I think they really need to see 4 starts from him to gauge how competitive he is for 2019.

Listening to Kruk this morning, I think his glass-half-full reasoning is sound:
1. We got the emergence of DRod, Suarez, and he thinks Strat is sound now
2. We got Duggar, Slater, Hanson, and Holland as pleasant surprises.
3. Bum should be fully healthy next year
4. We should know about Shark by end of season

I think we are looking ok for next year with:

SP: Bum/Shark/DRod/Suarez/Strat (Blach, Holland, Kelly)
RP: Dyson/MM/Moronta/Smith/Strick/Watson (Blach, Holland, Kelly)
C: Buster/Hundo
IF: BB9/Dozens/Craw/Longo/Hanson/Panda
OF: Duggar/Gork/Slater/Shaw/Mac

This is assuming Cutch is gone, Shaw and Mac are recovered. I also think the FO will try hard to add an OF and/or SP.
Based on this year, why would that lineup not be the shitty weak link it was this year? That's not a playoff hitting team. Needs AT LEAST one big time bat. Maybe not Harper who will be crap at AT&T.

You're just running the same team back out. Not gonna do it.

I think there is a better than slim chance that Belt will be traded this year to open 1B for Posey. Hip surgery is no joke.

Very possible. So trade our best hitter that should help the offense.

Just looked at next year's FA crop, the only names that have any chance of picking up our offense are Harper and Machado. I'm not saying anything you guys don't already suspect but I think it's gonna be a long while before we compete for another title. And that's ok, we got ours.

Although, Yasmani Grandal might be a good Posey replacement if we do have to move him to first.

I was just thinking about how both positions would suffer offensively if Belt is traded and Posey moves to first. My concern is that Posey's numbers, at this point, will be similar to what Joe Maurer has done since moving to 1st base. Despite Hundley's hot start, his offense (and probably defense) would be a downgrade from Posey. Grandal could make up that difference. Maybe Garcia could be his backup and let Hundley walk.

To be clear: I don't think they'll "run the same team back out." I DO think that Buster, Belt, Panik, Craw, and Longo won't all have subpar years again though. The outfield and the SP are larger questions.

They probably will make the playoffs but if they miss it wouldn't be that big a surprise, they are playing like shit. ANd we can certainly hope they don't win the division.

There are 8 NL teams vying for 5 spots and right now they have the worst record of the 8
After another cave in last night, I would think the odds are less than 50% now. A sports writer actually used the p word in an article today. Panic.

I think that might be wishful thinking a bit, they are still a good team and plenty of time left. But hope you're right!

And I did also say this.

Yeah, I still kinda stand by that as opposed to blowing it up. That team, if healthy, will be ok.
Understood. Don't agree but it's not impossible. They absolutely need a big time thumper bat, but only 2 are available as FAs and we aren't getting either.

I just don't see how this team will be any better than .500 without it.

Well they won't do nothing at all, of course. But they do have a choice. Keep basically the same team, maybe add one OF and a pitcher, add a bench guy or two....that's running the same team back. That shit won't work.

Or, they do full rebuild. Now I'm not saying they will do that. But those are the only choices in front of them.

I could see them trading Belt/Panik/Strick or something like that.

Sure, me too, but that's just tinkering and in no way makes for a winning team or puts more butts in the seats.

really just depends upon two things
1. who they get back; and
2. who they spend on in FA.

Belt tied for his 2nd worst season of his career, Panik had the worst season of his career and is sliding defensively. Strickland got knocked around something horrible after he came back from his self inflicted injury. The Giants would have to sell their virtues hard to get back decent returns. I don't see a trade scenario that makes this team better.
Do you realistically see the Giants signing either Harper or Machado? If not, who do they sign that makes this club significantly better?

I don't see a FA out there besides Harper (likely a Turdinal) or Machado (likely a doyer) that would help much. So, IMO, it's gotta be a trade. I think both Belt and Panik have value but we would not be selling high. Strick probably has a little more value. In any event, the bullpen is where they could deal a vet since Moronta's emergence.

I'm not sure who'll the new GM will target, but she probably has a few guys in mind.
