Defenders just have to stop being mean to the QB.

Was he off his feet?

Anyone falling down will come off his feet.

That is NOT launching. You can start talking about launching when (a) the defender is off the ground before making contact (he was not), and (b) actually displays an upward motion when his feet are on the ground (which he was not).

Anyone seeing that "penalty" on Clay Mathews yesterday and can't see a problem needs to be institutionalized. I have no idea what a defender is supposed to do when he sacks the QB now. They have simply got to fix this problem.
I agree. I'm not sure how to fix it though. Maybe every roughing the passer penalty needs to be reviewed. I think both against Mathews would have been overturned.
It is annoying when the announcers are raving about the QB's escaping sacks when it is obvious that the defenders are laying off for fear of a flag.

Everything...including menacing looks and cursing at them

I think if the defensive player breathes in the QB's face, and he ate onions before the game, that should be an automatic ejection

I thought Clay's hit yesterday was clean....
I think this is going to get even worse, for both sides, Colts got a sack with "in the grasp" call yesterday...

His penalty was the same as the one above on Garoppolo with the Pats, just from a different angle. You can't launch at the QB and come down with all your weight onto him.

If the Matthews tackle was a legitimate application of the rule, they need to change it. We've all seen defenders intentionally see that all of their weight lands on top of the QB when they tackle them. I don't think that was the case with Matthews. I also don't know how they fix it without saying that the refs should simply use some discretion and judgement... the dreaded "eye test". But many calls are judgement calls when you come down to it.

I'm actually surprised there are people on here defending the new roughing rule. It's pretty much one of the worst rule changes on a long list of horrible rule changes.

Go back five years and get rid of all the roughing changes. Add the ones that cause a lot of injuries back and leave out the ones causing bullshit interpretations by officials.

Is it a bad rule or a bad interpretation of the rule?

If they are going to continue with calling it like this (which they will), they need to be quick in calling "in the grasp" when the QB is grabbed. Don't leave time for the defenders to have to tackle him.

"A rushing defender is prohibited from committing such intimidating and punishing acts as “stuffing” a passer into the ground or unnecessarily wrestling or driving him down after the passer has thrown the ball ... When tackling a passer who is in a defenseless posture (e.g., during or just after throwing a pass), a defensive player must not unnecessarily or violently throw him down and land on top of him with all or most of the defender’s weight. Instead, the defensive player must strive to wrap up the passer with the defensive player’s arms and not land on the passer.

The "unnecessarily" qualifier seems to be the key here. The refs like for things to be cut and dried and don't like to have to make calls in the grey areas. But this new rule requires them to.

The play where Rodgers was hurt was a good example of what they're trying to stop. The defender looked as if he was going to roll over Rodgers on the way down and hit the ground himself, but he made a last second move to make sure Rodgers was under him so he could land on top of him with all of his weight with Rodgers turned to land on his side/shoulder. That looked intentional. What Matthews did .. did not.

He does not.

Matthews is pretty much a victim of not being able to defy the laws of physics. And - as pointed out by others - going in any other way means that any QB could escape.

As some people already pointed out:

- On Luck's long run, defenders seemed hesitate to come in, fearing a flag.
- Drew Brees actually scoring rushing TD's is as much a product of defenders being afraid to be flagged or fined because of hitting a QB (either body weight or helmet-stuff).

I was actually stunned when the refs picked up the flag in the Eagles vs Colts game for that collision. Where actually picking up the flag was common sense.
Bees sites in a QB sneak. Servers being scared has nothing to do with it.

I don't know what you are watching if you think Matthews isn't still playing by the old rules. He's landing right on top of these guys. Doesn't even roll off like he easily could and would if he understood the rule and was smart.
