I went with Haniger. Not sure why, but I think he may be the big surprise for the year.

Tough question! There are 3-4 guys that I am very intrigued by and could make or break the season as far as playoffs are concerned. My mind separates position players from pitchers.

I voted Vogelbach, mainly because I think there is a lot riding on him to succeed at the major league level and if he is successful I think his impact on the team would be enormous. Plus his ability at the major league level is largely unknown.

Dyson would be another one, mainly because I love watching fast guys play the OF and run the bases. Even though we kinda have an idea of what he brings to the table.

Segura because he is one of the big trades. But again we have an idea of what he brings to the table at the major league level.

Haniger is a guy that is intriguing because I am very impressed with what he did in the minors. He can play all the OF spots and his bat, if it translates to the majors, could be huge for us.

For pitchers I gotta go with Smyly. I think Dipoto is correct in believing his game plays well at Safeco and the defense that Dipoto has built around him.

I could throw Gamel in with the position guys as well but I wasn't impressed too much with his limited time last season. He is another guy that if he finds success could impact the team drastically.

I agree he could become a real diamond for us. I am not convinced he will get too much playing time. I don't want to see with him what they did with guys like Romero, where he rides the pine until we get a lefty on the mound. They love playing those lefty/righty, righty/lefty matchups, almost too much at times.

Dipoto says he has first chance at RF and has penciled him in there...of course he said how much he liked Gamel and how he was the new LF to start the season and then went out and got Dyson (which I am glad he did).

i guess we will see what actually happens. I hope he tears it up in spring and forces them to play him.

Call me silly, but I'm still most excited about O'Neill in spring training to see if he could finally be the first home grown all star prospect in ages..no offense Seager.

Not silly at all!!! I am very excited to see O'Neill this season. I will be honest though, he is not the type of player I typically like because he does get K'd a lot. Flip side of that is he is still able to draw a walk which is good because it shows hes at least swings at strikes. I actually think he could project at the majors like a Jay Buhner with more athleticism.

Since I am in the thread, I am also excited to see Max Povse and Robert Whalen. New additions that will probably start in the minors but still think they could become nice assets down the road.

He may k more than any of us would like, but he is one prospect who has the potential to be an all star and the Mariners need to have a home grown all star. I love Seager and all but the Mariners need a bonefide home grown all star not just a fringe star.

yeah i agree, I am a huge believer in home grown talent being the pathway to success and the Mariners have sucked at it for a long long time. And on the topic of O'Neill, I am not so sure he would be an all star at this point. Just being realistic and looking at what his strengths and weaknesses are he has holes in his game that I don't think are fixable based on his ability. He could however be a guy that has a very solid career and have an all star quality season here and there but I don't think he will be a perennial all star given his abilities, but absolutely could be a reason the Mariners succeed down the road.

I like what JD is doing with the younger talent. I think we should start seeing improvements with homegrown guys actually being successful in the next few seasons.

We've had plenty off home grown all star prospects......that turned into all stars for other teams

I'm sure he does have holes, every prospect does. I'm just looking forward to seeing him make his way up. At least according to his stat lines, he has succeeded at every level thus far and it looks like the Mariners are doing it the correct way him as opposed to all the other guys they have had like Choo, Balentien, Jones, Saunders..I'm sure there is a whole list of others but he is one guy I'm excited to see.

I like Segura's potential to be easily the best shortstop the team has had in more than 15 years if he plays the way he's capable of playing. Having him and Dyson in the top 2 spots in the lineup also gives the M's the best top half of the lineup that they've had in a long time. There's a lot to like with a lineup that looks something like this:

Dyson/Segura
Segura/Dyson
Cano
Cruz
Seager
Vogelbach
Zunino
Haniger
Martin

The 6-7-8 spots are my assumptions based on offseason chatter and could look totally different, I think it's safe to say that the top 5 and the #9 spot are nailed down pretty securely. I'd really like to see Zunino have a breakout year offensively. I'm getting tired of having embarrassingly bad offensive seasons out of the catcher spot. Last year's combo of Iannetta and Zunino was much better than the output of all the combos we used in the previous 2 or 3 years at that position, but it still wasn't great. Zunino came out of college being known for his hitting. I'd like to see that potential become consistent production at the big league level.

Haniger or Vogelbach. I'm a new Cubs fan by move (3 seasons ago so TECHNICALLY watched them when they sucked although no mystery their farm was absolutely INSANE when I started watching - still, I remember $7 bleacher seats... those were the days because good luck getting them for that now). Still root for Seattle over Cubs though when they do play and would be sporting Ms attire if they ever saw each other in a WS.

I voted Haniger just because I'm rooting for him as he spent quite a bit of time in the minors and tore it up there.

Vogelbach would be the guy that'd probably most help the team. We need a solid 1st baseman with power and Lind was a disappointment with his short Ms stint. Couldn't even crack .300 OBP.

Segura for me. That trade needs to work out for the M's. If Marte and Walker become superstars fine, just as long as Segura does what he's supposed to here.

I'm in that same camp. I think Walker has a chance to become a star but I don't think Marte will ever become a bonefide star so we need Segura to be all star caliber not necessarily an all star but at least in the running for the Mariners IMO.
