Redskins assigned the exclusive-rights franchise tag to QB Kirk Cousins.

The exclusive tag guarantees Cousins a 20-percent raise on his 2016 salary of $19.953 million and prohibits teams from negotiating with him. The Redskins could still theoretically trade Cousins, but negotiations would have to go through Washington's front office and not Cousins' agents, making a trade unlikely. Cousins has flourished in Jay Gruden's offense, improving immensely as a decision maker and precision passer. He has completed at least 67 percent of his passes in consecutive years, posting a 54:23 TD-to-INT ratio during that span. Cousins turns 29 in August. It remains unclear whether the Redskins have interest in signing Cousins to a long-term deal.

Yes the difference between the exclusive and non-exclusive is who does the trading. With the exclusive tag the team can negotiate a trade, with the non-exclusive tag Kirk and his reps would have been able to do it. Kirk can ONLY negotiate with Washington under this tag.

I hope so but that would mean for this offseason only. Hopefully they ink an extension at some pt, but I don't see this being soon.

According to the Washington Post's Mark Maske, a trade sending Redskins franchise player Kirk Cousins to San Francisco "remains in play" despite Cousins' exclusive-rights tag.

While the exclusive tag prevents teams from approaching Cousins and his agents personally, teams can still approach the Redskins' front office about Cousins' trade availability. It would be surprising if the quarterback-desperate, Kyle Shanahan-coached 49ers did not do so. Washington's asking price should still be enormous, likely involving the Niners' No. 2 overall pick. San Francisco is presently armed with ten picks, including seven in the first five rounds.

Because what you refuse to accept is, if a team Kirk doesnt want to go to is offering Washington the highest amount, he can simply refuse to sign with them. The Brown could offer their entire draft to Washington, if Kirk says Im not going to the Browns.. no deal.

I understand that. Let me ask you this. When a team say the Browns offer trade compensation to Wash. is a long term offer attached to that trade compensation for KC? So the Redskins will know the offer and trade right then and there. If they like then get KC involved and he accepts it or vetoes it.

Washington would come to Kirk and say the Browns called, we have worked out a trade provided you can work out a contract. It would then be up to Kirk and his agent to say ok we will talk to the Browns.. or pound sand.

I see. So the redskins have to give the go ahead for Kirks agent to talk to the interested teams on a long term deal. So the trade proposals are already in place. So it now turns to the money factor. Which team who offered wash. a trade will pay the most.

If you could go to a good environment for $30 an hour, but the guy down the street was willing to pay you $35 and hour but you would have to get kicked in the nuts every morning... is the $5 an hour really worth the extra pain to you??

Just because Washington made a habit of signing guys who came here for no other reason than the money does not mean that every player will go into the worst possible situation for a few extra Million.

If it were that easy, The Browns would never have a problem attracting Free Agents, because they generally have plenty of cap space. Cousins is still young for a QB. And if he plays this right he has another 8-10 years to play. Why risk another possible $90M via the third contract, to make an extra $15M going to someplace liable to end your career?
