Once again, John Elway uses the "s" word when talking about the Broncos run defense. He's pulled this out of his little bag of tricks several times. Also implies (IMO), that this game on Thursday will determine jobs ("fighting for their lives").

Broncos 'fighting for our lives,' Elway laments

And what blame is he taking? He hired the staff and drafted/signed the players....

It's the famous Elway deflection. I love the guy and he's the face of the franchise but he has as much blame as anyone. This year's draft was outstanding in my opinion but everyone knows that multiple drafts prior to that were bad. I don't view VJ as a very good head coach but Elway and the personnel department have shit the bed more than once. Hopefully, they see how the 2018 draft turned out and will adopt that philosophy moving forward. Of course, we'll have a new head coach to weigh in on things at that point.

He doesn't. His first round LT should be benched. His 2nd round DT is inactive. His 3rd round CB is on the PS. His QB should be a backup.

You are assuming that Elway will let the HC have a say.

Sad thing is that I'm not sure if you mean Yiadom or Langley .. or Lynch or Keenum

Ty Sambrailo ? .. Montee Ball ?? .. Cody Latimer, Ronnie Hillman ?? ....

How about Schofield - a third round pick

Sylvester Williams - no second contract .. Shane Ray - no second contract .. Bradley Roby - no second contract .. Paxton Lynch - out of the league ... How can you build a team when your first round picks don;t even stick around ??

John really needs to nail his next hire. If he wants a shot at a legit one he needs to give them more leash and back off some. Until QB position is set back off lofty results or else threats. Elway needs to keep drafting well. A vet HC is needed here a 5-10 yr one.

When you say vet head coach I am assuming you are talking with head coaching experience. What vet head coach would you like to see brought in? I am not sure I am able to think of a vet head coaching a candidate that make me excited. We will see what happens.

I was not thrilled with the Joseph hire but I think we could still do worse. I am really torn on what the Broncos should do. There are starting be visible cracks in the locker room and that is something that has to be corrected if this coaching staff has any chance of succeeding. The best way to fix those cracks is winning. This team may not be Super Bowl contenders but they are better then the team was last year. The bar might be set pretty low on that one though.

I have no idea on HC choice I'd make. I want someone with HC experience but, John imo would have to pull back if he wants A level hire. I just think its obvious VJ era will be over unless we turn it around bigtime. Do you see us winning 8 out of 10 games to reach playoffs?

Oddly enough I do see the potential that this team could make the playoffs. Just a couple of plays in Ravens, Chiefs, and Rams games and they are wins. If we are going into the Arizona game at 5-1 there is now way we are calling for Joseph to be fired. To me the players have to play more disciplined. I have not been able to watch the last couple of games but when you get gashed like they have been on Defense it comes down to poor discipline and poor tackling. The players have to want it and until they want it more then the other team it doesn't matter who the head coach is.

One guy that kind of intrigues me as a vet Head Coach candidate and I really don't know why is Jim Schwartz.

Saw or heard a report that Elway has buyers remorse, and that his gut told him to go with Shanny Jr.

His last draft he went with his gut a lot more on picks, and listened to his scouts.

I like that he seems to have made some self corrections; hopefully this plays out well in the long run.

FYI, there's a few coaches that might not come back, depending on their schedule. A few off the top of my head:

Harbaugh (either one, but John first).
Gase (might take some extra apologies).
Shaw (Stanford gig is pretty sweet).
Schwartz (not sure he's a great fit).

And then there's also McCarthy, who might also be available.

Too early really to say right now, but frankly I like our chances. Hell, maybe Shanny Sr. comes back.

No thanks on the Shanny Sr., the Harbaughs, or Gase. I don't' think McCarthy will be available either.

What about Dennis Allen? He was here and did a good job. I think he kind of got a raw deal in Oakland, but a lot of people do. He might be able to bring Mike Nolan with and that could be a very nice beginning to the staff.

If the Browns fire Hue Jackson I would take him.

Honestly I hope the Broncos go on a tear to finish the year with 8-2 and Vance is around another year and we don't have to find a new head coach. I really don't believe that be reasonable but when I look through my orange and blue glasses after sipping the Kool Aid it could happen.

The only coach that has been worse than Vance is Kyle Shanahan so I think we dodged one there, I mean it's not like there's a huge gap but I'd rather have Vance.

No thanks on either Shanahan

I liked Megalodon's mention of Mike Nolan

And Mike Sullivan - already on staff - might be a guy to look at ... He's never been a HC, but he interviewed for the Bears HC spot in 2012 ..

I think the position of HC is the hardest for fans to judge .. Former QB and offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak comes in and how does the team win a SB ?? ... Wade Phillips and a great defense .. That Bronco team's identity was defense ..

There are a lot of other examples of that -- Brian Billick leads the Vikings to all-time great stats on offense as the offensive coordinator and then goes to the Ravens and the team wins a SB with defense ..

Wade said himself that he's good DC but a terrible HC ....

The staff is just as important
