NFL Players Association - 2016 NFL Clubs’ Unused Salary Cap Carryover Amounts Announced

The NFLPA announced carry-over cap space money today and the Redskins will be carrying over $5.8M in cap space from the 2015 season. Coupled with the $2M in added cap room provided by the sudden "finding" of $120M in "forgotten" ticket sales, the Redskins will, if I've understood all this properly, have around $8M more cap space to spend in 2016.

I've heard that we had about $12M before all this occurred. So, adding all these numbers up, we've got about $20M now. With "Bob" getting released, that will spike it to around $36M. However, if Kirk is tagged, that will be pushed all the way down to $16M.

That's why it's so important to get a long-term deal from Kirk. By doing that and keeping some room under the cap, we can legitimately look at Tashaun Gipson, Malik Jackson or Damon Harrison and can re-sign our own people like Junior Galette. Still, even if Kirk is tagged, there are some other moves that can be made to create more cap room to sign one or two "big name" free agents.

If you add the cuts of Roberts, hatcher, and Goldsten, that should be about 16M right there.

I'm not sure if Hatcher or Roberts are getting released. Hatcher appears to be leaning towards returning. Roberts, despite all of his drops, still represents good vet depth (and spot special teams play). We can't cut Goldson if we don't have a replacement for him. I'd be all for cutting him and signing someone like Tashaun Gipson, however. Gipson would be younger, better and cheaper (than the current $8M cap tag that Goldson is carrying).

How is Roberts staying on this team we could save 4 mil if we cut him. Hatchet is iffy but Goldten can be cut and be brought back at a way cheaper price. Plus I forgot to add Perry Riley. He is another 4 mil savings if we cut him. that's 20mil if all those guys that I mentioned are released. Now add the 12M you stated plus the 16m from RG3. that is 48 million under the cap all said and done. Even if we franchise KC we still have 28 mil to play with.

If KC somehow signs a long term deal then that would mean we would have more money to spend or extend to guys like Reed.

A few weeks ago, I would have agreed with you on most of what you said. But in listening to some podcasts by some respected beat reporters, my opinion on them have changed.

If Garcon or D-Jax go down, who's your number two WR? Crowder won't be it since he's a more natural fit for the slot. And Ryan Grant doesn't seem to be a good enough replacement either. If we can't sign a better FS to replace Goldson, we may just have to keep him. That may involve a restructure but one thing the brass really like about Goldson is his lockerroom and leadership skills. Some say this may be overrated, but, according to some people like ESPN's Redskins beat reports John Keim, the Redskins credit vets like Goldson for keeping the team together and making that late-season playoff push in 2015. Of course, that leadership can only go so far where you've got better talent that can fill Goldson's spot. But that's apparently a big consideration in the Redskins' calculus.

I agree on Riley and Hatcher. Get rid of them and see what we can do in terms of FA and/or the draft.

Ross can step in at WR. He can blow the top off of a defense just like Jax can. WR should not be addressed this year. Goldson can be cut and resigned. Their would be no market for him. Plus he would want to come back here. So we can get him back at a way cheaper price. Plus we have Hall, Nacho, Johnson, the V tech kid, and probably a rookie. Goldson would not be a huge loss in my mind.

Ross can't do that. He's got the speed, but doesn't have the first, blow-by step that D-Jax has nor does he have the ability to track the ball like an outfielder like D-Jax can. Right now, there's no comparison between Ross and D-Jax, and that's the reason why D-Jax will stay for his current cap number (or get it re-worked by converting his non-guaranteed base to a signing bonus).

As for Goldson, I'd normally agree with you. But apparently the Redskins think his leadership abilities add something more to the equation. Keim did say that if they thought that someone could do the job that much better at a cheaper price, leadership can only take you so far. So, maybe Goldson does get cut.

Ross is a more than capable backup. They don't need to address WR this year.

They absolutely need to address WR this year. First, next year we may be without garçon and Jackson. Second, an injury to either one of those guys this year leaves us without a starting caliber WR. Roberts is gone. Ross is a project that doesn't blow the top off defenses yet as they know that going deep is his only threat so the play him accordingly.

We need a young, big WR that can be groomed this year to take the place of one starter next year.

Could be wrong, but I think the $12 million that places like OTC and spotrac were reporting included the carry over number already.

But If Im wrong on this, then I will gladly be wrong in this instance. :D

c, de, nt, cb, and S are much more pressing needs than WR. Ross does not get enough credit. The only reason why Grant plays is b/c Gruden loves him. Wr can wait until next offseason and draft. jy19 if your theory was true than Doctson and Thomas would be the draft picks at #21 b/c both guys will be there. If one of these Wr's are picked over a stud DL, CB, or Kelly I am going to be pissed. The only offensive players that should be picked at #21 is Elliot and Kelly. That's it.

A) Lets hope the Skins come up with a MUCH better reason to sign a Cuz to a 90 mill - 100 mill long-term deal then. So they can have more money to sign FAs for the upcoming season.

B) Where did Rashard Ross show all this capable back up ability? Surely not in the 8 catches for 184 yars and 1 TD that he caught last year. Speaking of last year. That would've been a good time to see what skils Ross had and which skills he needed to improve.

I to believe Roberts should be cut. He's shown next to nothing as a wide out in his 2 seasons with the Skins. Saw Gruden yesterday on NFLN and he was asked if both Djax and Garcon would be with the team next year. He looked shocked like "WTF! Why wouldn't they be?" and proceeded to say something along these lines of. He's looking forward to a healthy Djax to start the season and you can't teach speed. About Garcon he said he has one of the biggest hearts or is one of the toughest WRs you'll ever know. Then praised both Crowder and Ryan Grant adding that Grant was an exceptional route runner and he's gonna be pushing for a starting slot next season. He also said Reed pretty much is the shit and is hopeful his injury issues are a thing of the past

It could've all been coach-speak, but he sounded and looked really excited when talking about the wide outs and Reed.

It's a pretty damn good receiving corps and this may be the last year the are all together. Let's hope they can make magic happen this last year. Let's also hope we add to the corps this year a young, big ball hawking WR that we can season for a year.

Dean, this player doesn't need to be a 1st or even 2nd round pick. Just watch your board and wait till a wr you are interested in slips past where you think he should be. Grab him.

Draft will depend on what happens in free agency and the Jets Damon Harrison may be available now that they will be placing the franchise tag on Wilkerson

disagree we need to be in BPA mode and if Scott says lets say for instance Treadwell falls to us and he thinks he is the best player at 21 you pick him

Treadwell is a different story especially if he runs well at his pro day. Most likely he wont be there at #21.

Yeah, I'd like the routes PG, Reed, and JC, run to go a little deeper. And maybe they will this year with a now fully confident Cousins pulling the trigger and everyone having 1 to 2 full seasons of Gruden's system under their belt. But yeah, that could be a very good receiving unit indeed with Reed and possibly Djax being studs if they can stay injury-free for the entire year.

Injury is my concern. After our starters, we get pretty thin. Ross has proven nothing as you pointed out. Also not sold on Grant. He seems slow and hasn't ever really done much on offense. He is an adequate STs player and will only get better. Gruden does appear high on him so maybe there is more there than we've had a chance to see. Or maybe not. If/when Reed gets injured, we don't have anyone that can come close to his production so that will hurt.
