Watched the reveal of the new model 3. Looks interesting. Wouldn't think of reserving one until we see them on the road for a bit, but pretty impressive. Minimum of 215 mile range, 6 second 0-60 for the most basic model. Autopilot feature on all models and looks like a nice quality car. Says the base model will be $35k. Lots of room with trunks under the hood and in the back, and looks roomy inside.

Just looking at that in my state...

$7500 federal tax credit (currently only for vehicles before they sell 200k units though)
Colorado Tax Credit (would max at $6000 as long as has more than a 25kwh battery which it surely will)

Potential to be $21,500 for a base model, would basically be the cost of a mid-hight but not top-level Corolla, Fiesta or Sonic. Sounds like it would be an option as a 2nd vehicle or if you don't take road trips. Plus doubling the number of his superchargers... I'll definitely wait to see how they actually turn out, but thought it was interesting to say the least.

I still like gas guzzlers.

I was washing my car last weekend waiting for a friend to arrive. He was taking a cab.

I suddenly heard a door close and turned around and the taxi was in my driveway. A Prius. No noise at all till the door slammed.

I think we could potentially have more issues getting power charging stations plus finding the electrical supply? Or do we start burning more coal to generate the electricity? We sure aren't there on solar yet.

Fair amount of low RPM torque...shoots off the line pretty quickly I understand.

My neighbor has a Leaf or whatever the Nissan electric car is...I haven't driven it, but he says 0-40 is not bad and passing acceleration 60-80 for an EV...the Telsa 3 is supposed to be in the 6 sec area...0-60.

I might have an interest in a Hybrid, but for now have none in an electric car.

Well even in the area's with the highest feed by coal power, pollution wise, an EV is still better than anything outside of a hybrid, and in 85% of the US, it's better even than a hybrid. Obviously coal is still big but that is the one energy source in the US to fall in the past 5 years.

But you are right, it would push for a more US reliant energy source rather than relying on OPEC for our energy needs. And it would be a change, nothing like the addition of home air conditioners proliferating America over the past 30 years, but it would draw some power.

A properly maintained modern gas guzzler doesn't do that much damage. I've read that in some cities the exhaust is actually cleaner than the air heading in through the air box.

I heard something like that years and years ago, but thought it was quickly debunked and went away. I thought BMW said something like that but it was about a hydrogen car. But I'd want to see a scientific study saying that because I don't think if you hooked up a hose to a properly maintained car and ran it into your cabin that you would be breathing better air. I would agree that properly maintaining your car can be a HUGE reducer of the pollution it puts out though.

And my cars are a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, and a Chevy Camaro SS, my Prius is simply because I commute 110 miles a day and I don't want to be putting high miles on those ones and wanted a fuel efficient low trouble high miler. I am not an environmentalist by any means of the term, if you looked under my Camaro that would be obvious lol. But I do think reducing our need for fossil fuels/coal is a fine choice. I don't think they will last forever, I don't think they improve our air quality, and I don't care for the costs and support of OPEC nations (fought two wars myself over there, we wouldn't be caring what goes on if that area was not important to our own energy interests, not saying the war was "over oil", but the area is more important globally because it does produce that).

I won't be buying a Model3 out of the gate. Not sure on the dependability of them, and I'd want to see them on the road for a while, and while it would be perfect for my commute, and some minor road trips, it isn't something I'd want to take on a trip across the country for obvious reasons. But I have to say I am impressed with where EV's have gone in the past 5 years. Seriously before that they were city golf carts with no room, power, range, or fun factor for the most part. If you told me 10 years ago we'd have a 750+ horse electric car with a range of nearly 300 miles, that actually looks nice and has room I would have laughed. It is still in it's infancy, but you think of where gas combustion engines were just 5 years after hitting mainstream vs. where they are today, or even 20 years later, that obviously has a good chance of really becoming MUCH better. I wouldn't be surprised if before 2020 we are seeing EV's with 600+ mile ranges. There that really is a game changer. And just like we see in about any new industry, as they work to mass produce and increase efficiencies prices will fall. So multiple reasons I will wait.

I have 3 vehicles as well. Not too long ago I had 6 but have since dumped my 3 older Fords... A 2002 Maxima my wife drives daily, a 2005 S55 AMG beast we drive when it's sunny and because I drive 110 miles a day to work a recently acquired 2001 Audi A4 1.8 T.

Really only one gas guzzler and it's a whopper.

But I love them all.

Nice, that Merc probably gets about the same mileage as my jeep and weighs as much too. lol. I do like the look of those cars, they still look new and clean.

I am looking for something fun, as I don't get to use the Camaro as much as I would like, and it's nearly paid off, but hard to see that investment on something that sits there so often (live in Colorado, summer only tires). Maybe a classic project, but hard to find anything there where the prices haven't blown up. Actually lately I've been checking out older Miata's, much less $ invested in one and a blast to drive, plus we have a nice little road course track nearby that when I had my Speed3 I would take out there all the time, go once in a while with the Camaro, but just don't feel as comfortable in it with the sight lines.

That is one thing I really do like that Tesla has done. Sure the S and X are higher cost vehicles, but it's the first EV I wouldn't mind being seen in. I see more and more of the Model S's around and they just look good on the road. Model 3 I will see, much better than any other EV, but I just want to paint that solid air dam black and put a few chrome lines across it lol.

They are not unappealing to the eye for sure.

Keep this in mind, I do not own a smart phone.

I do not do Netflix or similar. I have cable.

So it will take me a while.

And it could be as fast as the Camaro.... It's damn quick with 500 HP.

lol... Ok. I'm ok with that.

But crazy to think 10 years ago this was probably your best bet for an EV

And now we have this

Just will be neat to see where this goes.

Tesla will struggle and I think the stock has one big crash left in it. Then, the moderately priced Tesla that changes everything because it will out haul any truck. Electric is perfect for work vehicles and this will look a lot more like a work truck when it comes in '19.

The Model 3's on the road look nice. Seems like my spot in the list is sometime in at the beginning of next year...

Tesla S are everywhere down here. Now I'm seeing a few Xs around (by far the best IMO) and I've seen some 3s this week.
It makes sense for snowbirds to buy them down here. They probably sit for 6 months without as many problems as a gas engine and they certainly haven't been depreciating too rapidly.

I saw 2 new charging stations on Sanibel, too. It's pretty smart to put a charging station in front of one's little business because it causes people of some means to come kill 20+ minutes in your store or restaurant.

Unless all the electricity comes from solar, we will never be able to keep up cleanly if the whole world goes electric.

Coal will be burned. Rivers will be damned. Neither are great.

Generating electricity causes energy losses every step of the way as well. Not efficient.

Almost better off burning gas in today's clean burning cars.
