I'll be very specific. The hit that ended Jimmy Garappolo's season and the one that ended Aaron Rodger's. It all depends upon whether you see physical punishment as part of the game. Indeed, physical intimidation can gain an advantage and has been a thing of years past but there is no football-strategic advantage to it.

Jimmy blew out his knee before any contact was made.

Well after the ball was gone the tackler pile-drove him into the ground with all of his force and weight in an attempt to deliver physical punishment. Fact.

Whether you accept that as part of the game is the only discussion.

What the hell were you watching?

Which is the rule. It's not that hard for the defender to just spin him on that tackle. 300 lbs on a collarbone, shoulder, sternum, or ribs?

If they say Matthew's penalty today was a legit penalty, they need to fix that. Aside from that, the rule is fine as is. I don't need an NFL with scrubs under center because the starters are injured.

Force the qb to wear bigger shoulder pads/rib pads and the problem is solved.

Bradshaw's IQ went from 35 to 50 after that hit. He should thank Turkey!

Anyone seeing that "penalty" on Clay Mathews yesterday and can't see a problem needs to be institutionalized. I have no idea what a defender is supposed to do when he sacks the QB now. They have simply got to fix this problem.

They made it pretty simple now.
Don't land on the QB.

Matthews keeps being retarded and trying to drive QBs into the ground like you used to be able to do.

Seems like they went them to arm tackling which will cause a shit load of broken tackles and stingers for the defenders making the tackle

Perfectly good tackle. The only actual way to tackle a player coming from those angles.

His penalty was the same as the one above on Garoppolo with the Pats, just from a different angle. You can't launch at the QB and come down with all your weight onto him.

He does not.

Matthews is pretty much a victim of not being able to defy the laws of physics. And - as pointed out by others - going in any other way means that any QB could escape.

As some people already pointed out:

- On Luck's long run, defenders seemed hesitate to come in, fearing a flag.
- Drew Brees actually scoring rushing TD's is as much a product of defenders being afraid to be flagged or fined because of hitting a QB (either body weight or helmet-stuff).

I was actually stunned when the refs picked up the flag in the Eagles vs Colts game for that collision. Where actually picking up the flag was common sense.

That is NOT launching at all.

Not only that - also turning the game into Tecmo, as it means that WR's will be running free all over the place. And trying to catch yourself on the hands, as a defender will also result in many injured hands and wrists.
