There is a Kirby puckett thread, and it made me think of players that MAY be HOFers(not the obvious ones)...

Beltran was the first who came into mind...

And I say yes for him...

He has the longevity, he has the prime, He has the defense, he even has elite level speed...

Really don't see a reason why he wont make the HOF, He just never really SCREAMED amazing to me...

As a homer, I don't really see what the big deal is with Beltran making it in.

Seems open and shut to me, personally.

It's been said on here by others, but he had a pretty underrated career because he was a jack of all trades, master of none type player.

If he were a .315 career hitter instead of .280 and as a tradeoff had much less power, he'd probably be regarded by many as being better than he currently is (although in reality he may not be).

I wouldn't be upset if he made it, but I do not think he will.

Going with a yes but not a first ballot if I was voting.

400 HR's for a guy who spent most of his time in CF.

Excellent defender early in his career.

Excellent playoff statistics.

I don't delve in deeply on HOF nitpicking, but I get a vibe that Beltran is more of a "Hall of Very Good" type player.

I am generally against a player making it solely because of his position... But he is clearly the best Center fielder offensively(career wise) that we have seen since Ken Griffey JR...

I don't really see him getting in.

Which is fine with me.

I am a guy who likes to look at buckets rather than the entire collection. He had a few seasons at 150 OPS+, which is very good. But he never finished higher than 4th in MVP, and was never considered THE GUY in the game (or even one of the top handfull of players).

Hall of Very Good.

Borderline Hall of Fame AT BEST.

I voted no. Not at any point in his career would I have considered him the best at his position.

Among position players from '98 to '16 with 5000 PA, Beltran is 6th in WAR, 13th in home runs, and 5th in BsR. He's also in the top 60 in OPS, wOBA, and wRC+. I would really like to see him get in. He's been one of my favorite non-Phillies to watch.

Beltran has quite a few arbitrary milestone achievements that'll help with more traditional voters, imo. 1500 runs, 1500 RBI, 300+ SB, 400 HR's etc.
Tell that to Galarraga (joking- of course the steroids fucked him)

I'd say a good case can be made that he was the best CF from 2006-2008. Probably also top 3 from 2001-2004.

Doesn't help when some of your best seasons come on a terrible Royals team.
I'd say a good case can be made that he was the best CF from 2006-2008. Probably also top 3 from 2001-2004.

Fangraphs rates Sizemore just ahead of him (21.6 to 20.2) from 06-08, but Sizemore also had about 300 more PA. Beltran had more WAR per 500 PA though. The gap between them and everyone else is pretty big (Grandy's 3rd at 16.0). Beltran's 133 wRC+ was the highest among center fielders over that span as well. Beltran's 20.2 WAR rates 4th among all players over that span though, behind only Pujols/Utley/Sizemore. David Wright is 5th at 20.1.

As for 01-04, Beltran had 24.1 WAR, 2nd among CF behind only Edmonds (27.5). Edmonds' offensive numbers blow Beltran away (157 wRC+ to 125 wRC+ (still top 3 behind Edmonds and Bernie Williams). Beltran ranks 8th among all players in WAR over that span. Bonds just blows everyone out of the water with 47.3, A-Rod is 2nd at 33.6.

I say yes, but it'll probably take the Veterans Committee to get him in.
