It's been done before. But Trey has flashed some real talent. Would really hate it to pan out for the Boys. :tsk:

An eye opening post over at HH. This poster takes some interesting positions but the eye-test at this point in the season cry for more Preston.

I was a huge advocate for Trent Murphy starting this season. I expected him to make a big leap. At least one that was tangible. But he is playing so badly right now even the stats paint an ugly picture and gameplay an even uglier one.
Trent Murphy Thru 7 games
4 solo tackles and 12 assisted (16 total)
1 sack 1 FF

The top 5 OLB leaders in tackles are as follows:
Telvin Smith 53 solo 15 assisted (68) 0.5 sacks
Vincent Rey 40 solo 25 assisted (65) 0 sacks
Sean Lee 36 solo 25 assisted (61) 1 sack
Thomas Davis 42 solo 17 assisted (59) 2 sacks
Lavonte David 30 solo 28 assisted (58) 1 sack

Did I expect Trent to be top 5? Of course not but here is some of his company:
Mike Neal 11 solo 5 assisted (16) 2 sacks
Barkevious Mingo 9 solo 7 assisted (16) 0 sacks
Rolando McClain 11 solo 5 assisted (16) 1 sack
Travis Lewis 13 solo 3 assisted (16) 1 sack
Manny Lawson 11 solo 5 assisted (16) 0 sacks

But tackles aren’t everything lets take a look at the top 5 olbs in sacks:
Justin Houston 21 solo 5 assisted 5.5 sacks
Whitney Mercilus 17 solo 10 assisted (27) 5.5 sacks
Julius Peppers 11 solo 6 assisted (17) 5.5 sacks
DeMarcus Ware 13 solo 6 assisted (19) 5.5 sacks
Aaron Lynch 21 solo 2 assisted (23) 5 sacks

Finally lets look at olb starters with low sack numbers but production elsewhere:
Josh Bynes 32 solo 19 assisted (51) 0 sacks
Justin Durant 20 solo 10 assisted (40) 0 sacks
Devon Kennard 24 solo 12 assisted (36) 0 sacks
Jelani Jenkins 32 solo 13 assisted (45) 0 sacks

I guess I just went through all of that to say where the hell is Trent Murphy? And who is he? What good does it do to toss water heaters if you can’t toss a LT every once in awhile (figurative)?

When he was draft he was heralded as a pass rusher. And pass rushers "don’t grow on trees" – Jay Gruden
Murphy did tie the NCAA leader in sacks with 15 but that ability to get home has all but gone it seems. In the pros we quickly stopped talking about him as a rusher and said his strength was run stopping but the numbers don’t support that either. To remain a starter in this league you can’t suck at stopping the run (tackles) and pass rushing (sacks). You have to be good at one or the other, if you are good at both you are elite.

In 2014 an OLB was taken in the 5th round from a small school and is putting up some great numbers on a bad team: Aaron Lynch. Couda Wouda Shouda.

But hey we have another OLB on our team, one I (shameless I know) did a profile for back in the summer. His name is Preston Smith, his stats are:

11 solo 3 assisted (14) 2 sacks 3 FF 1 FR

I think its clear who should start week 8.

Jay Gruden is a professional NFL Head Coach
Kirk Cousins is a professional NFL QB

Undebatable facts.

Joey Bosa 2016!

I find nothing appealing about a BS artist......bet that's not how he really feels!
What's BS about it? True statement. No one is required to reveal anything special. No advantage to revealing much of anything in pressers like these. Kirk is well aware of that and is not providing any bulletin board material.

He might as well had said...........I'm going to appoint a blue ribbon commission to figure out exactly what the mindset should be going into the N.E. game. Bullshit all the same.

And BB spouting rainbows about Kirk isn't? Could care less if there is real speak in pressers. Savvy fans can read between the lines.

........And great teams turn what appears to be an innocuous statement into slap in the face material. Pretty sure N.E. will see that as confusing them with the scrub teams DC has already played. Sort of the way MJ did it when that BS was tried on him and the Bulls. The other team reads between the lines too!

Some illuminating quotes from teammates on Preston

Excerpt

Before Barry feels comfortable turning Smith loose, the coordinator needs to see greater consistency and awareness. It sounds as if the message has started to sink in.

“Now it’s time for me to step up, don’t play like a rookie, and be a guy the team can count on,” Smith says. “I’m watching film a lot longer, paying attention to detail, being critical on myself. If I make a good play, I need to break down what it took to make a good play so I can have even more of those, and obviously correct things when I make a bad play.”

Smith hasn’t mastered the lesson yet, but he has begun to learn how much differently college and NFL players approach their preparation.
