Irving & Butler would recruit others to come play there.

I think it would be smarter to get at least two years of high picks in, then recruit one star to come and see what you've got.

With two max salaries, it's just being handcuffed all over again.

Sure.

But how many guys on Brooklyn's current roster do you see as potential core players in good team?

Dinwiddie, RHJ, Allen and Levert are all solid, but I don't think any will ever be anything more than a league average starter type. I could be wrong there, but I don't see it at the moment.

As @trojanfan12 said, you usually need more than just a market to attract star talent. It is possible the Nets get somebody next summer, but I will be betting against it until I see it happen with my own eyes.

Lastly, if they do sign 1 fringe max type, they will be in that purgatory range nobody wants to be in.

Where would Irving and Butler team up if not in Brooklyn??? Because you know neither of them would go to the Pacers by themselves. :heh:

(Not that I would want either of them anyway.)

True and you're really not going anywhere far with Butler and Irving.

Maybe 2nd round of the playoffs

Sean Marks has basically done all of this since joining the Nets

That's good. I don't really pay a lot of attention to them. I still think 2019 is a little early. But, if they play well, who knows?

Yeah just need to keep on showing improvement and maybe get a big player or 2 to at least take a meeting with them in the summer.

As far as being handcuffed, that depends on what max guys you get. The rumor DJ mentioned about Kyrie and Butler would handcuff them. As bks said, they'd be be looking at 2nd round playoff exits for the foreseeable future.

But if they could get a couple of max guys who can get them deep into the playoffs and maybe even the finals. You don't mind being handcuffed.

Good point. I don't think the Nets are even at the stage where they can get a meeting yet. The Lakers managed to keep getting meetings because they are still a big enough "name" that players (or at least their agents) probably felt like they kind of had to meet with them.

But I don't think anyone was taking them seriously until Magic/Pelinka took over and the young guys looked like they could turn into something.

They are interested in teaming up. That does not mean that they will. And, regardless, Butler and Irving are more second tier guys anyway. The big names next summer are Leonard and KD.

Well, if KD and Kawhi had any honor, they will team up in Indiana. But they'll probably just do like everyone else and team up in a big market. - HurricaneDij

apparently a lot of teams are high in dinwiddie. The Cavs actually offered their pick for him before trading it to the Lakers in the Nance Jr., Clarkson deal. He is a very solid defender, a good team guy and has some talent.

Why would they do that? Two ball dominant scoring guards.

Might be a 43 win team, and then you're just stuck with the #15 pick in the draft for years.

I'd rather see them get a few years of high lottery picks in and see where they're at.
it easy to say that as a hard core fan but after years and years and years of just awful losing i am sure management is ready for a change. They moved into that great new arena and have known nothing but just ridiculous losing. If they can make a splash they will- but it will be highly depenedent on if they can talk multiple guys into coming- since its hard for me to believe any one true top level guy that will get offers from multiple teams will go tehre.

Sure. He is on a rookie deal and he is a good player. Those types are always valuable. I am sure teams would want Allen, RHJ and LeVert too.

However, the fact that the Cavs offered their pick in the late 20s kind of proves my point. If he were viewed as a potential future star, the Cavs would have had to offer the Nets pick to even get the conversation started.

I don't want Kawhi. KD's talent level at least is worth mortgaging the future to bring on any potential baggage. After what we've been through with George, I'm avoiding Kawhi like the plague.

lol

Honestly, I don't really blame you. That Uncle of his seems like a problem and Kawhi doesn't seem to be reeling him in any.

I'd still like to see him on the Lakers. But it won't break my heart if he decides to stay in Toronto. The Lakers already have Lavar to deal with. I don't even want to think about Kawhi's uncle in the mix.

Unless they show they are getting the basketball right, I'll be surprised if they land anyone of note this coming off-season.

They already have.

When you consider the unfavorable positions they've been drafting at over the years and the constraints the previous regime had put them under, they've spawned some decent young talent - RHJ, Jarrett Allen, Spencer Dinwiddie, Caris Lavert, and Joe Harris. If they could somehow win 35 games like the Lakers did last year, it would be icing on the cake for them.

The only question would be if they want to trade for Butler a year before he's scheduled to hit free agency. If so - Russell, Lavert, and DeMarre Carroll's expiring contract would be a very good package to offer...

They're getting there and it seems they finally have a legit FO. But they still have a little work to do on the actual basketball.

Unless they exceed expectations by a good margin, they are probably looking at adding a solid vet or 2 in 2019, then looking at a big fish or 2 in 2020.

Pretty much this. Unless someone like KD pulls a Lebron and decides that the lure of the Broadway light(well the bright lights of Atlantic Avenue anyway) is too great and he wants to finish his career in a big market, I don't see the Nets being a serious player for the big name FAs.

KD is already in a big market. Or are you one of those who thinks only NY and LA count?

New York and LA are in their own category when it comes to market size and the influence of their markets.
