As this, the summer of Tavares, draws to a close we should remember the Leafs have the best motherfucking goalscorer in the world right now, too.

Auston Matthews is the best even-strength goalscorer in the league. Frankly, it’s not close. In a market that has overhyped its share of players, we can say without exaggeration that in this attribute, he is without peer.

The raw numbers pop out. In his rookie year, he scored 32 even strength goals, leading the league. Sidney Crosby, Jeff Skinner, and Vladimir Tarasenko tied for second with 30. Last season, Matthews scored 29 even strength goals in 62 games. Connor McDavid led the league with 35. It’s safe to say that with a full bill of health, Matthews would likely have challenged for the title again.

If you’re going to be the best at some hockey related skill, goal scoring is probably the best one to choose. Accordingly, Matthews led the league in 5v5 primary points per 60, and was 3rd in 5v5 points per 60, behind only Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon.

Watched the highlights from the rookie game last night vs. Ottawa.

Liljegren looks like he spent the summer working to get a call up this year. It would be so amazing if he were this year's Dermott. Could legit be a 2D by the time the playoffs roll around.

Sandin looked good, and so did Bracco. Hopefully he can dominate on the Marlies and become some good trade bait.

Flip side, Nielsen might be cooked. I'm alright with that, considering the Leafs did get Dermott earlier in the same draft but it is indicative of just how weak later-round drafting was under the Hunter/Lou regime - beyond Dermott (who was an early 2nd rounder), Grundstrom is really the only player taken after the first round from 2015-17 that looks capable of being a full time NHLer. For a period where the team was collecting draft picks (and trading them away stupidly - see Brian Boyle and Tomas Plekanec), that's a disappointing haul.

This needed its own post because it does a good job of showing just why these people don't deserve their jobs.

I honestly think he still asks Dave Nonis what he thinks guys will get and then reports that as "insider" info.

According to some people around here, him saying this means he probably didn't deserve his new contract
