season is over to determine who gets into the playoffs. (and btw they all lost to good teams).

Narduzzi is no Rockne, but I don’t consider him a crap coach.

Most seasons I’d agree with this. This season there aren’t many great teams. I think outside of Ala. and Ohio St. I think teams 3-20 are interchangeable.

Yes I agree Kelly usually has a stinker in him every year and most years the team can't over come that this year they did hopefully they don't have any more. I don't believe this team is winning the National Title but they can make the playoff or a new year day bowl.

idseer... go back to 1963, when you became a fan and look at the records per year. You'll be amazed at how many games we lost each year. I've been a fan since the late 70's and I would've swore we didn't lose as many games as we did in some seasons. As a Notre Dame fan we have become spoiled from the past and we believe every easy game should be won by 35-42, but times have changed and the competition between smaller schools have become closer and tighter since better players go to smaller schools to play earlier as a freshman rather than sit out or redshirt. This makes pitt, Syracuse, and other schools better and on any given Saturday really good.

True about smaller schools but Pitt and Syracuse are not smaller schools by any stretch of the imagination.

I really don't think Book played that bad. I believe his completion percentage was 81%. On top of that, we now have a QB (for the first time in awhile), who doesn't get rattled. He makes mistakes or has a bad series, and he comes right back, doesn't bother him.
