Because they fail to draft any top ones.

Belichek historically will draft a DL, OL, LB with a first round pick. He hates drafting skill players or DBs in the first round. He believes that he can find adequate players later. Brandon Merriweather comes immediately to mind of how badly they grasped at straws.

Only when he's up against the wall will he draft a DB early. The other and more serious problem is that he will not pay them when their contracts are up. Assante Samuel, Maicolm Butler, Lawyer Milloy , Ty Law are a few that come to mind.

The other problem is that the Patriots do not scout full time. They employ their scouts in November and they primarily look at certain positions and don't go to much more than the Senior Bowls and maybe a couple of lower level bowl games because they don't generally draft high enough to get the "Can't Miss" players.

One other thing that has become more evident with the growth of the media, Bill Belichick will not draft anyone that the media has annointed as the perfect player for the patriots. Heaven forbid that anyone other than Bill knows what's best for this team.

This has been a problem for a while. BB drafts slow ass players. BB is stuck in the 90's in this aspect. They looked so damn slow against Atlanta. Speed has been desperately needed for years.

Everyone was all over my ass in July when I said that the new brand of football and football player has passed Belichick by. His system works when he can bring in players who have no where else to go. He's also been successful with problem guys who either drink the Kool-Aid or apply at Wendy's.

6'8" 385 lb OTs can't handle the speed of of 6'5" 255 lb. DEs. Bently is the only LB who can really run down a RB or WR. He's the LB of the future. Sam is just like him only a bit frail.

If he's not stuck in time (Parcells) he has to start changing now and Casario has to get some scouting out to watch the Big 10, SEC, Acc and Pac 12. Probably be smart to have at least 8 to cover all of the teams and narrow down to the kids that look like they can fill your immediate needs, but during the season and not the Bowl Games.
